  • We characterized the smelting process and smelting furnace through scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and raman micro-spectroscopy with 13 relics including slags and furnace walls excavated from square-shaped building sites and pits of the Three Kingdoms site at the Ungyo site section I. Our results revealed that the principal components were FeO and SiO2; and CuO, PbO, and ZnO were contained in small quantities. Furthermore, fayalite, magnetite, augite, copper, and cuprite were found. High contents of FeO or SiO2 components seem to have been added to form fayalite to remove gangue in the smelting process. The relatively low content of S detected in the copper prills suggests that roasting was performed well. Cristobalite and mullite, which are minerals that indicate high-temperature found in the furnace wall, show that the smelting temperature was higher than 1,250℃. The findings of this study show a high possibility that the Wanju Ungyo site is smelting remains of copper ores, which are nonferrous metals, rather than iron. Various smelting byproducts excavated in this area in the future will help us better understand the copper smelting process that may have been performed since ancient times.

  • Yearly mean temperature and relative-humidity of the Seokguram Grotto was measured $19~23^{\circ}C$, 40~44% from May, 1998 to December,2002. The measurement has little differences comparing to the optimum guideline (temperature : $20^{\circ}\pm2^{\circ}C$, relative-humidity : $50^{\circ}\pm5%$). It is necessary to increase humidity in the Seokguram Grotto during winter because of heating and decrease the temperature during summer because of a higher temperature of outside. In addition, the diurnal range keep in $4^{\circ}C$ of temperature and in 10% of relative-humidity. Yearly mean concentration of $CO_2$(carbon dioxide) was measured538~658ppm that is higher than concentration of normal atmosphere(360 ppm). The $CO_2$ has an cumulative effect on the surface of stone cultural properties as a form of carbonic acid($H_2CO_3$) after reaction with water. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system should be operated to maintain ideal state for the preservation according to the optimum guideline. Also, the entrance into the Seokguram Grotto should be controlled to prevent a sudden fluctuation of humidity and temperature. Human could carry small particles like a microdust, microbe, etc., into the Seokguram Grotto and also could damage the surface by a direct touch.

  • In the modern popular culture, a significant code is not the truth itself but the seeming truth. To fulfill this function, it is a mythology that has a transcendental power to eliminate any doubt and mystery. That is to say, cultural uniqueness is understood as an identical thing through mass communication, and people perceive it as a similar cultural community. In this process, mythology form and accumulate the matrix of mythological meaning by eliminating the difference between the reality and the illusion. Such a matrix forces a meaningless and unconditional truth and practice without any criticism and reconsideration. This paper tries to extract art and cultural characteristics of mythological image through examining the relationship among mythological image, history, and ideology. For this aim, we make use of Roland Barthes' signs and Daniel Boorstin's image as a basic analytical tool. After that we examine the characteristics of mythological image appeared in modern cultural discourses and the relationship between mythological image and modern popular culture. Furthermore, we consider the mythological image expressed in modern fashion, which has the nature of commodity aesthetics.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how the Post-modernism social cultural pattern has been reflected in collar of costume. In the classes social, collar in costume is the expressive medium of ideology and status symbol such as Passium of ancian Ezypt and Byzantin collar which is examined religion belif. The conspicuous function of collar can be examed as the ruff collar, which is the expressive medium of self-confidence, but the whisk collar and the flat collar means decline the authorized conspicous function. In the cultural pattern of Post-modernism, collar in costume presents the coexistence of double-sides value such as androgyny, dividinism and eclecticism. For example, the tailored collar or shirt collar in women's suit with delicate materials express the self-confidence, energy and intelligence, and the round collar or the draped collar in men's suit with rough material express the sensibility and liberty. In the deconstructivity through breaking the basis form of the collar, callar can be transformed in to sleeve, cape or hat on occasion. In conclusion, the function of collar changes by the cultural pattern and expresses the spirit.

  • Appropriation is of considerable significance in a cultural trend of thought, as one of the means of realizing the post-modernism period. With the increasing use of appropriation techniques in modern fashion, it is necessary to study the external performance and internal aesthetic value of appropriation in fashion. In the book of cultural appropriation, American scholar James o young divides into three categories of appropriation in culture, namely: object appropriation, content appropriation, and subject appropriation. Based on James O Young's three types of appropriation techniques summarized in the theory of the cultural appropriation, the purpose of this study is through the appropriation of the poncho of traditional Mexican clothing in modern fashion as an example; analyzing the external appropriation characteristics and internal aesthetic significance of different appropriation type. The results are as follows. First, designers take the Originality in modern fashion by expressing Mexican Poncho's form, color, pattern, and material as it is through object appropriation technique. Second, through the Mexican folk poncho's style, designers used these to show the similarity produced by content appropriation in modern fashion. Third, designers used the poncho's design concept or poncho's culture, blending the theme of the collection, adding different color, pattern or materials such as fur, lace, and wool, and presenting a new image different from folk costumes through creative subject appropriation technique.

  • Chemical composion and crystal form of Corrosion products found on archaeological iron objects were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence analysis, micro-X-ray powder diffraction analysis and ion chromatographic technique. The nature and behavior of the corrosion products were studied in order to aid in the conservation and restoration of burial iron objects. Twenty-two samples analyzed in this study were collected from iron object found in Korea and Japan. The corrosion products of iron objects from burial mounds contain $\alpha$-FeOOH, $\beta$-FeOOH, $\gamma$-FeOOH, $Fe_3O_4$and amorphous iron hydroxides. The content of $\alpha$-HeOOH is the greatest. Because, Ageing for long period should change the amorphous iron hydroxides is considerably less than that in usual atmospheric corrosion products. The concentration of chlorine and sulfine is remarkably variable ($Cl^-$ : 100- 30,000ppm, $SO_4^-2$ : 20-10,000ppm),but the reasons are unclear. The presence of generally high concentrations of chlorine and sulfine the corrosion products of iron objects seem to be influenced by the marine climatic condition. The presence of high chlorine and sulfine concentrations in the corrosion products of iron objects seem to be influenced by the marine burial environments.
