Development of ZnO Varistor for Distribution Surge Arrester (18kV, 5kA) (배전급 피뢰기(18kV, 5kA)용 ZnO 바리스터 소자 개발)

  • ZnO varistors for distribution surge arrester (18kV, 5kA) were developed and tested microstructure and electrical characteristics. Microstructure of ZnO varistor was consisted of ZnO grain, spinel phase and Bi-rich phase. Average grain size of ZnO varistor was $\mu\textrm{m}$ Reference voltage and lightning impulse residual voltage of ZnO varistor exhibited a good haracteristics above 5.5kV and below 11.56kV, respectively. Consequently, discharge capacity which is the most important characteristics of ZnO varistor for surge arrester exhibited excellent properties above 70kA at twice high-current impulse test. Moreover, variation rate of reference voltage and lightning impulse residual voltage showed below 5% and 2% after high-current impulse test, respectively. Leakage current and watt loss of ZnO varistor will not increase during accelerated aging test at stress condition, such as 3.213kV/$115^{\circ}C$/1000h.

  • Through USN field Test Projects launched in 2005, 9 USN application service models such as u-Ocean, u-Construction, u-Farm, u-Hospital has been deployed. We conducted technical, industrial, economical feasibility tests to verify those services. This thesis will cover briefly the current situation of USN industry domestically and internationally. It will show the future prospect of convergence service model based on USN in conjunction with research details and results from previous USN field Test Projects.

  • A new specification-based analog and mixed-signal test technique using high performance current sensors is proposed. The proposed technique using current sensors built in external ATE has little hardware overhead in circuit under test and high testability without time consuming operation of test point placement algorithm.

  • This paper analyze the operating characteristic of RCB due to the synthesize harmonic current. The RCB of rated sensitivity electric current with 30[mA] test to operating characteristic by synthesize harmonic current and it analyzed the tripping operation due to a harmonic current. The test result, the operating current of RCB changed by synthesize harmonic current.

  • The detection mechanism of the flaw for the nondestructive testing using eddy current is related to the interaction of the induced eddy currents in the test specimen with flaws and the coupling of these interaction effects with the moving test probe. In this study, the two-dimensional electromagnetic finite element analysis(FEM) fur the eddy current signals of the aluminum plate with different depth of surface cracks is described and the comparison is also made between experimental and predicted signals analyzed by FEM. In addition, the characteristics of attenuation of the eddy current density due to the variation of the depth of a conductor are evaluated. The effective parameters for the application of eddy current technique to evaluate surface cracks are discussed by analyzing the characteristics of the eddy current signals due to the variation of crack depths.

  • As high temperature superconductor applications became a reality due to increase in coated conductor performance, it is important to understand their stability behavior to design safe electrical power systems. Coated conductors can be stabilized with different metals and alloys for different types of application, to yield excellent electrical, thermal and mechanical performance. We have experimentally studied the dependence of quench and recovery characteristics of stainless steel stabilized coated conductors on the amplitude of current and duration time. Stability test of 3cm long sample were performed in a liquid nitrogen bath cooling condition by applying a short period over current pulses for 50 and 100ms, with amplitude up to ~6 times the critical current. The transport current that flows before and after the current pulse was fixed at about ~80-85% critical current. We analyzed the quench and recovery phenomena of the test sample using the current voltage characteristic.

Fault Current Limitation Characteristics of the Bi-2212 Bulk Coil for Distribution-class Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (배전급 초전도 한류기 개발을 위한 Bi-2212 초전도 한류소자의 사고전류 제한 특성)

  • We investigated fault current limitation characteristics of the resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) which consisted of a Bi-2212 bulk coil and a shunt coil. The Bi-2212 bulk coil and the shunt coil were connected in parallel. The Bi-2212 bulk coil was placed inside the shunt coil to induce field-assisted quench. The fault test was conducted at an input voltage of $200V_{rms}$ and fault current of $12kA_{rms}\;and\;25kA_{rms}$. The fault conditions were asymmetric and symmetric, and the fault period was 5 cycles. The test results show that the SFCL successfully limited the fault current of $12kA_{rms}\;and\;25kA_{rms}$ to below $5.5{\sim}6.9kA_{peak}\;within\;0.64{\sim}2.17$ msec after the fault occurred. Limitation was faster under symmetric fault test condition due to the larger change rate of current. We concluded that the speed of fault current limitation was determined by the speed of current rise rather than the amplitude of a short circuit current. These results show that the Bi-2212 bulk coil is suitable for distribution-class SFCLS.

The Field Test of a Mitigation Method from DC Subwaysystem for Underground Pipeline

  • The owner of underground metallic structures (gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) has a burden of responsibility for the corrosion protection in order to prevent big accidents like gas explosion, soil pollution, leakage and so on. So far, Cathodic Protection(CP) technology have been implemented for protection of underground systems. The stray current from DC subway system in Korea has affected the cathodic protection (CP) design of the buried pipelines adjacent to the railroads. In this aspect, KERI has developed a various mitigation method, drainage system through steel bar under the rail, a stray current gathering mesh system, insulation method between yard and main line, distributed ICCP(Impressed Current Cathodic System), High speed response rectifier, restrictive drainage system, Boding ICCP system. We installed the mitigation system at the real field and test of its efficiency in Busan and Seoul, Korea. In this paper, the results of field test, especially, distributed ICCP are described.

  • This study presents an analysis technique that can consider all variables which are needed in the design of short circuit current capability of electrical contacts. Required variables in the design are material of contact, contacting area, applied force, asperity of surface, current and so on. Short circuit current capability test was carried out for the interrelation of design variables and the verification of analysis technique. Temperature rise equation of the contacts was obtained from the test results, and also, a standard that is criterion of the occurrence availability of melting or spot of contact surface from test results was established.

  • This paper deals with the electric and thermal characteristics of the composite busbar composed of aluminum and copper. When AC current is flowing in Cu busbar used widely in conservative equipments like power cable, transformer, and switchgear & controlgear most current is concentrated on the surface of the busbar by the skin effect. Therefore, if the Cu region in the busbar having low current density is replaced with aluminum, we can largely reduce the product cost and weight of the busbar. To conform the performance of the composite busbar, we designed and fabricated a test Al/Cu composite busbar. Maximun temperature rise of the busbar was $35^{\circ}C$ when 1600 Arms of AC current was applied to the test composite busbar($120mm{\times}10mm$). Based on test results, we can expect to make the low-priced and light power equipments using the Al/Cu composite busbar.
