  • As insurers have undergone changing customer expectations, increased cross-industry competition and restructured distribution channels, they need to enhance customer relationships, cut costs, increase agility and streamline operations while differentiating the core competency. As such, the importance of e-business transformation has increased where organizational core processes are restructured around customers and interned-based technology is adopted for flexible and adaptive information systems. This paper presents a case study of process innovation for e-business transformation in a Korea-based leading property & casualty insurance company. The company initiated three years-long e-business transformation program to remain competitive and to keep sustainable growth under risky and down economy. The program, which covered enterprise-wide business processes such as product, marketing & sales, customer, claim, investment & loan, accountings, etc., included redesigning processes from customers' viewpoint and then implementing process-aligned information systems. Leadership, sponsorship, change management, performance measurement, business and IT alignment, empowerment, and customized methodology, were emphasized throughout the program. As a result, the company could expect not only improvements in customer-centricity, sales productivity, and operational excellence but also increased revenues and profits in the next three years. The presented case addresses a feasible approach for enterprise-wide e-business transformation. Although the strategies, actions, and business and IT models are not described in detail due to confidentiality, the methodology and the success factors would be applicable to other insurers and possibly organizations in different industries.

  • Short-term traffic flow prediction plays an important role in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in areas such as transportation management, traffic control and guidance. For short-term traffic flow regression predictions, the main challenge stems from the non-stationary property of traffic flow data. In this paper, we design an ensemble cascading prediction framework based on extremely randomized trees (extra-trees) using a boosting technique called EET to predict the short-term traffic flow under non-stationary environments. Extra-trees is a tree-based ensemble method. It essentially consists of strongly randomizing both the attribute and cut-point choices while splitting a tree node. This mechanism reduces the variance of the model and is, therefore, more suitable for traffic flow regression prediction in non-stationary environments. Moreover, the extra-trees algorithm uses boosting ensemble technique averaging to improve the predictive accuracy and control overfitting. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that extra-trees have been used as fundamental building blocks in boosting committee machines. The proposed approach involves predicting 5 min in advance using real-time traffic flow data in the context of inherently considering temporal and spatial correlations. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves higher accuracy and lower variance and computational complexity when compared to the existing methods.

  • Recently, inverter control systems have attracted immense attention to increase the energy efficiency. However, such systems use repeated on/off high currents for linear operation control, instead of the prevalent step variable current control method. Hence, there arise concerns of personal and property damage, especially due to the durability, explosive characteristics, and operating speed of the fuse, which is responsible for safety and is one of the internal components using current control. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an IEC60127-4 SMD sub-miniature fuse, consisting of Ag-Cu alloys and ceramic powder for arc soothing. The IEC60127-4 SMD sub-miniature fuse has high durability and cut-off capacity, and operates safely in dangerous circumstances caused by the inverter control system.

  • The microstructure, phase, and mechanical properties of three aged porcelain insulators which were manufactured in different years (1973, 1995 and 2008) and which were used in the field for different amounts of time, were investigated. With X-ray 3D computed tomography (CT), defects with ~mm size can be detected without destroying the aged insulators. Defects of small specimens, which are cut from the aged insulators and polished, are analyzed with optical and scanning electron microscopy (OM and SEM), and defects of um size are detected by OM and SEM. The number and size of defects in all the aged insulators are similar. Porcelain insulators manufactured in 1973 contain more $SiO_2$ (quartz and cristobalite) than those manufactured in 2008. Those manufactured in 2008 contain more $Al_2O_3$ than those manufactured earlier. The Vickers hardness of the insulator manufactured in 1973 has the lowest value. The formation of the cristobalite ($SiO_2$) in the insulator manufactured in 1973 which can come from the phase transformation of quartz can cause stress in the insulator by formation of microcracks, which can lead to the low hardness of the insulator.

  • Fabrication of a complex aluminum alloy by the ARB process using dissimilar aluminum alloys has been carried out. Two-layer stack ARB was performed for up to six cycles at ambient temperature without a lubricant according to the conventional procedure. Dissimilar aluminum sheets of AA1050 and AA5052 with thickness of 1 mm were degreased and wire-brushed for the ARB process. The sheets were then stacked together and rolled to 50% reduction such that the thickness became 1 mm again. The sheet was then cut into two pieces of identical length and the same procedure was repeated for up to six cycles. A sound complex aluminum alloy sheet was successfully fabricated by the ARB process. The tensile strength increased as the number of ARB cycles was increased, reaching 298 MPa after 5 cycles, which is about 2.2 times that of the initial material. The average grain size was $24{\mu}m$ after 1 cycle, and became $1.8{\mu}m$ after 6 cycles.

