There are many technically difficult issues in searching multimedia data such as image, video and audio because they are massive and more complex than simple text-based data. As a method of searching multimedia data, a similarity retrieval has been studied to retrieve automatically basic features of multimedia data and to make a search among data with retrieved features because exact match is not adaptable to a matrix of features of multimedia. In this paper, data clustering and its indexing are proposed as a speedy similarity-retrieval method of multimedia data. This approach clusters similar images on adjacent disk cylinders and then builds Indexes to access the clusters. To minimize the search cost, the hashing is adapted to index cluster. In addition, to reduce I/O time, the proposed searching takes just one I/O to look up the location of the cluster containing similar object and one sequential file I/O to read in this cluster. The proposed schema solves the problem of multi-dimension by using clustering and its indexing and has higher search efficiency than the content-based image retrieval that uses only clustering or indexing structure.

The propagation of coherent time-harmonic elastic L-and SV-waves is studied in a medium with random distribution of cylindrical inclusions. The purpose of the research is to characterize the dynamic elastic moduli and the attenuation properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials. The cylindes representing the fibers are assumed to be distributed in parallel with each other and the direction of incident waves are normal to the cylinder axes. A multiple scattering formula using the single scattering coefficients in conjunction with the Lax's quasicrystalline approximation is derived from which the dispersion relation for such medium is obtained. In order to formulate the multiple scattering interaction between cylinders, the pair correlation functions are generated by the Monte Carlo simulation technique. From the numerically evaluated complex wavenumbers, the propagation speed of the average wave, the coherent attenuation and the effective elastic moduli are presented as functions of frequency and fiber volume fraction.

This study investigates vibro-acoustic characteristics of a short, thick cylinder containing a slot given a pined-free boundaries. Using the finite element analysis results, structural modes of the asymmetric cylinder (with a slot) are expressed as the linear combinations of modes of the symmetric cylinder made of same material with identical geometry except the slot. Based on synthesized modal vibrations, acoustic modes of the asymmetric cylinder are obtained with two approaches, i.e., Rayleigh integral calculation and modal expansion of the acoustic modes of the symmetric cylinder. Also, acoustic powers, max. sound pressure and directivity pattern are obtained from acoustic modes and verified with the boundary element analyses. Based on these results, the accuracy of proposed approaches in calculating the vibro-acoustic properties of a short, thick, asymmetric cylinder has been confirmed. The procedure can be applied to the similar cylinders with other boundaries or asymmetric properties. Also, attenuation of vibration and/or sound radiation of the cylinder type practical components can be studied using these approaches.
A simple and effective analysis method is presented for gaining a complete transient temperatures on the internal and external surfaces of a 40 mm gun tube subjected to a series of rapid firings. Two series of temperature data for both Hs and As were measured by using two rapid response k-type surface thermocouples near the firing origin and the muzzle. With other available temperature data, patterns of temperature variations of the gun tube as a function of time variable were driven through complete evaluations of the data. It is found that overall temperature gradients which increase exponentially toward saturation temperature, actually consist of a series of linear temperature gradients corresponding to the firing sequences. Under the similar firing sequences, patterns of temperature variations fur both the surface temperatures near the chamber and those near the muzzle were found to have linear temperature gradients with different values and the same response frequencies, i.e. they had peaks and lows in temperatures at the same time. The resultant complete temperature data can be used as the fundamental bases for analysis of thermoelastic properties of the materials such as thermal strain and stress, and f3r the prediction of cannon tube life-time through calculation of wear rate.

Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed using SIMPLER method to study the unsteady viscous flow physics over two-dimensional ellipses. Unsteady viscous flows over various thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 200, 400, and 1,000. This study is focused on the understanding the effects of Reynolds number and elliptic cylinder thickness on the drag and lift forces. The present numerical solutions are compared with available experimental and numerical results and show a good agreement. Through this study, it is observed that the Reynolds number and the cylinder thickness affect not only the frequency of the force oscillations but also the mean values and the amplitudes of the total drag and lift forces significantly.

