  • In general, the earlier linear-phase MAXFLAT(maximally flat) lowpass FIR filters have the main disadvantage of a gain response in the half frequency band $(0{\leq}w{\leq}{\pi}/2)$ by the closed form transfer functions used in design techniques for realizing them. Moreover, most of them has existent problems as follows : ripple error in the stopband, gentle-cutoff attenuation, phase and group delay and inexact cutoff frequency response. It is due to the approximation algorithms such as Chebyshev norm and Remez exchange which are used to approach MAXFLAT and linear-phase characteristics in frequency domain. In this paper, a new mathematically closed-form transfer function is introduced for the design of MAXFLAT lowpass FIR filters which have the zero-phase and wideband-gain response. In addition, we verify that the closed-form transfer function is easily realized due to our generalized formulas derived newly by using MAXFLAT conditions including an arbitrary cutoff point. This method is, therefore, useful for "simple and quick designs". Conclusively, we propose a technique for the design of new zero-phase wideband MAXFLAT lowpass FIR filters which can achieve sharp-cutoff attenuation exceeding 250 dB almost everywhere.

  • In this paper, we proposed a novel compact microstrip lowpass filter with an ultra-wide stopband and prominent cutoff sharpness using slot on the ground plane and microstrip shunt open stub. The microstrip shunt open stub and slot exhibit the different stopband response. The combined characteristics of these structures gives the ultra-wide stopband characteristics and the coupling effect between slots on the ground plane makes the prominent cutoff sharpness. The fabricated microstrip lowpass filter with the size of 20.1 mm ${\times}$ 18.7 mm has -3 ㏈ cutoff frequency at 1.187 ㎓ and -20 ㏈ stopband from 1.33 ㎓ to over 20 ㎓ and the insertion loss in the passband is less than -0.4 ㏈ form DC to 1 ㎓.

  • A new miniaturized 4-port waveguide generating a transverse electromagnetic wave is proposed. The waveguide presents enhanced performance of higher field uniformity in extended test volume up to an increased test frequency limit compared to that of the conventional 2-port waveguide. The advantageous features of the proposed waveguide have been obtained through a new design scheme based on effective miniaturization maintaining good impedance matching. Consequently, we can provide a more accurate electromagnetic compatibility test method, covering larger devices operating in higher frequencies, which is a marked improvement upon the conventional approaches.

  • The cutoff frequency of the output LC filters of PWM inverters limits the control bandwidth of the converter system while it attenuates voltage ripples that are caused by inverter switching activities. For a selected cutoff frequency of an output LC filter, an infinite number of L-C combinations is possible. This paper analyses the characteristics of output LC filters for PWM inverters terms of the L-C combinations. Practical circuit conditions such as no-loads, full resistive-loads, and inductive-load conditions are considered in the analysis. This paper proposes a LC filter design method for PWM inverters considering both the voltage ynamics and he inverter stack size. An experimental PWM inverter system based on the proposed output LC lter design uideline is built and tested.

  • In the solar atmosphere, below the region of temperature minimum, temperature decreases with height and above it, temperature increases with height. Therefore the inference of temperature minimum is a basis of the study about the solar atmosphere and heating problem. The temperature of the temperature minimum region can be inferred from acoustic cutoff frequency. According to a recent study the acoustic cutoff frequency is related to the peak frequency of the power spectrum the chromospheric three-minute velocity oscillations. Using this relationship, we infer the temperature of temperature minimum. The three minute velocity oscillation and its power spectrum are obtained for a pore observed with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) $H{\alpha}$ band. We present the inferred temperature and compare it with the temperature of Maltby model. We also investigate the effect of the inclination of magnetic field on the temperature minimum.