  • Owing to the excellent corrosion resistance of titanium alloys, they are widely used as materials for aircraft components. However, in terms of machining, dimensional deformation methods vary significantly, such as forging, owing to their difficult-to-cut property and the uncontrollable vibration generated during machining. A method to minimize the vibration generated during machining by applying advanced tools and controlling the sequence of machining processes, which can improve the machinability and precision of titanium alloy-forged low-angle components, is proposed herein. Using the proposed tool and based on a process order experiment, the efficiency of the machining process is verified by measuring the dimensional deformation of the low-angle component.

  • In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted on the morphological and property changes of laser-induced nanocarbon (LINC) as a function of laser process parameters. LINC was formed on the surfaces of polyimide films with different backbone structures under various process conditions, including laser power, scan speed, and resolution. Three different forms of LINC electrodes (i.e., continuous 3D porous graphene, wooly nanocarbon fibers, line cut) were formed depending on the laser power and scan speed. Furthermore, heteroatom doping induced from the chemical structure of the polyimide during laser patterning was found to be effective in modifying the electrical properties of LINC electrodes. The LINC surfaces exhibited different microstructures depending on the laser beam resolution under constant laser power and scan speed, allowing for controllable surface wettability. The correlation between the chemical structure of the polymer substrate, laser process parameters, and carbonized surface properties in this study is expected to be utilized as fundamental understanding for the manufacturing of next-generation carbon-based electronic devices.

  • TLRs are pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) whose cytoplasmic signalling domain is similar to that of IL-1. The extracellular domain of TLRs serve as the binding site of pathogen associated molecular patterns. TLRs are found on both plasma and endosomal membranes and they mainly exert their function by activating genes which lead to production of inflammatory factors. The latest TLR to be discovered, TLR10 is a unique TLR which exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. TLR10 is found on the plasma membrane with other TLRs namely TLR1, TLR2, TLR4, TLR5 and TLR6. Studies have revealed that TLR10 is found on the same gene cluster with TLR1 and TLR6 and is also a coreceptor of TLR2. Up to date, TLR10 is the only TLR which exhibit anti-inflammatory property. Previously, TLR10 was thought to be an "orphan receptor" but much recent studies have identified ligands for TLR10. Currently there is no review article on TLR10 that has been published. In this narrative review, we are going to give an account of TLR10, its functions mainly as an anti-inflammatory PRR and its possible applications as a target in therapeutics.

  • To improve the adhesion properties between the conductive paste and PET film, the PET film was chemically treated using acids and bases and physically treated through corona discharge. A paste using ethylcellulose, which is used in actual industrial manufacturing and silane-treated CNF, as a binder was manufactured and coated on PET film to compare the adhesive properties. The specimen coated with a paste containing silane-treated CNF as a binder on a corona discharge-treated PET film showed the highest level of adhesion, 5B. On the other hand, it was confirmed that when PET film was chemically treated with acid/base, there was no improvement in adhesive properties.

  • We have studied to obtain the frequency characteristics of the Surface Acoustic Wave(SAW) bandpass filter, having low shape factor, it's interdigital transducer(IDT) was formed on the 35° Y-cut X-propagation Quartz substrate and was evaporated by Aluminium. And then, we performed computer-simulation by a simulator. And, we can design that the apodization weighted type IDT as an input transducer of the filter and the withdrawal weighted type IDT as an output transducer of the filter from the results of our computer-simulation. Also, we have employed that the number of pairs of the input and output IDT are 2200 pairs and 1000pairs, respectively and used the Kaiser-Bessel window function in order to minimize the effect of ripple. And, while the width and the space of IDT's finger are 6㎛ m and 5.75㎛, respectively and we could obtain the resonable results when the IDT thickness was 6000Å in consideration of the ratio of SAW's wavelength, and IDT aperture is 2mm. Frequency response of the fabricated SAW bandpass filter has the property that the center frequency is about 70MHz, shape factor is less than 1.3, bandwidth at the 1.5dB is probably 1.3MHz, out-band attenuation is almost -45dB, insertion loss is 19dB and ripple in the width of bandpass is 1dB approximately. Therefore, these frequency characteristics of the fabricated SAW bandpass filter are agreed well with the designed values.
