  • A study was conducted to improve the adhesion of propellant, liner, and insulation. Insulation was shown to be more advantageous in improving the adhesion when a barrier coat was applied compared to a bare insulation layer. It was confirmed that the adhesion strength between the insulation and the propellant improves as the thickness of the liner coating increases. The liner was cured for 24 h. If the liner is cured for a long time, it will adversely affect adhesion. Adhesion is also improved when a bonding agent is applied. As the bonding agent content increases, the adhesion improves. There is a change in the adhesive strength depending on the type of bonding agent used. HX-868 shows slightly more improved adhesion than HX-752.

  • Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium found in powdered infant formula and is fatal to neonates. Antibiotic resistance has emerged owing to overuse of antibiotics. Therefore, demand for high-yield bacteriophages as an alternative to antibiotics has increased. Accordingly, we developed a modified mass-production method for bacteriophages by introducing a two-stage self-cycling (TSSC) process, which yielded high-concentration bacteriophage solutions by replenishing the nutritional medium at the beginning of each process, without additional challenge. pH of the culture medium was monitored in real-time during C. sakazakii growth and bacteriophage CS01 propagation, and the changes in various parameters were assessed. The pH of the culture medium dropped to 5.8 when the host bacteria reached the early log phase (OD540 = 0.3). After challenge, it decreased to 4.65 and then recovered to 4.94; therefore, we set the optimum pH to challenge the phage at 5.8 and that to harvest the phage at 4.94. We then compared phage production during the TSSC process in jar-type bioreactors and the batch culture process in shaker flasks. In the same volume of LB medium, the concentration of the phage titer solution obtained with the TSSC process was 24 times higher than that obtained with the batch culture process. Moreover, we stably obtained high concentrations of bacteriophage solutions for three cycles with the TSSC process. Overall, this modified TSSC process could simplify large-scale production of bacteriophage CS01 and reduce the unit cost of phage titer solution. These results could contribute to curing infants infected with antibiotic-resistant C. sakazakii.

  • Transparent, photocatalytic, and self-cleaning TiO2 thin film is developed by TiO2 sol-gel coating on glass and polycarbonate (PC) substrates. Acetyl acetone (AcAc) suppresses the precipitation of TiO2 by forming a yellowish (complex) transparent sol-gel. XPS analysis confirms the presence of Ti2p and O1s in the thin films on glass and PC substrates. The TiO2-sol is prepared by stabilizing titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) with diethylamine and methyl alcohol. The addition of AcAcsilane coupling solution to the TiO2-sol instantaneously turns to yellowish color owing to the complexing of titanium with AcAc. The AcAc solution substantially improves the photocatalytic property of the TiO2 coating layer in MB solutions. The coated TiO2 film exhibits super hydrophilicity without and with light irradiation. The TiO2 thin film stabilized by adding 8.7 wt% AcAc shows the highest photo-degradation for methylene blue (MB) solution under UV light irradiation. Also, the optimum photocatalytic activity is obtained for the 8.7 wt% AcAc-stabilized TiO2 coating layer calcined at 450 ℃. The thin-films on glass exhibit fast self-cleaning from oleic acid contamination within 45 min of UV-light irradiation. The appropriate curing time at 140 ℃ improves the anti-fogging and thermal stability of the TiO2 film coated on PC substrate. The watermark-free PC substrate is particularly beneficial to combat fogging problems of transparent substrates.

  • Soang excavates the idea of equality in our national indigenous thoughts and the theoretical structure of threefold egalitarianism in our traditional Confucianism. He also digests diverse Western thoughts and introduces some of them into his theory. At first sight, his theory looks like an assembly of diverse Western thoughts. However, he always justifies it with our traditions. Even if his theory and political position fails in his time, it gives us valuable instructions. First, if the failure of his political center position means an opening road toward Korean division, his political position must be a future guide for the reunification of Korean peninsula. Second, if the bi-polarization is a serious disease of our society, then his view of egalitarianism must be a efficient guide for curing our society. Third, as European Union shows us, the kingly view of world family is a feasible guide for realizing world peace in future.

