  • Simultaneous 3-D LDV measurements of the in-cylinder flows of three different engine setups were summarized for the quantification of the flow characteristics in each vertical or horizontal plane, and in entire cylinder volume. The ensemble averaged-velocity, tumble and swirl motions, and turbulent kinetic energy during the intake and compression strokes were examined from the measured velocity data (approximately 2,000 points for each engine setup). The better spatial resolution of the 3-D LDV allows measurements of the instantaneous flow structures, yielding more valuable information about the smaller flow structures and the cycle-to-cycle variation of these flow patterns. Tumble and swirl ratios, and turbulent kinetic energy were quantified as planar and volumetric quantities. The measurements and calculation results were animated for the visualization of the flow, and hence ease to analysis.

  • This paper presents an individual cylinder spark advance control strategy based upon the location of peak pressure (LPP) in spark ignition engines using artificial neural networks. The LPP is estimated using a feedforward multi-layer perceptron network (MLPN), which needs only five samples of output voltage from the cylinder pressure sensor. The cyclic variation of LPP restricts the gain of the feedback controller, and results in poor regulation performance during the transient operation of the engine. The transient performance of the spark advance controller is improved by adding a feedforward controller which reflects the abrupt changes of the engine operating conditions such as engine speed and manifold absolute pressure (MAP)...

  • Numerical analysis of the laminar natural convection in an enclosure of the 20KVA oil-immeresed transformer is presented. The core in the transformer is modelled as a rectangular cylinder and calculation is carried out for $Ra=10^3-10^6$. The correlating equation between the inner cylinder mean Nusselt numbers and Rayleigh numbers can be obtained. The conduction and convection regimes for the variation of Rayleigh numbers are well represented in the temperature distributions along the side wall of the inner cylinder. For high Rayleigh numbers, it is found that the recirculating flow in the enclosure above the inner cylinder is divided into two recirculation regions.

  • This paper reports the experimental study of the heat transfer characteristics of the wake region behind a cylinder in cross flow. Local heat transfer coefficient was measured from the stagnation point (θ=0°) to 180°, and the variation of Nu in the axial direction along the cylinder was also studied. The results show that the heft transfer rate at the rear (θ=180°) near the duct wall can increase as much as 58% over the 2 dimensional value at the center of the duct. The heat transfer profiles in the wake region also show distinct effects of the aspect ratio and the heat transfer boundary condition.

  • The present study numerically investigates three-dimensional laminar flow past a rotating circular cylinder placed in a uniform stream. For the purpose of a careful analysis of the modification of flow by the effect of the rotation on the flow, numerical simulations are performed at a various range of rotational coefficients ($0{\leq}{\alpha}{\leq}2.5$) at one Reynolds number of 300. As ${\alpha}$ increases, flow becomes stabilized and finally a steady state beyond the critical rotational coefficient. The 3D (three dimensional) wake mode of the stationary cylinder defined at this Reynolds number has been disorganized according to ${\alpha}$, which were observed by the visualization of 3D vortical structures. The variation of the Strouhal number is very weak when the wake pattern is changed according to the rotational coefficient. As ${\alpha}$ increases, the lift increases, whereas the drag decreases.

  • Thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder in a uniform laminar air flow was numerically investigated using a control volume method based on the generalized non-orthogonal coordinate system. Variation of air properties due to the change of temperature was taken into account. Effects of variable property on the distribution of heat transfer and deposition rates of particle were discussed. A new correlation of thermophoretic particle deposition on a circular cylinder was proposed in the present study.

  • In this study, a computer analysis has been developed for predicting the pipe pressure of the intake and exhaust manifold in a single cylinder engine. To get the boundary conditions for a numerical analysis, one dimensional and unsteady gas dynamic calculation is performed by using the MOC(Method Of Characteristic). The main numerical parameters are the variation of the exhaust pipe diameters to calculate the pulsating flow when the intake and exhaust valves are working. As the results of numerical analysis, the shapes and distributions of the exhaust pipe pressures were influenced strongly on the cylinder pressure. As the exhaust pipe diameter is decreased, the amplitude of exhaust pressure is large and the cylinder pressure was showed low in the region of intake valve opening time.

  • The solenoid actuated hydrogen injector and the capacitive peak-hold type driving circuit were designed and made, and the hydrogen supply system for in-cylinder injection was constructed with these. The performance of the injector was investigated through measuring the pintle lift profiles and the injection quantities, and the performance of the hydrogen supply system was confirmed through the experiments at the single cylinder engine. The injection quantity increased linearly as the duration of driving signal increased. At the single cylinder engine, the hydrogen injector was operated stably. The hydrogen flow rate of the injector with the peak-hold type driving circuit could be controlled precisely at high engine speed or low load condition only with the variation of signal duration.

  • In this paper, free surface flows around an advancing two-dimensional rectangular cylinder piercing the free surface are studied using numerical and experimental methods. Especially, wave breaking phenomenon around the cylinder is treated in detail. A series of numerical simulations and experiments were performed for the purpose of comparison. For the numerical simulations, a finite difference method was adopted with a rectangular grid system, and the variation of the free surface was computed by the marker density method. The computational results are compared with the experiments. It is confirmed that the present numerical method is useful for the numerical simulation of nonlinear free surface waves around a piercing body.

  • Elasto-plastic finite element analysis was performed for a burnishing process for the inner surface of a cylinder by mandrel. Three different configurations in roughness of the inner surface, two different thicknesses of the cylinder wall, and five different diameters of the mandrel were selected for the present investigation. Although the surface roughness was improved with the increase of the mandrel diameter, defects of folding occurred as the mandrel diameter exceeded certain limits. Improvements in the surface roughness, distributions of effective strain, effective stress and residual circumferential stress, and the variation of mandrel force were also investigated.
