Twindemic Threats of Weeds Coinfected with Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus as Viral Reservoirs in Tomato Greenhouses

  • Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) are well-known examples of the begomovirus and orthotospovirus genera, respectively. These viruses cause significant economic damage to tomato crops worldwide. Weeds play an important role in the ongoing presence and spread of several plant viruses, such as TYLCV and TSWV, and are recognized as reservoirs for these infections. This work applies a comprehensive approach, encompassing field surveys and molecular techniques, to acquire an in-depth understanding of the interactions between viruses and their weed hosts. A total of 60 tomato samples exhibiting typical symptoms of TYLCV and TSWV were collected from a tomato greenhouse farm in Nonsan, South Korea. In addition, 130 samples of 16 different weed species in the immediate surroundings of the greenhouse were collected for viral detection. PCR and reverse transcription-PCR methodologies and specific primers for TYLCV and TSWV were used, which showed that 15 tomato samples were coinfected by both viruses. Interestingly, both viruses were also detected in perennial weeds, such as Rumex crispus, which highlights their function as viral reservoirs. Our study provides significant insights into the co-occurrence of TYLCV and TSWV in weed reservoirs, and their subsequent transmission under tomato greenhouse conditions. This project builds long-term strategies for integrated pest management to prevent and manage simultaneous virus outbreaks, known as twindemics, in agricultural systems.

Effect of Hamstring Eccentric Exercise on Pain and Functional Activity in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of hamstring eccentric exercise on pain and functional activity in patients with chronic low back pain. Design: Randomized controlled trial Methods: Participants comprised 27 subjects with back pain persisting for 3 months. They were randomly assigned to the experimental group (Eccentric exercise: n=13) and the control group (Stretching: n=14). The experimental group performed gastrocnemius, iliopsoas, and quadratus lumborum stretching along with hamstring eccentric exercise, while the control group engaged in the same stretches along with hamstring stretching. The eccentric exercise for the hamstrings was Nordic curl exercise. Each group practiced for 1 hour a day, 3 times a week, for 4 weeks. Pain, disability index, balance, and hamstring length were measured. Results: Significant differences were observed in the comparison of changes in back pain, back disability index, and hamstring length before and after exercise within each group (p<0.05). The balance ability of the experimental group showed a difference before and after exercise (p<0.05), whereas no significant difference in the control group. There were no significant differences in back pain and hamstring length between the groups. Changes in back disability index and balance ability significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Hamstring eccentric exercise using Nordic curls has a positive effect on back pain, back disability index, balance ability, and hamstring length changes.

Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Surface Winds over the Adjacent Seas of the Korean Peninsula (한국 주변해역에서의 해상풍의 시공간적 특성)

  • The temporal and spatial characteristics of wind fields over the neighbouring seas of the Korean peninsula are investigated using 10-years daily wind data during 1978${\sim}$1987 which have been spatially smoothed and low-pass filtered. Long term annual and monthly means are examined for synoptic patterns and spectral analyses are made for temporal variability and spatial coherence. Spatial patterns of the annual mean wind stress and curl have a strong resemblance with those of monthly means during the winter season. Two outstanding periodicities are observed at 1 and 2 cycles per year. The synoptic winds over the study area are highly coherent at both the annual and semi-annual periodicities. However, each basin has its own characteristic spatial pattern. For instance, the prevailing wind during the winter season is northerIy over the northern East Sea (ES), Yellow Sea (YS), and northern East China Sea (ECS), while it is northwesterly over the southern ES and northesterly over the northern ES and southern ECS. At the same time, the wind stress curl is positive over the northern ES and southern ECS, while it is negative over the southern ES, YS and northern ECS. On the other hand, the wind field during the summer season, with its strength being much reduced, is completely different from that during the winter season, and frequent passage of tropical storms provokes large temporal variability over ECS. One remarkable point is that the annual cycle, dominated by the Siberian High, tends to propagate from northeast to southwest, i.e., from northern 25 toward southern ES, YS and ECS, while the semi-annual cycle propagates in the opposite direction, from southwest to northeast. The semi-annual periodicity may reflect development of extratropical cyclones in spring and fall which frequently cross the Korean peninsula. In higher frequencies, there are no dominant periodicities, but local winds over YS and ES are highly correlated for frequencies larger than 0.1 cycles per day and phase difference increases linearly with frequency. This linear increase of phase corresponds to phase speed of 550 and 730 km/d at 0.1 and 0.3 cpd, respectively, The phase speed is apparently coincident with moving speed of extratropical cyclones across the Korean peninsula in the west-east direction.

