Stranger in a Foreign Land. How to Impress and how to be Impressed. A Comprehensive Review on the Differences of Impression Management Behavior between Two Culture: Jamaica and South Korea (경영학적 관점의 국가 간 인상관리 : 자메이카 VS 한국 -)

  • This study examines the differences in the use of self promoting, ingratiating and defensive impression management behavior between Jamaica and South Korea. Previous researches on impression management behavior and culture suggests that differences in culture will determine the type of impression management behavior one uses. This study, therefore aimed to determine which of the two will be more motivated to engage in impression management behavior and does the use of impression management behavior differs based on the differences in culture. Analysis of 102 individuals from Jamaica and South Korea, through the use of questionnaire survey, shows both similarities and differences in the use of impression management behavior. Although there were a few limitations to this research, our findings do highlight some cross-cultural significant differences in the use of impression management behavior between both countries. Results showed that South Korean will be more likely than Jamaican to be motivated to engage in impression management. In addition, South Korean respondents reported higher use of self promoting and ingratiating impression management behavior while Jamaican respondents reported a higher use of defensive impression management behavior.

Repositioning Strategies Following Fast Food Brand Personality (패스트푸드 브랜드 개성에 따른 재포지셔닝 전략)

  • This study attempted to understand the fast food brand personality in the domestic dining market to present the repositioning strategies within the competitive market. Positive analysis results were as follows. First, the five brand individualities of 'familiarity', 'passion', 'professionalism', 'reliability', and 'refinement' were derived. Second, the deductions made on perceptions of the population using a Biplot based on the brand personality showed that there were significant differences among the brand personality images of the brands, which were the targets of comparison. Third, there were significant between-group differences in the comparisons of perception among the subgroups according to gender, brand reliability, and brand satisfaction. Fourth, there were significant between-group differences in the consumer fast food brand preferences and ideal point. Such studies can provide information useful for establishing marketing differentiating strategies by grasping the brand personality of competing brands in the market.

  • The study mainly aims to explore and compare the cultural value orientations of Southeast Asian countries with concrete index of variable factors, and ultimately seeks for directions for Korea better role as a leading country in Southeast Asian economic region. The research limits the scope of the study only to three countries of the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand. It is due to the significant differences of geography, language, and above all unique religion in Southeast Asia region, The Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand are very much similar in many aspects of diverse ethnicity, diverse religion, especially in the aspect of culture. However, it is no doubt, among countries surveyed, that the research show the differences in continuum level in terms of value orientations. Generally it might be due to the history, religion and language differences.

The Purchase Behaviors of Luxury Goods in Internet Shopping Malls according to Shopping Orientation

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the perceived risks and the purchase behaviors for luxury goods in internet shopping malls according to the shopping orientation. 254 questionnaires were distributed from April 10 to May 9 in 2006. For data analysis, frequency, percentage, factor analysis, cluster analysis, chi-square tests were conducted. The results could be summarized as follows. (1) According to cluster analysis of shopping orientation, respondents were classified into five groups: pursuit of pleasure, pursuit of fashion, price consciousness, planned shopping, brand and store loyalty, time-saving and convenience. (2) There were not significant differences in the perceived risks according to shopping orientation. (3) There were not significant differences in purchase reasons and were significant differences in no-purchase reasons.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess gender differences in the quantity and quality of leisure time. It uses time diary for a nationally representative sample of Koreans(10 years old over) collected in 2004 by KNSO. This time use surveys provide information about a primary activity and a secondary activity (that is simultaneous activity accompanying the primary activity). The results was that married women experience less of leisure time and more contaminated leisure time by a secondary activity(especially household labor) than married men. This research presents that men and women have different quantity and quality of leisure time, and gender discrepancies persist in the experience of leisure time.

  • The main purpose of this study is to understand how cognitive factors influence the way people interact with information/information systems, by conducting comprehensive and in-depth literature reviews and a theoretical synthesis of related research. Adaptive systems have been built around an individual user's characteristics, such as interests, preferences, knowledge and goals. Individual differences in the ability to use new information and communication technology have been an important issue in all fields. Performance differences in utilizing new information and communication technology are sufficiently predictable that we can begin to coordinate them. Therefore, it is necessary to understand cognitive mechanisms to explain differences between individuals as well as the levels of performance. The theoretical synthesis from this study can be applied to design intelligent (i.e., human friendly) systems in our everyday lives. Further research should explore optimization design for user, by integrating user's individual traits (such as emotion and intent) and system modules to improve the interactions of human-system in data-driven environments.

