In this study, cyclic triaxial tests were performed with the samples which were anisotropically consolidated using irregular earthquake loading to consider in-situ condition and seismic wave. The consolidation pressure ratio(K) was changed from 0.5 to 1.0. The Ofunato and Hachinohe wave are applied as irregular earthquake loading and liquefaction resistance strength was estimated from excess pore water pressure(EPWP) ratio. As results of the cyclic triaxial tests, buildup of EPWP ratio increased as K value increased. It shows, that the isotropically consolidated sands is more susceptible to liquefaction than anisotropically consolidated sands under equal conditions such as confining pressure and dynamic loading.
The behavior of laterally cyclic loaded piles is affected by the magnitude and number of cycles of cyclic lateral loads as well as loading method (1-way or 2-way loading). In this study, calibration chamber tests were carried out to investigate the effects of loading method of cyclic lateral loads on the behavior of piles driven into sand. Results of the chamber tests show that the permanent lateral displacement of 1-way cyclic loaded piles is developed in the same direction as the first loading, whereas that of 2-way cyclic loaded piles is developed in the reverse direction of the first loading. 1-way cyclic lateral loads cause a decrease of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles, and 2-way cyclic lateral loads cause an increase of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles. The change of ultimate lateral load capacity with loading method of cyclic lateral loads increases with increasing number of cycles. It is also observed that the 1-way cyclic loads generate greater maximum bending moment than 2-way cyclic loads for piles in cyclic loading step and generates smaller maximum bending moment for piles in the ultimate state. It can be attributed to the difference in compaction degree of the soil around the piles with loading method of cyclic lateral loads. In addition, it is founded that 1-way and 2-way cyclic lateral loads cause a decrease in the maximum bending moment of piles in the ultimate state compared with that of piles subjected to only monotonic loads.
Reliable estimation of compressive as well as tensile in-situ stresses is critical in the design and analysis of underground structures and openings in rocks. Kaiser effect technique, which uses acoustic emission from rock specimens under cyclic load, is well established for the estimation of in-situ compressive stresses. This paper investigates the Kaiser effect on marble specimens under cyclic uniaxial compressive as well as cyclic uniaxial tensile conditions. The tensile behavior was studied by means of Brazilian tests. Each specimen was tested by applying the load in four loading cycles having magnitudes of 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of the peak stress. The experimental results confirm the presence of Kaiser effect in marble specimens under both compressive and tensile loading conditions. Kaiser effect was found to be more dominant in the first two loading cycles and started disappearing as the applied stress approached the peak stress, where felicity effect became dominant instead. This behavior was observed to be consistent under both compressive and tensile loading conditions and can be applied for the estimation of in-situ rock stresses as a function of peak rock stress. At a micromechanical level, Kaiser effect is evident when the pre-existing stress is smaller than the crack damage stress and ambiguous when pre-existing stress exceeds the crack damage stress. Upon reaching the crack damage stress, the cracks begin to propagate and coalesce in an unstable manner. Hence acoustic emission observations through Kaiser effect analysis can help to estimate the crack damage stresses reliably thereby improving the efficiency of design parameters.

Cracked component analysis is needed for structural integrity analysis under seismic loading. Under large amplitude cyclic loading conditions, the change in material properties can be complex, depending on the magnitude of plastic strain. Therefore the cracked component analysis under cyclic loading should consider appropriate cyclic hardening model. This study introduces a procedure for determining an appropriate cyclic hardening model for cracked component analysis. The test material was nuclear-grade TP316 stainless steel. The material cyclic hardening was simulated using the Chaboche combined hardening model. The kinematic hardening model was determined from standard tensile test to cover the high and wide strain range. The isotropic hardening model was determined by simulating C(T) test under cyclic loading using ABAQUS debonding analysis. The suitability of the material hardening model was verified by comparing load-displacement curves of cyclic C(T) tests under different load ratios.