Efficacy of Three Antiviral Agents and Resistant Cultivars on Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus in Tomato (토마토황화잎말림바이러스병에 대한 저항성 품종과 항바이러스 활성 물질 3종의 효과 검증)

  • Recently, several in vitro studies have reported antiviral activity of agents of systemic acquired resistance against plant virus infection, but the approach has not been applied in a wide range of agricultural fields. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory effect of the exogenous application of salicylic acid (SA), chitosan (CH), or eugenol (EG) in tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) infection of greenhouse-grown tomato plants. In vitro, the initial time of symptom was observed in TYLCV-infected plants (VP) of the resistant cultivar 'Superdotaerang' at 12 days post inoculation (dpi) after application of antiviral agents. At 32 dpi, the disease rate of TYLCV in the CHT+VP (0.1% chitosan and virus infected control) treated plants was 87.5%, lower than that of the other treatment. However, the virus content in the CHT+VP treated plants was higher than those of the other treatments, and SA, EG, and CH did not show significant effect on plant height or shoot and root fresh weight. Our results from summer-cultivated greenhouse-grown tomatoes show that none of the tested agents had an inhibitory activity on viral infection or yield of tomato 'Dotaerangsola'cultivar. In contrast, all treated 'TY Giants' cultivars that possessed TYLCV resistance genes Ty-1 and Ty-3a did not show typical symptoms and the virus content was remarkably lower than those in the TYLCV treated plants in 'Superdotaerang'. The results of this research indicated that the planting of resistant tomato cultivars was effective method instead of using SA, EG, and CH (known as resistance-inducing factors for control) of TYLCV in the field.

  • The springback characteristics of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet was investigated in OSU draw/bend test. Springback is the elastically-driven change of shape of a part after forming and it should be estimated and controlled to manufacture more precise products in sheet forming. The demands are increasing for magnesium alloy sheet press forming, but the study on its springback characteristics is insufficient. Strip draw/bend tests were conducted with various conditions - die radius, sheet thickness and controlled tensile force. The springback angles were measured from 'sidewall curl' of deformed shape. The tendency of springback angle was observed from the tests.

  • Some sections of concrete highway pavements have been viewed with great concern by highway officials and engineers due to the severe cracking and failure problems. This is mainly due to the traffic loads in addition to temperature variations between top and bottom of concrete slab, which cause the concrete slab to curl up and down depending on the thermal gradient, respectively. Subsequently, a major consideration was given to the derivation of stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal loads due to the uniform gravity load, temperature and shrinkage of concrete. And the structural behavior of concrete highway pavement due to the temperature variations throughout the nations has been emphasized.

Analysis of the full tension levelling Process using sequential unit models Is carried out for steel strips with the shape defect and provides the effect of the intermesh and optimum amount of the intermesh in tension levelling process.

  • In [Z. Cai and B. C. Shin, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 40 (2002), 307-318], we developed the discrete first-order system least squares method for the second-order elliptic boundary value problem by directly approximating $H(div){\cap}H(curl)-type$ space based on the Helmholtz decomposition. Under general assumptions, error estimates were established in the $L^2\;and\;H^1$ norms for the vector and scalar variables, respectively. Such error estimates are optimal with respect to the required regularity of the solution. In this paper, we study solution methods for solving the system of linear equations arising from the discretization of variational formulation which possesses discrete biharmonic term and focus on numerical results including the performances of multigrid preconditioners and the finite element accuracy.

  • This paper develops a least-squares approach to the solution of the optimal control problem for the Navier-Stokes equations. We recast the optimality system as a first-order system by introducing velocity-flux variables and associated curl and trace equations. We show that a least-squares principle based on $L^2$ norms applied to this system yields optimal discretization error estimates in the $H^1$ norm in each variable.

  • For the factory automation and unmanned machine operation, it is very important to manufacture highly reliable and efficient chip breakers for optimal chip control. In this research, using the CALMA CAD/CAM SYSTEM, the manufacturing process of 3-dimensional chip breakers is established. Using the results of the cutting test of the selected chip breakers with double-step grooves, the chip breaking mechanism is schematically analysed. An expression for the chip breaking relation is derived which considers chip material behavior following LUDWIK's stress-strain curve, chip breaking criterion and the shape of chip breakers. This contains the thickness of chip, the radius of chip curl, and the mechanical properties of chip materials. It is found that the expression agrees very closely with the experimental results.