Factors Influencing College Students' HPV Vaccination Intention: Focusing on Gender Differences and The Role of Subjective Norms

  • This study intends to examine gender differences in predictors of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination intention based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Specifically, this study investigated whether the variables constituting TPB might show differential effects on college men and women's HPV vaccination intention. The current study also examined which specific subjective norms are more influential in explaining HPV vaccination intention of men and women. The results of an online survey revealed that females showed significantly higher intention to get the HPV vaccine and perceived behavioral control than male students. Female students' vaccination intention was best predicted by perceived behavioral control whereas friend norm was the most influential predictor of male students' intention to get the HPV vaccine. The results of this study provide implications for persuasive strategies required to appeal to college men and women to increase HPV vaccination rate.

Effects of Emoji Approach-Avoidance Visual Experience on Valence Ratings via Mobile Interface

  • We aimed to see if approach-avoidance visual experience would have different effects in the valence rating of emojis. Previous literature has shown that approach-avoidance tendencies have influences people's emotional perceptions. Up until now, research on emojis have been heavily focused on static emojis, which gives room for exploration whether if movement added on to emoji would elicit different emotional responses. In the study, we examined the impact of approach-avoidance visual experience of emojis via mobile interface, categorized into 4 experimental conditions (positive approach, negative approach, positive avoid, and negative avoid), and conducted semi-structured interviews to identify users' reasonings towards their valence ratings on specific emojis with approach or avoid movements. We found that positive approach emojis were the highest valence rating and preferred by the participants, while there were no differences between negative emoji approach or avoidance. Based on these findings, we conclude that positive emojis could be intensified to be more positive with approach motion, yet for negative emojis, individual differences or contextual differences may arise in its emotional ratings.

Comparisons of Family Life Culture among Korean Married Families and Korean-Vietnamese Multicultural Families: Focusing on Family Rituals and Values (한국인 기혼남녀와 한국-베트남 다문화가족의 가족생활문화 비교: 가족의례와 가족가치관을 중심으로)

  • Family life culture embodies the ways of thinking and behaving among family members in everyday lives. With a noticeable growth of multicultural families since 2000, there has been an inflow of other culture into the existing Korean family life culture. This new phenomenon signals a potential transformation of the family life culture in Korean society. To forecast such changes, we compared the family life culture of Korean-Vietnamese multicultural families (as reported by 104 Korean husbands and their Vietnamese wives) with that of mainstream Korean families (as reported by 108 Korean married men and 92 Korean married women) by comparing family ritual practices and family values. We also sought to identify whether two cultures in Korean-Vietnamese multicultural families harmoniously coexist or clash by examining differences within couples. Results showed that Korean married men and Korean husbands of Vietnamese women were very similar in terms of family ritual practices and family values. Differences emerged between Korean husbands and their Vietnamese wives. Specifically, Korean husbands endorsed more traditional gender role beliefs while their family values were less patriarchal compared to their wives. Results suggest that more flexible gender role beliefs reported by Vietnamese wives may be a source of conflict in Korean-Vietnamese multicultural families. At the same time, it may be a driving force of change in their existing family life culture. It will be worthwhile to pay attention in future research to whether and how patriarchal values and flexible gender role beliefs would continue to coexist or modify each other.

The Relationship between Sweetness and Irrigation according to Integrated Solar Radiation in Substrate Culture of Cherry Tomato (방울토마토 고형 배지경에서의 적산일사량에 따른 관수와 당도와의 관계)

  • It was studied about the effects of irrigation schedules by integrated solar radiation on fruit sweetness of cherry tomato in perlite and polyurethane(PUR) culture. In PUR culture. the brix % was decreased with frequent irrigation and their differences were increased as high as the cluster. The brix % in PUR culture was higher than in perlite culture and their differences were large in proportion as the Plant grew when the Percentage of drainage was 25%. The a* value, expressing red color. was not affected by irrigation schedules when the medium was PUR. On the other hand, the value of a* in PUR was higher than that in perlite. and its tendency was large as high as the cluster. The fresh weight of fruit was higher in perlite culture than in PUR culture. From this study it Is recommended that the percentage of drainage is maintained to 25% in PUR culture in view of Productivity and quality of fruits.