A parametric study has been accomplished to figure out the effects of the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number on the lift and drag forces exerted on the elliptic cylinder. A two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed using SIMPLER method to analyze the unsteady viscous flow over elliptic cylinder. Thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 400 and 600, and angles of attack of $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$. Through this study, it is observed that the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number affect significantly not only the time-mean values and the amplitudes of the drag and lift forces but also the frequencies of the force oscillations.
In this paper, we propose an image-based method for modeling 3D objects with curved surfaces based on the NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) representation. Starting from a few calibrated images, the user specifies the corresponding curves by means of an interactive user interface. Then, the 3D curves are reconstructed using stereo reconstruction. In order to fit the curves easily using the interactive user interface, NURBS curves and surfaces are employed. The proposed surface modeling techniques include surface building methods such as bilinear surfaces, ruled surfaces, generalized cylinders, and surfaces of revolution. In addition to these methods, we also propose various advanced surface modeling techniques, including skinned surfaces, swept surfaces, and boundary patches. Based on these surface modeling techniques, it is possible to build various types of 3D shape models with textured curved surfaces without much effort. Also, it is possible to reconstruct more realistic surfaces by using proposed view-dependent texture acquisition algorithm. Constructed 3D shape model with curves and curved surfaces can be exported in VRML format, making it possible to be used in different 3D graphics softwares.

Many studies have examined robot control using human bio signals but complicated signal processing and expensive hardware are necessary. This study proposes a method to recognize a human's hand motion using a low-cost EMG sensor and Flex sensor. The method to classify movement of the hand and finger is determined from the change in output voltage measured through MCU. The analog reference voltage is determined to be 3.3V to increase the resolution of movement identification through experiment. The robotic hand is designed to realize the identified movement. The hand has four fingers and a wrist that are controlled using pneumatic cylinders and a DC servo motor, respectively. The results show that the proposed simple method can realize human hand motion in a remote environment using the fabricated robotic hand.
The Strouhal number is an important nondimensional number which is explanatory of aerodynamic instability phenomena. It takes on the different characteristic constant value depending upon the cross-sectional shape of the body being enveloped by the flow. A number of investigations into this subject, especially on the drag test, surface pressure test and hot-wire test, have been carried out under the fixed state of the body in the past. However, almost no investigations concerning the determination of the St on wind-induced vibration of the body have been reported in the past even though the aerodynamic behavior of the body is very important because the construction of wind-sensitive structures is recently on the sharp increase. Based on a series of wind tunnel tests, this paper addresses a new method to determine the Strouhal number of rectangular cylinder in the uniform flow. The central idea of the proposed method is that the Strouhal number can be obtained directly by the aerodynamic behaviors of the body through wind-induced vibration test. The validity of proposed method is evaluated by comparing with the results obtained by previous studies in three B/Ds at attack angle $0^{\circ}$ and a square cylinder with various attack angles. The values and trends of the proposed Strouhal numbers are in good agreements with values of previous studies. And also, the Strouhal numbers of B/D=1.5 and 2.0 with various attack angles are obtained by the proposed method and verified by other method. This proposed method is as good as any other previous methods to obtain the Strouhal number.
With a rapid progress in electronic industry we enjoy various conveniences of life. As many kinds of information equipments are supplied even to most of individuals as to be called an information society, we are exchanging much information with one another surprisingly. Consequently the occupation density of microwave frequency band is highly increased, and electromagnetic environment is getting more seriously bad. It often gives fatal blow to even human life and thus becomes serious social problems. Electromagnetic wave absorbers for anechoic chamber are needed to broaden the effective frequency bandwidth, reduce the thickness, and decrease the weight. There are various absorbers proposed for the above conditions, but they could not decisively solve it the alone requirements. The Electromagnetic wave absorber made by a conventional ferrite tile has, for example, broadened the useful frequency bandwidth by the way of forming air layer(practically use urethane foam, etc.) on the ferrite tile. Therefore, an air layer is formed between a reflection plate and a sintered Ni-Zn ferrite tile of 7 mm in thickness, which has reflectivity less than -20 dB from 30 MHz to 400 MHz in bandwidth. Accordingly, in this paper, a broadened electromagnetic wave absorber are designed, which has the reflection characteristics less than -20 dB from 30 MHz to 6,000 MHz in the bandwidth. Then we achieved the goal by design the inserting square Ferrite Cylinders with the thickness less than 17.5 mm on existing grid type Ferrite absorber. The purpose of this research is on the development of very wide-band electromagnetic absorber for a universal anechoic chamber for measuring radiated electromagnetic wave or immunity of electronic equipments, GTEM-cell, wall material for preventing TV ghost, etc.
