  • Direct teaching of the industrial robot is a novel technique to easily teach manipulators. However, teaching data by human hand cannot help having large noise errors ranging from low to high frequency. To use teaching data, post-processing to correct the teaching trajectory is required. Here, a novel shape-based trajectory correction method to rebuild teaching data with the feature information of curvature and velocity is proposed. The proposed method is tested on square and circular objects.

  • In the industry, three-dimensional coloring has been needed for realistic prototype from rapid prototyping. Z-corporation developed a 3D printer which provides three-dimensional colored prototype. However, the existing process cannot be adopted to models from other rapid prototyping process. In addition, time and cost for manufacturing colored prototype still remain to be improved. In this study, a new coloring process using ink-jet head is proposed for color printing on three-dimensional prototype surface. Process parameters such as the angle and the distance between ink-jet nozzle and the three-dimensional surface should be investigated from experiments. The correction matrix according to sloped angle to minimize the distortion of 2D image was proposed by analysis of printing error. Therefore, approximated method for angle and discrete length according to the radius of curvature for printing on the curved surface was proposed. By printing image on the doubly curved surface, the method was verified. As a practical example, helmet was chosen for printing images on the curved surface. The character images were applied with approximated method for angle and discrete length and was printed on the helmet surface.

  • Many longitudinally-arranged pipes in ships are equipped with loops as a measure to reduce stresses caused by displacement loads conveyed from the hull girder bending and/or thermal loads of carried fluid of non-ambient temperature. But as the loops have some negative effects such as causing extra manufacturing cost and occupying extra space, the number and the dimensions of the loops need to be minimized. In the meanwhile, a design formula for pipe loops has been developed by modeling them as a spring element of which stresses and axial stiffness are calculated based on the beam theory. But as the beam theory turns out to be inappropriate to deal with the complex structural behavior in the curved corner portion of the loop, this paper aims at improving the previously developed design formula by adopting correction factors which can allow for the gap between the results of beam theory and a more accurate analysis. This paper adopts a finite element analysis with two-dimensional shell elements with some validation work for it. The paper ends with a sample application of the proposed formulas showing their accuracy and efficiency.

  • The significance of the curvature dependency correction of surface tension is studied in calculating the pore volume distribution of porous adsorbent from nitrogen adsorption isotherm. That is, Kelvin radii are calculated with curvature dependent surface tension values calculated by Chang et al, and then with these Kelvin radii, pore volume distributions of three porous adsorbents, silica alumina (steam deactivated), silica gel (Davidson 59), and silica gel (Mallinc-krodt Standard Luminescent), are calculated. The results are compared with those obtained by the previous method in which surface tension is taken as constant and also with the others. obtained by the modelless method proposed by Brunauer et al. The maximum point of the distribution curve shift to the larger pore radius, when the curvature dependency is considered. Furthermore, the relative pressure at which capillary condensation commences is by far the lower than that accepted previously. This effect becomes significant as the pore radius approaches to the micropore range.

  • Objective: To investigate the physical appearance and therapeutic changes that occur with the performance of Schroth exercise in patients with scoliosis. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Fifteen subjects with maximum curvature of the lumbar who were diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis had volunteered to participate in the study. Eight subjects were included in the experimental group where they performed the Schroth Therapeutic Exercise and the other seven were included in the control group. The experimental group underwent 2 hours of weekly treatment for 12 weeks, while the control group did not during the same period based on the decisions of patients or guardians. The Mann-Whitney rank test was carried out to compare the treatment results of the two groups, and the comparison within the group was done by Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The vertebral rotation angle (VRA) was by Scoliometer, and difference of rotated and curved portion volume (DV) between both sides on the major curvature portion measured by 3D human body scanning system. Results: In the experimental group, 12 weeks of Schroth exercise therapy has significant improved in correction rate (CR) in Cobb's angle (CA), VRA, and DV between both sides on the major curvature portion (p<0.05), while significant differences were not found between the groups regarding weight bearing difference in both feet (WD) and DV (p<0.05). Conclusions: Schroth exercise performance showed significant changes in the patient's therapeutic changes (CA, VRA), but the physical appearance (DV, WD) was not significant, indicating that external changes in the treatment goal setting are more difficult goals to achieve.

