A Study on Cultural Interpretation of the Plants in "The Book of Songs" - Based on Symbolic Elements and Landscape Elements - (시경(詩經)에 나타난 식물 소재의 문화적 해석 - 상징요소와 경관조성요소의 관점에서 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to sort out the plants in "The Book of Songs", and to analyze the cultural significance of plants from the viewpoint of the symbolic elements and the landscape elements in the 3~11 century BC. The conclusions are as follows. First, there were 147 plant names and 136 plant species in "The Book of Songs", and these results can confirm that the plants were existed in the 3~11 century BC. Second, through analyzing the cultural significance of the plants, cattail, lotus, etc. are the symbol of lovers; peony and willow are the symbol of farewell; bamboo is the symbol of gentleman; and Japanese pepper is the symbol of fecundity. Third, at the viewpoint of the landscape elements, the poplar, dwarf elm, etc. can be used as a place of affection; reed and nepenthe can make a place of melancholy, hazel and chestnut tree, etc. can make a place of power and position, celery and water shield etc. can be used as a place of knowledge. Based on the research of "The Book of Songs", it can help to understand the plants culture in 3~11 century BC, and it will be a useful information for the plant design.

Aesthetic Consciousness and Literary Logic in the Jamesian Transatlantic Perspective: Towards a Dialectic of "a big Anglo Saxon total"

  • The aesthetic attitude, in general or in particular, represented in matters of taste through aesthetic ideas and value judgments postulates a certain literary logic. And this literary logic reveals itself a sense of morality, philosophy, or moral aesthetic consciousness through the moments of act and thought demonstrated in the characters invented in literary works. Henry James, among many others, offers a very special cultural paradigm for transnational argument because of his diverse ways of shaping transatlantic relations in terms of aesthetic consciousness. And this international paradigm produced varied expressions referring to Henry James as "an American expatriate," "an Anglicized American artist," "a Europeanized aesthete," "a cosmopolitan intelligence," "a bohemian cosmopolitan" to designate his literary career and its characteristics shaped in Europe. Such expressions resonate with Transatlantic Sketches, James's first collection on travel and cultures in 1875 which heralded his long "expatriation" in terms of self-distantiation. James's temperament of mind, far from being always identified with shared values within an ideological framework, never avoided friction with fixed ideas but rather absorbed it fully for another friction which intervenes in his house of fiction. My question arises here regarding his cultural belonging or dislocation: where is the place of his mind or what could be his ultimate destination? In this essay, I'd like to define a place or rather the place of James's literary mind by proving a certain "sympathetic justice" for his literary logic. For this purpose, I'll try to examine: how James used transatlantic perspective, a spatio-temporal assessment to formulate his moral aesthetic consciousness; and how the aesthetic framework functions in assessing his literary logic of aesthetic consciousness. To start with the first argument, I'll analyze some essential aspects of aesthetic attitude of his characters to postulate a persona capable of theorizing James's aestheticism conditioned by the transatlantic context. And for the second argument, I'll examine how the persona functions in formulating a proper cultural stance of James's aesthetic consciousness in transatlantic perspective to illuminate the way of how Jamesian individuality reflects the American mind. This process of theorizing a place of James's own will lead, I hope, to our discovering James's ultimate destination on the assumption that it'll prove or create a certain "sympathetic justice" for his humanist aestheticism, a Jamesian absolute morality.

A Study on the Place Specificity of Graffiti Arts Used as Fusion Design Elements in Urban Regeneration (융합 디자인 요소로서 도시재생에 활용된 그라피티의 장소특정성에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to clarify how the graffiti arts used in urban regeneration projects have come to possess the place specificity as public arts. For the research, the theoretical background of the place specificity of graffiti art was explored with the understanding of the concept of place specificity of public art, before comparing the difference of graffiti arts as public art applied to the urban regeneration projects, depending on their installation location and artist. In addition, the specificity of the place where graffiti artwork was installed and its significance in the context of urban regeneration project were explored. The case study is limited to graffiti arts installed in Bosan-dong, Dongducheon-si, where several urban regeneration projects have been pushed for since 2015. It was found from the analysis that the place specificity of individual art works is maximized when they are merged with cultural contents reflecting the history and place specificity of target cities, such as design, crafts, music and festivals, rather than with the place specificity of the works of individual artists. The result of this study suggests that when graffiti arts are fused with urban cultural contents as fusion design elements, their place specificity is maximized enough to elevate them to the level of public arts, and enable them to function as the media of urban regeneration.

