  • The effects of intake port eccentricity and a partition between the two intake ports on the incylinder swirl characteristics in a 4 valve diesel engine having the two intake ports, one is a helical intake port and the other is a tangential intake port, were investigated by using the impulse swirl meter(ISM) in a steady flow test rig. Mean flow coefficient ( $C_{f(mean)}$, swirl ratio ( $R_{s}$) and the mass flowrate through the two intake ports with and without intake port partition were measured. The results showed that the characteristics of in-cylinder swirl ratio formed by a 4-valve cylinder head were largely affected by valve eccentricity ratio ( $N_{y}$) and the existence of an intake port partition between the two intake ports. Mean flow coefficient ( $C_{f(mean)}$) increases and swirl ratio ( $R_{s}$) decreases in case of being the partition between the two intake ports. And also the mass flowrate through the tangential intake port is 19.0% and 7.7% more than that of the helical intake port in case of the two intake ports with and without partition respectively.ively.

  • This study was performed to calculate the swirl ratio of a diesel engine intake port by a 1D computer simulation under actual engine operating conditions. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to the change of the engine speed during the operation of the motoring without fuel injection. The swirl ratio of the intake port was simulated according to changes in the crank angle during the four-cycle operation of intake, compression, expansion and exhaust. The swirl ratio represented by the three regions of the piston, center and squish was simulated. Among the three regions, the piston-region swirl ratio is important for effective air-fuel mixing in the engine cylinder. In particular, it was confirmed during the simulation that the piston swirl ratio before and after the compression top dead center (TDC) point when fuel is injected in the DI diesel engine can have a significant effect on the mixing of air and fuel. It was desirable to set the average piston swirl ratio over a crank angle section before and after compression TDC as the representative swirl ratio of the cylinder head intake port according to the change of the engine speed.

  • A numerical code which can simulate unsteady, incompressible and 3-dimensional flows in an engine cylinder has been developed. The governing equations based on the cylindrical coordinate are discretized by the finite volume method with staggered variable arrangements. A geometric conservation rule is also incorporated into the simulation code in order to deal with a moving boundary problem. For the unsteady simulation, a fractional step method is adopted. The law of wall is applied to the wall boundaries and standard $k-\;{\varepsilon}$ model is used to describe the in-cylinder turbulent flow. The model cylinder has one eccentric port, flat piston and flat cylinder-head. The comparisons with experimental data show fairly well qualitative agreement.

  • It is well known that organized vortex rotations swirl and tumble greatly affect the mixing, the combustion and heat transfer processes in engine cylinder. We have developed 3 dimensional numerical simulation codes whose predictions make good agreement with the experimental data. Large eddy simulation based on Smagorinsky subgrid scale model was adopted to describe the turbulence of in-cylinder flows. The tumble motions generated by different inclination angles between valve-port and cylinder head have been calculated. The results show that the angles between direction of induced flow and cylinder walls which the flow collides with play a great role in the formation and generation of tumble motions. Therefore, it is inferred that seat angle and inclination angle are important factors of engine design. In addition, the numerical results of different engine speed -1000 rpm and 3000 rpm are very similar in the flow structure.

  • Pneumatic system has been mainly used as main equipment for actuation and control of compressed air force in manufacturing industry, pneumatic circuit for the most part is used in Meter-Out circuit. Meter-Out circuit method is Flow Control Valve to fit in exhaust part of cylinder port. In the reverse, Meter-In circuit is Flow Control Valve to fit in input part of cylinder port. This study examines the dynamic characteristics comparison of Meter-In and Meter-Out Circuits in the pneumatic circuits. The results of the experimental research are obtained to the followings: i ) System Response is Meter-In Circuit more than Meter-Out one before cushion zone. ii) we conjectured that the collision of piston and head cover is ease to collide Meter-In Circuit more than Meter-Out one at the stroke end part.

  • This paper presents characteristics of steady flow by variation of a combustion chamber and an intake port. Gas flow field inside a combustion chamber is the important factor in improving combustion stability and reduction of emission level. The flow characteristics such as flow coefficient, tumble ratio and swirl ratio are measured by the steady flow rig test with an impulse meter in this study. In the measuring, the valve lifts are varied between 1mm to 10mm. The three combustion chambers and two intake ports were applied to the steady flow apparatus in order to investigate the effect of swirl and tumble on the in-cylinder flow. As a result, tumble ratio were found to be different by variation of the combustion chambers and the intake ports. The data from the present study can be applied to design of a similar engine as basic data.

  • Engine-out HC emissions were investigated during cold and hot start. The tests were conducted according to engine cooling temperatures which were controlled by simulated coolant temperatures of cold and hot start, on a 1.5L, 4-cylinder, 16 valve, multipoint-port-fuel-injection gasoline engine. Real time engine-out HC emissions were measured at a exhaust port and cylinder head using Fast Response Flame Ionization Detector(FRFID). Unburned hydrocarbons emitted at the cold coolant temperature were much higher than those of the hot coolant temperatures. And the main source of the high HC emission was confirmed as misfire at cold coolant temperature. In addition, the effect of intake valve timing on engine-out HC emissions was investigated. The results obtained indicate that optimized intake phasing provides the potential for start-up engine-out HC emissions reduction.

  • In order to reduce the oil consumption for a 2 stroke free piston hydrogen fueled engine, the behaviors of residual lubricant oil of the cylinder wall surface were visualized and oil mass emitted into exhaust port was measured by using research engine with cross-head and eccentric crankshaft. As the results, it was shown that characteristics of residual lubricant oil such as oil thickness and distribution were remarkably different from a conventional 4 stroke engine. It was also analyzed that these tendencies relied on the configuration and installed position of the exhaust port, piston pin boss and so on.

  • Tumble flow test rig has been used as the useful tool in the developing intake system because major flow pattern induced by intake port of DOHC engine is tumble. Angular momentum of in-cylinder tumble flow can not be directly measured by impulse torque meter in the test rig like that of in-cylinder swirl flow due to rotational axis of the flow. Therefore the adaptor to transform tumble to swirl flow must be adapted in the test rig. In this study, using the commercial CFD code STAR-CD, we studied the effects on measured results due to the variation of the major design variables in the adaptor, tube length(L), tube diameter(D) and cylinder height(H). The effect of the attached angle($\theta$) of the test head to the adaptor also was simulated.
