  • We study X-ray characteristics of shocked ambient gas of the Galactic core-collapse supernova remnant Cas A. Using 1 Msec observation with Chandra X-ray Observatory, we identify thermal emissions from the shocked ambient gas along the outer boundary of the remnant. Our results show that Cas A is expanding into a circumstellar wind with a wind density n ~ 1 $cm^{-3}$ at the current outer radius of the remnant (~ 3 pc). We suggest that the progenitor star of Cas A, which exploded as a Type~IIb SN, had an initial mass ~16 Msun, and have lost ~10 Msun as a RSG wind. We discuss the implications of our results for the mass loss of massive stars and the resulting supernova type.

  • The fresh water and sea water in present ships is used as cooling water for marine engine. Therefore, corrosion damage in seawater system is frequently occurred. In particular, in the impeller of pump, the performance and material span due to the corrosion and cavitation erosion has adverse effects. Most of the pump impellers in vessels are used Cu-Al alloy. Cu-Al alloy which having the excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance is widely used in marine environments. However, despite the excellent characteristics, the periodic replacement parts due to the cavitation damage in seawater is vulnerable to economic viewpoint. In this study, Cu-Al alloy used with impeller for centrifugal pump were conducted various experiments to evaluate its characteristics in seawater and fresh water solutions. As an electrochemical result, the dynamic conditions that exposed to the cavitation environment presented high corrosion current density with collapse of the cavity compared with the static conditions. Cavitation test results, the weightloss and weightloss rate in fresh water are observed more than those of seawater.

  • It is noted that the disaster such as fire, explosion, collapse has been rapidly increased caused by strength deterioration of steel structures at petrochemical plant during fire. In this regard, it is stressed out that the legal requirement for fire proofing for steel structures at petrochemical plant should be carefully reviewed since the current legal requirement such as Industrial Safety & Health Law, Architectural Law has a conflict and different way of approach. In addition, it is our point of view that the present law should be revised to consolidate into single law including engineering design criteria to reflect unreasonable legal requirement. It is further our point of view that the performance certificate for fire proofing like UL-1709, basis of maintenance should be appropriately and reasonably provided in line with global practice.

  • A new oscillator configuration is presented and tested for Josephson voltage standard operated at the cryogenic(4.2K) temperature. Features of active devices are investigated in aspects of 1/f noise, output power, and current collapse at low temperature. The output power of oscillator is optimized by a nonlinear design approach called Harmonic Two Signal Method(HTSM). The embedding newworks of the generalized six oscillators with tow loads are derived. A HEMT oscilliator is designed in X-Band for the Josephson voltage standard and tested at room and cryogenic(4.2K) temperatures. Oscillation frequency, output power, C/N ratio, and fequency stability are compared at room and low temperatures.

  • Astronomical observations strongly suggest that the expansion rate of our universe is currently under acceleration. The nature of the so-called dark energy causing the acceleration is unknown, and it is one of the fundamental mysteries in the present day theoretical cosmology. Here we briefly review the current state of cosmic dark energy research in both theoretical and observational sides. Constraints on dynamical dark energy models (e.g., w-fluid, quintessence, and modified gravity) with recent observational data from type Ia supernovae, cosmic microwave background radiation, and large-scale structures in the universe indicate a preferred direction toward the simplest ${\Lambda}$CDM world model. We also discuss some issues regarding the early dark energy model and the spherical collapse of matter in the presence of dark energy.