  • As the radius of curvature of curved optical waveguide gets smaller, the loss increases at the junction of linear-curved waveguide by the cross sectional mode mismatch. The concept of lateral offset has been used widely to minimize it, and simple method of maximum matching has been efficient for most cases of silica waveguide with low optical confinement and large radius of curvature. Here, we analyzed that the propagation mode characteristics of the lateral offset and propagation mode characteristics of general case with effective index method and Airy function solution. As the normalized frequency varies, mode characteristics changes near the boundary of 1/V=0.7 and the simple matching of gaussian profile might give -35% of error at most. We proposed improved method with a new correction factor to improve the mode mismatch problem of conventional methods for general cases, and showed the convenience and feasibility of this method for the calculation of the lateral offset.

  • A numerical technique is developed for the solution of fully developed turbulent recirculating flow in the passage of variable area using the non-orthogonal coordinate transformation. In the numerical analysis, primitive pressure-velocity finite difference equations were solved by SIMPLER algorithm with 2-equation turbulence model and algebraic stress model (ASM). QUICK scheme on the differencing of convective terms which is free from the inaccuracies of numerical diffusion has been applied to the variable grids and the results compared with those from HYBRID scheme. In order to test the effect of streamline curvatures on turbulent diffusion Lee and Choi streamline curvature correction model which has been obtained by modifying the Leschziner and Rodi's model is testes. The ASM was also employed and the results are compared to those from another turbulence model. The results show that difference of convective differencing schemes and turbulence models give significant differences in the prediction of velocity fields in the expansion region and outlet region of the combustor, however show little differences in the parallel flow region.

  • In this study, the concept and techniques to generate the level lA, lB and 2A image products have been reviewed. In particular, radiometric and geometric corrections and bands registration used to generate level lA, lB and 2A products have been focused in this study. Radiometric correction is performed to take into account radiometric gain and offset calculated by compensating the detector response non-uniformity. And, in order to compensate satellite altitude, attitude, skew effects, earth rotation and earth curvature, some geometric parameters for geometric corrections are computed and applied. Bands registration process using the matching function between a geometry, which is called 'reference geometry', and another one which is corresponds to the image to be registered is applied to images in case of multi-spectral imaging mode. In order to generate level-lA image products, a simple radiometric processing is applied to a level-0 image. Level-lB image has the same radiometry correction as a level-lA image, but is also issued from some geometric corrections in order to compensate skew effects, Earth rotation effects and spectral misregistration. Level-2A image is generated using some geo-referencing parameters computed by ephemeris data, orbit attitudes and sensor angles. Level lA image is tested by visual analysis. The difference between distances calculated level 1 B image and distances of real coordinate is tested. Level 2A image is tested Using checking points.

  • Surface deflections have a great effect on the external appearance of automobiles. Usually, they are occurred on large flat panels containing sudden shape changes and of very small size about $\pm$30$\sim$300$\mu$m. Since the current numerical method is not sufficient for predicting these defects, the correction of these defects still depends on trial and error, which requires a great deal of time and expense. Consequently, developing the numerical method to predict and prevent these defects is very important far improving cosmetic surface qualities. In this study, an evaluation system that can analyze surface deflections using numerical simulation and a visualization system are reported. To calculate the surface deflections numerically, robust algorithms and simulation methodologies are suggested and to visualize them quantitatively, the curvature variation algorithm is proposed. To verify the developed systems, the experimental die of the handle portion of exterior door is analyzed. The results showed that the experimental and simulational visualization are in good agreement. Compensation methods to correct the surface deflections are also tested. The evaluation system proposed in this paper could be used to predict and minimize the occurrence of surface deflections in die manufacturing.