Dynamic response of structures can be evaluated experimentally by conducting cyclic loading tests. It has been known that steel materials are rate-dependent and the lateral response of a structure is significantly affected by the presence of axial force. However, the rate-dependency of steel column structures subjected to both axial and lateral loads has not been sufficiently studied yet due to the difficulty of controlling the axial force in a real-time manner during test. This study introduces an advanced way to apply the axial load in real-time to a column specimen using the adaptive time series (ATS) compensator and the flexible loading beam (FLB), where the H-shape steel columns made of SS275 are used for monotonic and cyclic loading tests with various loading rates with axial loads. The lateral strength and post-yield response of the steel columns are compared for each of monotonic and cyclic loading tests. The estimating equation of yield stress of various strain rate has proposed and finite element analysis were performed for comparison.

Friction-type reinforcing members(FRM) to enhance the resistance to wind loads of a transmission tower through both stiffness strengthening and damping increase are energy dissipation devices that utilize bending deflection of a tower leg. In this paper, the hysteretic behavior of the transmission tower structure with FRMs was experimentally investigated through cyclic loading tests on a half scale substructure model. Firstly, the variation of friction forces and durability of the FRM depending on the type of friction-inducing materials used in the FRM were examined by performing the cyclic loading tests on the FRM. Secondly, cyclic loading tests of a half-scale two-dimensional substructure model of a transmission tower with FRMs were conducted. Test results show that the FRM, of which desired maximum friction force is easily regulated by adjusting the amplitude of the torque applied to the bolts, have stable hysteretic behaviors and it is found that there exists the optimum torque depending on a design load by investigating the amount of energy dissipation of the FRMs according to the increase of torque.

The general concept of reinforced roadbed in the high-speed railway is to cope with the soft ground for the bearing capacity and settlement of foundation soil. The cyclic plate load tests were performed to determine the behavior of reinforced ground with multiple layers of geogrid underlying by soft soil. Five series of test were conducted with varying the soil profile conditions including the ground level, type of soil, and the thickness of each soil layer. Based on these plate load tests, laboratory model tests under cyclic loading were conducted to know the effect of geogrid reinforcement in particular for the high-speed rail roadbed. The permanent settlement and the behavior of earth pressure in reinforced roadbed subjected to a combination of static and dynamic loading are presented.
Offshore wind turbines have been constructed extensively throughout the world. These turbines are subjected to approximately $10^8$ horizontal load cycles produced from wind, waves, and current during their lifetimes. Therefore, the accumulated displacement of the foundation under horizontal cyclic loading has significant effects on the foundation design of a wind turbine. Akili(2006) and Achmus et al.(2009) performed cyclic triaxial tests on dry sands and proposed an empirical model for predicting the accumulated plastic strain of sands under long-term cyclic loading. In this study, cyclic triaxial tests were performed to analyze the cyclic loading behaviors of dry sands. A total of 27 test cases were performed by varying three parameters: the relative density of the sands, cyclic load level, and confining stress. The test results showed that the accumulated plastic strain increased with an increase in the cyclic load level and a decrease in the relative density of the sand. The confining stress had less effect on the plastic strain. In addition, the plastic strain at the 1st loading cycle was about 57% of the accumulated strain at 1,000 cycles. Finally, the input parameters of the empirical models of Akili(2006) and Achmus et al.(2009) were evaluated by using the relative density of the sand and the cyclic load level.
A fundamental study of drilled shafts subjected to lateral cyclic loading in weathered soil was carried out based on field tests and numerical analysis. The emphasis was given on quantifying the cyclic p-y curve function from lateral cyclic loading tests and three-dimensional finite element analysis. Lateral cyclic loading tests and three-dimensional finite element analysis were carried out to investigate the behavior of drilled shafts according to the direction of cyclic loading. Based on the field tests and numerical analysis, a modified lateral load transfer relationship and design chart with degradation factors were proposed by considering the characteristics of cyclic loading. It was found that the prediction by the proposed p-y curve function is in good agreement with the general trends observed by in-situ measurements, and it represents a practical improvement in the prediction of lateral displacement and bending moment distribution of drilled shafts subjected to cyclic loading.
