Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to determine an optimal number of cycle times for the replacement under the circumstance where the system is replaced at the periodic time and the multiple number of working cycles whichever occurs first and the system is minimally repaired between the replacements if it fails. Methods: The system is replaced at periodic time () or cycle time, whichever occurs first, and is repaired minimally when it fails between successive replacements. To determine the optimal number of cycle times, the expected total cost rate is optimized with respect to the number of cycle times, where the expected total cost rate is defined as the ratio of the expected total cost between replacements to the expected time between replacements. Results: In this paper, we conduct a sensitivity analysis to find the following results. First, when the expected number of failures per unit time increases, the optimal number of cycle times decreases. Second, when the periodic time for replacement becomes longer, the optimal number of cycle times decreases. Third, when the expected value for exponential distribution of the cycle time increases, the optimal number of cycle times increases. Conclusion: A mathematical model is suggested to find the optimal number of cycle times and numerical examples are provided through the sensitivity analysis on the model parameters to see the patterns for changes of the optimal number of cycle times.

The good performance of a vortex shedder is defined by strong and stable vortex generated under the condition of most linearity in Strouhal number and low power loss. In this paper, the flow past a bluff body of circular cylinder with a slit normal to the flow has been analyzed focusing on drag coefficient, linearity of Strouhal number and flow resistance (K-factor). The ANSYS/FLUENT package is used for flow simulation and the integration method of computational code to iSIGHT platform is employed for automated design cycle. This study results the design with (0.20~0.267) blockage ratio and 0.10 slit ratio as the best shedder for vortex flowmeter and this results are in well agreement with the experiment. As the combination of GAMBIT, FLUENT, and iSIGHT substitutes the design parameters automatically according to the input data, this method designs effectively the vortex shedder with less design cycle time and low manufacturing cost eliminating the human intervention bottleneck.

The closed cycle diesel propulsion system is free from the problem of the intake air, exhaust gas and their control that are associated with the conventional diesel propulsion system. The system is composed of a main engine, an exhaust cooler. a $CO_2$ scrubber and a $O_2$ mixer. In this paper, a hardware using microprocessor is proposed in order to monitor and control the oxygen and ratio of specific heat for underwater diesel propulsion system. Also simulation is carried out to ascertain the performance of proposed system.

Cycle simulation is peformed for two types of the desiccant cooling system incorporating a regenerative evaporative cooler. The cooling capacity and COP are evaluated at various effectiveness values of the regenerative evaporative cooler, the desiccant rotor and the sensible heat exchanger. As either of the effectiveness of the regenerative evaporative cooler or the humidity effectiveness of the desiccant rotor increases, both the cooling capacity and COP increase, but the enthalpy leak ratio gives the opposite effect on the system performance. It is found that COP of cycle A mainly depends on the humidity effectiveness of the desiccant rotor, while for cycle B enthalpy leak ratio of desiccant rotor has the major impact on COP. The effect of the sensible heat exchanger on the cooling capacity is small about 1/10 compared with those of other components.

This paper presents a numerical study on the performance of a vapor compression cycle equipped with an ejector as an expansion device to improve the COP by reducing the expansion loss and compressor work. The simulation is carried out using a model based on the conservation of mass, energy and momentum in the ejector. From the results of the simulation, the vapor compression cycle equipped with an ejector showed a maximum COP improvement of 14.0% when using R134a refrigerant and 16.8% when using R1234yf. In addition, the performance of the system with an ejector represents the increased performance as the temperature difference between condensing and evaporating increased.

9-12% Cr steels have been used in thermal power plants which repeat start and stop operations. Major factors of fatigue life are temperature, frequency, stress ratio, holding time, microstructure, and environment. Normally, fatigue life decreases at high temperature, low frequency, high stress ratio, and long holding time conditions. A Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel, called G91, was developed at ORNL (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA) and was adopted as a high-temperature structural material in the ASME Code in 2004. However, its low-cycle fatigue and fatigue crack growth characteristics have been rarely studied. In this work, we have investigated the low-cycle fatigue crack growth behaviors of G91 steel under various test conditions in terms of temperature and stress ratio. As temperature and stress ratio increase, the crack growth rate becomes faster and striation distance also increases. On the other hand, the number of branch cracks decreases.

In this study, an absorption power cycle, which can be used for a low-temperature heat source driven power cycle such as geothermal power generation, was investigated and optimized in terms of power by the simulation method. A steady-state simulation model was adopted to analyze and optimize its performance. Simulations were carried out for the given heat source and sink inlet temperatures, and the given flow rates were based on the typical power plant thermal-capacitance-rate ratio. The cycle performance was evaluated for two independent variables: the ammonia fraction at the separator inlet and the maximum cycle pressure. Results showed that the absorption power cycle can generate electricity up to about 14 kW per 1 kg/s of heat source when the heat source temperature, heat sink temperature, and thermal-capacitance-rate ratio are $100^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and 5, respectively.

The energy efficiency is extremely significant in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which deliver the data sensed in the sensor field, using wireless communications. Under the characteristics of WSN, many MAC protocols employ the Duty Cycle mechanism which continuously operates Wakeup and Sleep periods, for the energy efficiency. However, constant Wakeup period in general Duty Cycle incurs the limited performance of the energy efficiency and the receiving ratio. For addressing this, we design and propose a new scheme called Variable Wakeup Period, considering local traffic conditions. Our scheme enhances receiving ratio by increasing Wakeup period under the high traffic condition, and makes high energy efficiency by decreasing Wakeup period under the otherwise condition. In addition, we evaluate the performance of our scheme by performing the simulation, which experiments the previous synchronous and asynchronous MAC protocols, and which also experiments the same protocols with the proposed scheme, for comparative evaluations.

Recently, research on high-efficiency refrigeration cycles that apply an ejector to basic cycles has progressed actively. The role of the ejector and the performance of refrigeration cycles are subordinate to ejector locations. In this study, the performance of three refrigeration cycles with different ejector locations is compared and analyzed. The results showed an increased COP in all cycles due to the application of the ejector, with the highest increase of 44% compared to a basic refrigeration cycle. The ejector refrigeration cycle proposed in this study presents the highest COP, 3.47. Moreover, the decrease in condensation capacity in Bergander's cycle, Xing's cycle, and our proposed ejector refrigeration cycle went up to 21%. In refrigeration cycles applying the ejector, the pressure ratio of the ejector, the vapor fraction of discharge, and compression ratio are important factors for COP enhancement. For this reason, detailed and accurate control of these is significant.
Studies in liquid-vapor ejector, which performs a great efficiency in refrigeration cycle is highly concerned. This paper is based on basic refrigeration cycle and three ejector refrigeration cycles and the comparison and contrasts about when 6 different refrigerants are applied to such refrigeration cycles. All cycles had a percentage increase of COP from 4 to 74% when ejector was applied, and the source of increasement was the decrease of total work done due to ejector's pressure recovery function. When R-245fa is applied to cycle (d), results showed that COP was the most superior in such cycle, R-245fa showed high volume entrainment ratio in all cycles. Future studies in refrigeration cycles will require more knowledge and experiments on ejector's appliance to refrigeration cycles and the actuation of such functions.
