  • The purpose of this study was to apply the position, the form and the angle of the attrition in the natural maxillary central incisors shown on the labial surface to the artificial teeth in the field of prosthetic dentistry. So we should exactly alter the molds of artificial teeth in individual cases in order to make artificial teeth more natural. 226 extracted teeth of the maxillary central incisors were chosen as materials. I have exactly examined the teeth with a magnifying glass and a circular graduator under concentrated light. The observation brought me the following results: 1) The attrition was most prevailing at the range from the mesial angle to the middle part of cutting edge in the left maxillary central incisor, and distal angle of cutting edge in the right maxillary central incisor. 2) On the attrite form of both angles, the angulated form was more than 4 times as frequent as rounded form in the mesial angle, and almost equal in the distal angle. 3) On the attrite form of cutting edge, mesial attrite form including mesial angle was most frequent in the left maxillary central incisor, and distal attrite form including distal angle in the right maxillary central incisor. 4) The angle made by the labial surface and the attrite surface was about $39^{\circ}$, and more than 70% of the total examined teeth were included at the range from $31^{\circ}\;to\;50^{\circ}$. 5) None attrite form at the cutting edge was about 12% and completely attrite form at the cutting edge was about 27% of examined teeth.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Er:YAG laser on cutting of efficacy of enamel and dentin in primary and permanent teeth. We used the enamel and dentin specimens of human teeth which contain the physiologic saline and maintain the pulpal pressure in dentinal tubules. Each specimen was exposed to Er:YAG laser with non-contact mode under different treatment condition of irradiation energy, pulse repetition rate. We investigated the cutting efficacy of Er:YAG laser by Scanning Intensity Microscopy, and obtained following results. 1. Cutting volume of enamel and dentin in primary and permanent teeth were increased by increasing the irradiation energy, pulse repetition rate. 2. Cutting volume of primary teeth was larger than that of permanent teeth. 3. Cutting volume of dentin was larger than that of enamel in primary and permanent teeth. From these results, Er:YAG laser would be more effective in cutting dentin than enamel, and in cutting primary teeth than permanent teeth for clinical application.

  • This study was conducted to observe the microscopic structures of cavities formed after ablation of primary teeth, permanent teeth, enamel and dentin in using a bur and cavities formed after ablation using laser and the following results were obtained after comparing the effects of ablation. Using a #330 bur and Er:YAG laser irradiated at 150 mJ, 200 mJ, 250 mJ and 300 mJ all at the frequency of 5 Hz, 1 mm enamel and dentin samples were ablated and the ablation time was measured. In order to measure the surfaces ablated, 5 each of primary teeth and permanent teeth were ablated using a #330 bur and Er:YAG laser at 150 mJ, 200 mJ, 250 mJ and 300 mJ for 1 sec and the cross section and vertical section were observed. The following results were obtained : 1. Cutting time of Er:YAG laser was longer than that of conventinal high-speed bur regardless of teeth type. 2. Cutting on enamel, Cutting time of conventional high-speed bur in deciduous teeth was longer than in permanent teeth(P<0.05). But Er:YAG laser was not showed any difference between the deciduous and permanent teeth(P>0.05). 3. Cutting on dentin, Cutting time of conventional high-speed bur in permanent teeth was longer than deciduous teeth. Er:YAG laser of 150 mJ, 5 Hz in permanent teeth was longer than in deciduous teeth(p<0.05). But laser of other power did not showed mean difference. 4. The cavity surface treated with the convetional high-speed bur revealed a relatively flat appearance, almost covered with a debris-like smear layer. Cavity wall showed striped appearance because of blade of bur. 5. The cavity surface treated by the Er:YAG laser system was irregular or rough surface with the absence charring, carbonization, or cracking of the dentin. In addition, there was an absence of a smear layer. Cavity floor was round and relatively smooth. According to these results, cutting time of Er:YAG laser was almostly same in permanent and deciduous teeth, but more effective in dentin than enamel. Cutting the sample, Er:YAG laser was needed more time than conventional bur. But SEM findings suggested that laser device produced favorable surface characteristic(i.e, no smear layer, irregular surface, cracking).

  • The cross section of the circular rod type workpiece to be cut in the band saw machine is variable at every moment in the sawing process. When the cutting feed rate is fixed to the constant speed, the cutting edges of the band saw teeth are also variabl eat any moment, so this causes the wear of the land saw teeth and the deterioration of the quality in the surface roughness. In this study, to work out this kind of problem basically, the mean cutting force of a tooth in the band saw was estimated by using the workpiece which was smaller than the interval of each tooth, i.e. band saw pitch, in the thickness. Then the static cutting forces were predicted by appling the mean cutting forces referred above to the mechanistic cutting force model which were analyzed through the geometric profile of a band saw tooth.