  • Recently, diagnostics of plasma becomes more important due to requirement of precise control of plasma processing based on measurement of plasma characteristics. The Langmuir probe has been used for the diagnostics but it has an inevitable uncertainty and error sources such as incorrect tip length and RF noise. Instead of the Langmuir probe, various diagnostic methods have been developed and researched. The cutoff probe is promising one for plasma density using microwaves and resonance phenomenon at the plasma frequency. The cutoff probe has various advantages as follows; (i) it is simple and robust, (ii) it uses few assumptions, and (iii) it is free from deposition by reactive gas. However, the cutoff probe also has uncertainty and error sources such as gap between tips, tip length, direction of tip plane, and RF noise. In this study, the uncertainty and error sources in manufacturing both probes and in diagnostics process were analyzed via comparative experiment at various discharge conditions. Furthermore, to reveal the user dependence of both probes, three well trained Ph. D students made the Langmuir probe and the cutoff probe, respectively, and it were analyzed. Thought this study, it is established that reliability and validity of the Langmuir probe and the cutoff probe related with not only the intrinsic characteristics of probes but also probe user.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate distribution characteristics of incised meander cutoff in Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces of Central Korea. The density of meander cutoff is highest in the mountain rivers including Naerin and Dongdae flowing on Jeongseon-gun and Inje-gun of Gangwon Province. Most of meander cutoff process has been occurred repeatedly during the Quaternary period, especially concentrated in the period of climatic change between glacial and interglacial stages. In the aspect of the lithology, the density of cutoff is highest in sedimentary rock, but lowest in igneous rock. As for geological structure, its frequency is high at $11{\sim}20km$ westerly away from the Taebaek Mountains, at subsequent channel, lower part of resequent channel, and channels crossing the fault line. The relation between distance from the Taebaek Mountains and altitude is very obvious at the western side of the Taebaek Mountains. The values of altitude, height from riverbed, and stream order are highest at sedimentary rock and lowest at volcanic rock.

  • This paper deals with the lightning surge protective devices with combination of varistor and LC filter. UP to now, the varistor alone were used as overvoltage protection devices fer the AC power mains. In this work, in order to improve the cutoff performance of surge protective device, the hybrid circuit surge protective device for an AC single phase mains was designed and investigated. The first stage of hybrid circuit is to remove most of any large surge energy and protect the second stage components. The purpose of the second is to protect the load and increase the cutoff capacity of surge protective devices. Also LC filter attenuates the remnant that travels downstream from the first stage component and the high frequency noises. As a consequence, it was found that the proposed hybrid surge protective device for AC power mains has a variety of advantages such as low and tight clamping voltage, high frequency noise reduction and large cutoff capacity.

  • This paper investigated the effects of frequency band limitation on perceptual characteristics of Korean consonants. Monosyllabic speech (144 syllables of CV type, 56 syllables of VC type, 8 syllables of V type) produced by two announcers were low- and high-pass filtered with cutoff frequencies ranging from 300 to 5000 Hz. Six listeners with normal hearing performed perception test by types of filter and cutoff frequencies. We reported phoneme recognition rates and types of perception error of band-limited Korean consonants to examine how frequency distortion in the process of speech transmission affect listener's perception. The results showed that recognition rates varied with the following factors: position in a syllable, manner of articulation, place of articulation, and phonation types. Consonants in the final position were stronger to the frequency band limitation than those in the initial position. Fricatives and Affricates are stronger than stops. Fortis consonants were less stronger than their lenis or aspirated counterparts. Types of perception error also varied depending on such factors as consonant's place of articulation: In case of bilabial stops, they were perceived as alveolar stops with while in cases of alveolar and velar stops, there were changes in phonation types without any change in the place of articulation.

  • In this paper, a 3rd-order Chebyshev current-mode filter in 1.8V-$0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS parameter is designed. The core circuit of the current-mode filter is composed with the proposed voltage-controlled frequency tunable current-mode integrator. Using the proposed current-mode integrator, the cutoff frequency of the filter can be controlled and also total power consumption can be reduced. HSPICE simulation results show the cutoff frequency of the filter is controlled between 1.2MHz and 10.1MHz, and the power consumption is 2.85mW at Vdd=1.8V.