  • The number of cases of collapsed plastic greenhouses in farmlands has increased due to the heavy local snowfall caused by extraordinary atmospheric phenomena. Consequently, the economic losses of farmers have also increased. However the government policy in relation to damage pretension is insufficient and collapse case is repeated every year. The main reason for frame collapse is that the moment capacity of a steel pipe is not sufficient to resist a heavy snowload. In this study, experiments were conducted on the current frame system of a greenhouse with a tension tie. The frame consisted of two sections(${\phi}25.4{\times}1.5$, ${\phi}31.8{\times}1.5$), and its span length was 6.5 m. A temporary tension tie using a steel wire and a fabric rope was connected to the two joints, to which a curved beam and a straight column were connected. The pretension force was applied at the tension tie, and a vertical force simulating snowfall was applied until failure. The fabric rope frame increased the load-carrying capacity by 10-45% compared to the normal frame without a tension tie, and the steel wire frame increased the load-carrying capacity by 58-73% compared to the normal frame without a tension tie. Steel wire was found to be more effective as far as strength is concerned, but its connection details and pretension application are more difficult and complicated than those of the fabric rope. The test results thus show that the fabric rope is more preferable.

  • This paper presents a highly linear power amplifier MMIC, having an output power level of about 1 watt, based on InGaP/GaAs hetero-junction bipolar transistor(HBT) technology for the 900 MHz band. The active bias circuit is applied to minimize the effect of temperature variation. Ballast resistors are optimized to prevent a current collapse and a thermal runaway. The fabricated power amplifier exhibited a gain of 17.6 dB, an output P1dB of 30 dBm, and a PAE of 44.9 % at an output P1dB from the one-tone excitation. It also showed a very high OIP3 of 47.3 dBm at an average output power of 20 dBm from the two-tone excitation.

  • The goal of this study is to develop an effective control system for cardiac output regulation based upon the preload and afterload conditions without any transducers and compliance chambers in the moving actuator type total artificial heart. Motor current waveforms during the actuator movement are used as an input to the automatic control algorithm. While the current waveform analysis is performed, the stroke length and velocity of the actuator are gradually increased up to the maximum pump output level. If the diastolic filling rate of either right or left pump begins to exceed the venous return, atrial collapse will occur. Since the diastolic suction acts as a load to the motor, this critical condition can be detected by analyzing the motor current waveforms. Every time this detection criterion is met, the control algorithm decreases the stroke velocity and length of the actuator step by step just below the critical detection level. Then, they start to increase. In this way the maximum pump output under given venous return can be achieved. Additionally the control algorithm provides some degree of afterload sensitivity. If the aortic pressure is detected to exceed 120 mmHg, the stroke length and velocity decrease in the same way as the response to the preload. Left-right pump output balance is maintained by proper adjustment of the asymmetry of the stroke angle. In the mock circulatory test, this control system worked well and there was a considerable range of stroke volume difference with adjustment of the asymmetry value. Two ovine experiments were performed. It was confirmed that the required cardiac output regulation according to the venous return could be achieved with adequate detection of diastolic function, at least in the in vivo short-term survival cases[2-3 days . We conclude that this control algorithm is a promising method to regulate cardiac output in the moving actuator type total artificial heart.

  • Objectives: In the current early phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, Bali needs to prepare to face the escalation of cases, with a particular focus on the readiness of healthcare services. We simulated the future trajectory of the epidemic under current conditions, projected the impact of policy interventions, and analyzed the implications for healthcare capacity. Methods: Our study was based on the first month of publicly accessible data on new confirmed daily cases. A susceptible, exposed, infected, recovered (SEIR) model for COVID-19 was employed to compare the current dynamics of the disease with those predicted under various scenarios. Results: The fitted model for the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Bali indicated an effective reproduction number of 1.4. Interventions have decreased the possible maximum number of cases from 71 125 on day 86 to 22 340 on day 119, and have prolonged the doubling time from about 9 days to 21 days. This corresponds to an approximately 30% reduction in transmissions from cases of mild infections. There will be 2780 available hospital beds, and at the peak (on day 132), the number of severe cases is estimated to be roughly 6105. Of these cases, 1831 will need intensive care unit (ICU) beds, whereas the number of currently available ICU beds is roughly 446. Conclusions: The healthcare system in Bali is in danger of collapse; thus, serious efforts are needed to improve COVID-19 interventions and to prepare the healthcare system in Bali to the greatest extent possible.