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop data for a hygiene promotion program for elders living on rural islands. Method: Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data. Results: Most of the elders reported brushed their teeth and washing their faces twice a day. For other types of washing, 98.8% of reported washing their hands after the toilet and 22.8% reported washing their anus after defecation. Most of the elders reported changing their underwear two to three times a month and cutting their nails more than four times a month. Itchiness was reported by 24%. There were significant differences according to age for teeth brushing, face washing, shampooing, bathing, washing hands after the toilet, and cutting nails. According to sex, there were significant differences in teeth brushing, face washing, washing hands after using the toilet, washing anus after defecation, changing underwear, cutting nails, and feeling itchy. The elders showed significant differences in bathing, changing underwear, and cutting nails according to subjective economic status. They showed significant differences in teeth brushing and changing underwear when they lived with their families. Conclusion: In order to develop a proper hygiene promotion program for the elderly, their age, sex, and physical condition should be considered as well as their environmental, economical, and geographical condition.

  • In this research, in order to predict the cutting force using a mechanistic model, specific cutting force was firstly obtained through the cutting experiments. Band sawing process is similar to a milling, that is multi-point cutting. Therefore it is not easy matter to evaluate specific cutting force. Thus, the thickness of workpiec was made smaller than one pitch of the saw in terms of fly cutting in the face milling process. Then the cutting force was predicted by analyzing the geometric shape of a saw tooth The tooth shape used in the research was raker set style that was generally used in band sawing. And a set of teeth is comprised of three teeth, those are ranked as left, straight and right. The mechanistic model was developed in this study considered those shapes of each tooth. From the validation experiments, the predicted cutting forces coincided well with the measured ones. Therefore the predicted cutting forces can be used for the adaptive control of saw engaging feed rate in the band sawing.

  • The CAD model of a elliptical gear for wire cutting has been developed. The rolling contact of pitch ellipses whose rotation axes coincide with their focus has been analyzed, and the perimeter of the pitch ellipse has been divided into equal-length segments by the number of teeth. A master tooth profile, which is a composite curve of circular arcs that represents involute, has been introduced. The elliptical gear has been designed by imposing the master tooth on the divided points of the pitch ellipse, and a full fillet has been achieved between neighbour teeth. Thus, the whole profile of an elliptical gear is a composite curve of arcs only, and consequently NC codes for wire cutting can be easily generated. Furthermore, a computer simulation program is developed to verify the mesh of the elliptical gear.

  • In order to analytically predict tapping torque and thrust force in high speed tapping, a cutting model for main cutting edge with a uniformly restricted tool-chip contact area were developed. From this model equations are derived for the prediction of tapping torque given the cutting conditions, tap geometry, and an empirical factor which is related to the workmaterial. Computed values of torque is shown to compare favorably with those obtained from tapping tests on 16MnCr5. The applied torque about the cutting edge of teeth at lead chamfer is estimated respectively and it is shown that observed value is gradually decreased with following teeth.

  • Tool fracture index(TFI) was developed in order not only to detect tool fracture but also to predict the amount of tool fracture in face milling. TFI is calculated by using peak-to-valley values of cutting force acting on teeth and their ratio between the adjacent teeth. When the tool fractures, a large value of TFI proportional to the amount of tool fracture was obtained periodically and decreased gradually. It was found that TFI is independent of cutter runout and it almost does not vary during transient cutting such as cutting condition change during machining. The threshold of tool fracture can be analytically determined by TFI developed in this paper, because the magnitude of TFI was shown to be dependent on the ratio of the amount of tool fracture to feed per tooth and immersion ratio. It was possible to predict the amount of tool fracture in experiments by using the proposed TFI.

  • End-milling is intermittent cutting process performed by a tool with a number of teeth. Its cutting forces are commonly measured by the tool dynamometer which has rectangular coordinates. In this case, the pattern of cutting forces is different according to cutting conditions. At a certain cutting condition, the sign of cutting force changes from positive to negative during a revolution of one tooth. The change of force direction excites a cutting tool and severe vibration arises when radial depth of cut increases. In this study, cutting experiments and simulations were carried out in order to explain the cause of the change of the cutting force direction. In addition, the effect of the cutting force change was discussed in terms of chatter vibration in end milling.