An Analysis of the Placeness and Authenticity of an Aging Urban Residential Area from the Perspective of Ordinary Culture (일상문화 관점을 적용한 도시노후주거지역의 장소성과 진정성 분석 - 광주광역시 북구 중흥동 와우산 일대를 사례로 -)

  • A city is an ordinary space and a place of living that is directly related to our lives. An ordinary space is the total products of culture and the target of cultural representation. An aging residential area of a city reflects the ordinary lives of ordinary people along with its unique history; therefore, this place should not be seen only from an economic and political perspective. The Wausan area is a place that best maintains the characteristics and scenery of an aging urban residential area within Gwangju metropolitan city. Through research into this area, it is possible to discover the meaning and true value of an aging urban residential area such as the close relationship between ordinary culture and placeness, the creation factors and process of placeness of an aging urban residential area, and the authenticity of a particular place. This area is a modern residential area of today's ordinary people, created on a topography of hills and hilly areas along with a historical value of 400 years. It is based on the Gyeongyangyeok of the Joseon period. This place may be described as a space where the dailiness of ordinary people is alive based on its alleys and the unique scenery formed by its alleys and vegetable gardens. The authenticity deduced from such placeness is that an aging urban residential area is a place where communicative and considerate human life and a cultural diversity of an atypical nature are alive, a place where an environment and humans coexist in harmony, and a place where the communal dailiness of residents still exists.

A Study on the Architectural Characteristics and Meaning of Wolfsburg Cultural Center (볼프스부르크 문화센터의 건축 특성과 의미에 관한 연구)

  • In Alvar Aalto's designs, important factors of complex building designs including Wolfsburg cultural center are that they insinuate how to develop each architectural type and how to combine them in a building. The humane and physical background studies, and wholistic and systematic approaches are adopted to fulfill research purposes. Comparison with other buildings are necessary to reveal true meaning of this building. The result of analysis show characteristics of Wolfsburg cultural center as follows; hybrid composition of mass and elevation, spatial effect using level difference and light, massing variation of roof, and creating space for various activities. Wolfsburg cultural center designed in late 1950s has greatly affected Aalto's later works through various architectural experiments because it is the first cultural complex project that combined various architectural types. Especially library in the cultural center has shown transitional characteristics to famous fan-type libraries of 1960s while maintained features about Viipuri library. Wolfsburg cultural center act as an another type which present new principles of clustering, massing and exterior design. Its true meaning lies in forming a humanizing place beyond spatial configuration.

  • This study aimed to provide data for planning of a small-sized complex-cultural facility for not only artists but also the common. The main interest of the study was to make them understand spirit related to the culture to each other. The data was collected from 100 artists in various art fields and 100 the common by a questionnaire and a visiting survey. The result of this study indicated that people had a little of chance to share their cultural opinions with others because there were not enough appropriate places even though they wanted it. Besides, they would like to use the place for their communication which consists of a range of their needs such as watching a play, listening to music, spending tea-time, etc.