  • An experimental program was conducted to investigate the fresh properties, mechanical properties and durability characteristics of the self-compacting mortars (SCM) produced with pumice powder and Artificial Lightweight Fine Aggregate (aLWFA). aLWFA was produced by using fly ash. A total of 16 different mixtures were designed with a constant water-binder ratio of 0.37, in which natural sands were partially replaced with aLWFA and pumice powder at different volume fractions of 5%, 10% and 15%. The artificial lightweight aggregates used in this study were manufactured through cold bonding pelletisation of 90% of class-F fly ash and 10% of Portland cement in a tilted pan with an ambient temperature and moisture content. Flowability tests were conducted on the fresh mortar mixtures beforehand, to determine the self-compacting characteristics on the basis of EFNARC. To determine the conformity of the fresh mortar characteristics with the standards, mini-slump and mini-V-funnel tests were carried out. Hardened state tests were conducted after 7, 28 and 56 days to determine the flexural strength and axial compressive strength respectively. Durability, sorptivity, permeability and density tests were conducted at the end of 28 days of curing time. The test results showed that the pumice powder replacement improved both the fresh state and the hardened state characteristics of the mortar and the optimum mixture ratio was determined as 15%, considering other studies in the literature. In the aLWFA mixtures used, the mechanical and durability characteristics of the modified compositions were very close to the control mixture. It is concluded in this study that mixtures with pumice powder replacement eliminated the negative effects of the aLWFA in the mortars and made a positive contribution.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of the application of double layered bubble sheet on the curing of slab and wall concrete placed at the job site in cold weather and to offer a feasibility of Concrete IoT Management System(CIMS), which is wireless sensor network developed by the authors, to manage early age quality of the concrete in terms of temperature, maturity and strength development. Test results indicated that the application of bubble sheet enhances the insulation performance, which results in an increase of the temperature by around 1~20. 6℃. It is found that CIMS can gather the temperature, maturity and strength development data from the sensors embedded from 30 m far from CIMS successfully. Predicted compressive strengths by CIMS had good agreement with measured ones within 2 MPa error level until 7 days. It is thought that the combination of the bubble sheet application for cold weather protection and CIMS for quality management tool in cold weather concreting contributes to shorten the time for the form removal by one day.

  • Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the change in the temperature of the adhesive resin in polycrystalline ceramic brackets irradiated using a diode laser at different irradiation energy levels and times. Materials and Methods: For the measurement of the temperature of the adhesive resin, it was applied at the base of the ceramic bracket, a thermocouple was placed at the center of the base surface, the bracket was placed on prepared resin specimens for light curing, and a laser was irradiated to the center of the bracket slot at 5, 7, and 10 W. For the measurement of the temperatures of the enamel under the bracket and pulp cavity, extracted premolar was fixed to a prepared mold and the ceramic bracket was bonded to the buccal surface of the premolar. The Kruskal-Wallis H test and Friedman test were used for statistical analysis. Result: At 5 W, the temperature of the adhesive resin did not reach the resin softening temperature of 200℃ within 30 seconds. At 7 W, it reached 200℃ when the ceramic bracket was irradiated continuously for 28 seconds. At 10 W, it reached 200℃ when the ceramic bracket was irradiated continuously for 15 seconds. During laser irradiation, the temperature of the enamel under the bracket increased by over 5℃ within 15 seconds. Conclusion: The use of diode laser irradiation for bracket debonding should be carefully considered because the pulp cavity temperature increases by over 5℃ within the irradiation time for resin thermal softening.

  • Recently, the frequency of damage to slopes for highways, railways, and complexes has been increasing according to abnormal climates such as heavy rainfall or snowfall. Rapid Hardening Composite Mat (RHCM) could be a satisfactory alternative because it has the advantages that large-scale earthwork is not essential and the period for restoration is minimized. Also, this method does not require heavy machines and a phase of maintenance for slopes against the shotcrete method or planted slope protection, which are representative slope protection methods. Furthermore, the curing time is shorter than Geosynthetic Concrete Composite Mat (GCCM). Therefore, RHCM could be useful for emergency restoration work. Thus, in this study, the strength and duration of RHCM are estimated, compared, and analyzed with GCCM. As a result of the laboratory test, the strength of RHCM is greater 51%, and the duration is larger 69% than GCCM.

  • This study was performed to investigate the mechanism of the change in compressive strength of autoclave cured geopolymers. Specimens were immerged in distilled water, 2M, 8M, and 14M alkaline solutions for 3, 7, and 21 days. The change in the specimens immersed in a short period of time was not significant, but the compressive strength of the specimens immersed in the distilled water and 8M alkali solution) for 21 days increased more than twice as much as before immersion because of additional geopolymerization. However, compressive strength decreased due to the alkaline aggregate reaction when alkaline solution was supplied more than a certain level of concentration. Therefore, immersing the specimens for more than 21 days in the distilled water or 8M alkaline solution would be desirable for the improvement of compressive strength of autoclave cured specimens.

  • In this paper, front color glass for Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system was implemented by spin coating method using color solution. Solutions suitable for color solutions were investigated using pearlescent pigments and various solutions to implement color glass. One of investigated solutions, NOA 63 and NOA 65, which are ultraviolet light curing agents, were able to implement color glass with superior coating properties and color reproducibility than other solutions. Color glass realized by spin coating with a NOA 65 based color solution showed high transmittance of 86% in the visible and near-infrared wavelength bands, and the change in optical properties of color glass over time was insignificant, making it a suitable material for realizing color glass for BIPV Suitable as a color solution. The solution process method using the spin coating method is expected to facilitate the manufacturing process of front color glass for BIPV as it can produce color glass more easily and quickly than the existing physical deposition method or color glass manufacturing process using nanoparticles.
