The ornamental industry encompasses cut flower, pot plant, turfgrass and nursery stock production and is an important part of the agricultural sector. As internationally traded commodities, cut flowers and plants are an integral part of the economy of a number of developing countries in South America, the Caribbean and Africa. Genetic modification (GM) is a tool with great potential to the ornamental horticulture industry. The rapid progress in our knowledge of plant molecular biology can accelerate the breeding ornamental plants using recombinant DNA technology techniques. Not only is there the possibility of creating new, novel products the driver of the industry but also the potential to develop varieties requiring less chemical and energy inputs. As an important non-food agricultural sector the use of genetically modified (GM) ornamental crops may also be ideal for the intensive farming necessary to generate pharmaceuticals and other useful products in GM plants. To date, there are only a few ornamental GM products in development and only one, a carnation genetically modified for flower colour, in the marketplace. International Flower Developments, a joint venture between Florigene Ltd. in Australia and Suntory Ltd. of Japan, developed the GM carnations. These flowers are currently on sale in USA, Japan and Australia. The research, development and commercialization of these products are summarized. The long term prospects for ornamental GM products, like food crops, will be determined by the regulatory environment, and the acceptance of GM products in the marketplace. These critical factors will be analysed in the context of the current legislative environment, and likely public and industry opinion towards ornamental genetically modified organisms (GMO's).

A new spray carnation cultivar 'Leo' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science in 2003. A cross was made between spray cultivar 'Ballantyne' and 'West peachy' in 1999. After investigation of the characteristics four years (from 2001 to 2003), it was finally selected in 2003. 'Leo' is a spray cultivar with light yellow color for a cut flower. The main characteristics are multi branching, long vase life and early flowering habit than 'Diamond'(control). It has medium resistance to Fusarium wilt and 9 days vase life.

To prevent salt accumulation in cut-flower rose soil through proper nutrient management, the optimum concentration of nitrogen and potassium for fertigation was investigated. For the purpose, 'Noblesse' cut-flower roses was transplanted to a sandy loam soil in a plastic house and four nutrient levels (0, 25, 50 and $100mg\;l^{-1}$) of N and K separately were applied by drip-irrigation under -20 kPa of soil moisture tension. The growth and yield responses were assessed in terms of the length, weight and number of cut-flower roses, and the nutrient availability absorbed by plant. The length of cut-flowers was not affected by N concentration, but the weight and number of cut-flowers were greatest at $50mg\;N\;l^{-1}$. For K, the length and weight of cut-flowers were greatest at 25 and $50mg\;l^{-1}$, but the number of cut-flowers were remarkably great at $50mg\;l^{-1}$. Despite of increase of N and K fertigation concentration ranged from 25 to $100mg\;l^{-1}$, there was not significant difference between the uptake concentration of plant parts. As a result, the availability of N and K in $50mg\;l^{-1}$ fertigation was highest when compared to other fertigation concentrations, while the remaining amounts of N and K to soil was very low. The results of this study suggested that N and K concentrations of $50mg\;l^{-1}$ would be adequate for the fertigation of 'Noblesse' cut-flower rose.
This study was conducted under the condition of greenhouse to investigate the relationships between the period of long day (LD) treatment before short day treatment, the dry matter production and flower quality of cut chrysanthemum (Indicum group) cv. Reagan Improved at Wagenigen University in the Netherlands. Rooted cuttings of chrysanthemum (Indicum group) cv. Reagan Improved were transplanted on 6th, 13th, loth of September and all of them were treated with short-days (SD) on 21th September. The periods from planting until final harvest were 70, 77, 84 days after being planted for 1, 2, and 3 week-LD period, respectively. The time of flower initiation was similar in all treatments. The number of flowers per plant was greater in the plot of 3 week-LD period than that in the plot of 1 or 2 week-LD period. The fresh weight and dry weight of flowers also increased more in the plot of 3 week-LD period than that in the 1 week-LD period by 4g and 0.4g, respectively. The final dry matter production ($g{\cdot}m$^{-2}$ ) was greater in the treatment of 3 week-LD period than 1 or 2week-LD period. In this study, LD period before short day treatment did not affect the time of flower initiation and flower quality. As a result, 3 week-LD period before short day treatment was strongly recommanded for producing high quality cut flowers of greenhouse-grown chrysanthemum.
This study was conducted to investigate the facilities, cultivation, postharvest management, and distribution status of 27 cut chrysanthemum farms in Korea. The 60% of farms have cultivated the cut chrysanthemum using soil fertigation system in the PE plastic house. In Jeonnam and Busan provinces, Standard type of chrysanthemum was cultivated mainly than spray type of chrysanthemumJeoas. Most farms have been producing the rooted cuttings by plug system using cuttings self-propagated or purchased from the company, but farms in Jeonnam have been planting cuttings directly on cultivation bed. And the 66.6% of cut chrysanthemum farms have been pretreating with dipping in hot water or tap water after harvesting. Precooling was not performed on 70.4% of the farms, and precooling farms have been mainly conducted at temperature of $2-4^{\circ}C$. After harvesting, 70.4% of the farms stored the cut flowers at $2-4^{\circ}C$ for more than 48 hours to control the distribution volume. Cut chrysanthemum was graded mainly by individuals before distribution, and some export farmers have been conducting the cooperative grading. In distribution, all farms have distributed the cut flowers to the domestic markets, and 44.4% of these farms have been also exporting. The 63.0% of farms distributed to domestic market have been trading with flower auction sites.
This study was conducted to investigate optimal harvesting stage and the effects on cut roses of Korean cultivar harvested at different stages. Cut roses are harvested at three different flowering stages. The optimal harvesting stage of cut roses was different depending on varieties. The vase life of standard type 'Pink Song' and spray type 'Peace One' was extended when they were harvested in one and three stages, respectively. The vase life was generally increased when the cut roses were pretreated with a solution containing 2% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ aluminum sulfate + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$Mg(NO_3)_2$ + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$CaCl_2$ as compared to the control regardless of the harvesting stage. And this pretreatment solution improved the flower quality of cut roses bred in Korea. But the effects of pretreatment were varied depending on the harvesting stage.

This study was carried out to research the effect of nutrient composition and GA4+7 on growth, flower quality and bulb development in special hydroponics of cut tulip. Flowering of 'Cassini' was markedly accelerated by standard+GA4+7, K200+GA4+7, N250+GA4+7 treatment, last internode was increased by N250 as compared with other treatment. For 'Christmas Marvel', flowering was promoted by K250+GA4+7, last infernode and total length were also increased with K250+GA4+7 as compared to other treatment. For 'Golden Apeldoorn', flowering was accelerated by K200+GA4+7, last internode was increased with N300+GA4+7 treatment and total length was increased in N250+GA4+7 treatment as compared with the standard plants. Bulb weight and number of 'Cassini', 'Christmas Marvel'and 'Golden Apeldoorn' were decreased by GA4+7 as compared to non-treatment, and bulb diameter was not affected by GA4+7.