  • The core of character and concept in an exhibition space of contemporary museum is that the place for relics and materials changes into the place for spectators, the static exhibition place changes into the dynamic exhibition place, and the place for learning naturally during amusement. In other words, it could convey the conceptual exhibition object which is not the material object called a relic, it could be a place where is to investigate, participate, experience and enjoy with easily method to general public, and ordinary people are supposed to experience with integrative the world of intellectual, cultural and artistic which is inconcionsly rising a dimensiov. In order to response positively the change of these exhibition concept itself, exhibition system will be established through the analysis of realistic exhibition objects with the visulatization of theme or thought of an exhibitiov. In process of conveying image, the effective and concrete exhibition method and technique should be measured in order to realize the communication between spectators and exhibition objects. The purpose of this study is to find the methodology which is enable to establish the exhibition theme and presentation system through the selection and analysis of exhibition objects in major cases of a musem of ecience and engneering, to find the process model till the methodology applies to the space scheme, and to find finally the designed indicators which is applicable to the progress of exhibition desigv.

  • This study carried out field evaluation by experts, monitoring by the public, and visitor satisfaction survey for 77 cases of utilization of cultural property projects that received support from "Living and Breathing Hyanggyo and Seowon" in 2016. The result was 'normal' for the comprehensive evaluation, and by section, 'good' for planning, operating, performance, outcome and annual special index. The field evaluation by experts was rated as 'good', monitoring by the public was 'good', and also 'good' for visitor satisfaction survey. The advantages of the project were as follows; increased chance for enjoyment of local cultural heritage, expansion of human network for utilization of local cultural heritage, utilization of cultural heritage as community place, diversification of educational contents by using cultural heritage. On the other hand, the disadvantages were as follows; decline of program's quality, shortage of putting plan in practice, insufficient interest and participation of local government, insufficient promoting, shortage of educational contents for free semester system. At last, we suggested measures to develop the project as follows; develop program by using local characteristics, develop programs for foreigner, training experts, increasing on-line promotion, develop new lecture technique, utilization of cultural heritage as a local community place, utilization planning by each space, improvement of evaluation system, tightening up reflection of visitor's opinions, consulting for each programs.

A Study on the Conservation of Excavated Features (발굴유구의 보존방법과 적용)

  • When the term conservation is used with regard to excavated features, it means not only conservation but also restoration. Restoring the features here does not imply restoring their original form but restoring their form at the moment of excavation. That means, the conservation of excavated features includes the concept of both reparation and restoration. The way of conserving excavated features can be largely categorized into on-site conservation and transfer conservation. On-site conservation means to conserve excavated features as they were at the excavation site. It can be further categorized into soil-covered on-site conservation, in which excavated features are covered with soil to prevent them from being damaged, and exposed on-site conservation in which the features were conserved as they were exposed. Transfer conservation is operated on the premise that excavated features are transferred to another place. It can be further categorized into original form transfer, transcribing transfer, reproduction transfer, and dismantlement transfer. Original form transfer refers to the method of moving the original forms of excavated features to another place. Transcribing transfer refers to moving some of the surfaces of excavated features to another place. Reproduction transfer refers to restoring the forms of excavated features in another place after copying the forms of excavated features at the excavation site. Dismantlement transfer refers to the method of restoring excavated features in a place other than the excavation site in the reverse order of dismantlement after dismantling the features at the excavation site. The most fundamental issue regarding conserving excavated features is the conservation of their original forms. However, the conservation of excavated features tends to be decided depending on a variety of conditions such as society, economy, culture, and local situations. In order to conserve excavated features more effectively, more detailed and specialized conservation methods should be created. Furthermore, continuing research is needed to find the most effective way of conserving them through exchange with other neighboring academic fields and scientific technology.

A Study on Place Archiving Methodology Through Community Participation (주민참여를 통한 장소 기록화 방안 연구)

  • This study explores the strategies for documenting extinct places by clarifying the concepts of place and sense of place and highlighting the importance of place documentation. The disappearance of a place signifies the loss of a medium that evokes memory. Place documentation, a process of recording the sense of place, can restore memory media, resolve the lack of shared memories, and strengthen community identity. It also provides archiving methods and tools to involve stakeholders as record producers to enrich the context further. Thus, the study proposes key strategies, including resident participation, communication of place identity through archives, and cultural-artistic integration projects. The Jeungpyeong Archives' "Maryknoll Clinic" project serves as a case study based on these strategies to illustrate how place documentation is implemented.
