The fruiting habit pattern of white-spine cucumber, whose fruits are usually borne on the lateral branches, is different from domestic ones. The cucumber production far export has been focused on how to promote lateral shooting and how to increase the number of lateral branches. As the growing season of the exporting cucumber is confined to winter season, low temperature and weak light are limiting factors to lateral shooting. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar application of growth regulator for induction of lateral shoot in white-spine cucumber. foliar application of growth regulator were focused on concentration and application time based on number of leaves. The visible damages were observed in applied leaves by $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA(benzyladenine) in retarding culture, but no significant by $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA in case of semi-forcing culture. The number of available lateral shoots were greater in applied plant with $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA than that of $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA, in applied plants at 10th and 15th loaves than that of applied plants at 5th leaves.
This study aimed to examine a suppression effect of salinity on extension rate of stem elongation of cucumber seedlings (Cucumis sativus L.) grafted with roots of figleaf gourd plant. The effects of application methods, timings, and concentrations of two salt types, sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$), were compared to untreated control plants. In result, an obvious suppression effect on the excessive elongation of stem was obtained by both sub-irrigated and medium-mixed NaCl salt. An improvement in quality of transplants was also obtained by the sub-irrigated NaCl salt. Foliar-applied NaCl caused visible leaf injury when the concentration was higher than 40 mM; but, with no effect on suppressing the stem elongation. When the NaCl was applied at 7 days after grafting, a higher concentration of NaCl was demanded for suppressing the stem elongation compared to an application at the day of grafting. No effect of the NaCl salt on the fresh weights of 36-day grown plants was observed; but, there was a negative effect on the number of female flowers at a high temperature season. Overall, the NaCl salt was more effective on slowing down the stem elongation and had the lower incidence of leaf injury than the $CaCl_2$ salt.
This study was conducted to improve marketing value and productivity of cucumber which was cultivated with primary scaffold stem type (Mannungcheongjang) and lateral stem type (Sayeup). The results are summarized as follows ; 1. Investigation of fruit setting characteristics to improve cucumber training type was resulted that the fruit-thinning was effective 3 nodes in Mannung- cheongjang and 4 nodes in Sayeup, because of defected yield potential and marketing value. 2. In the matter of early growing stage after training and cucumber quality at different treatment, cucumber weight at flowering curved cucumber and growth analysis of Mannungcheongjang were good in order of horizontal>vertical>slant training. And those of Sayeup were good in order of horizontal >slant> vertical training. 3. Aspect of light reception of cucumber plant in the level of plant height and accumulated leaf area index, vertical and horizontal training are better than slant in Mannungcheongjang, and there is order of horizontal >vertical >slant training in Sayeup. 4. Horizontal training in Mannungcheongjang was superior to any other case In view of cucumber number, productivity, and marketing rate. Therefore, this training was suggest ed of best method in cucumber cultivation.

Long-term continuous application of livestock by-products to agricultural land may adversely affect the soil characteristics and the crop yield. Five year term study from 2007 was carried out to assess the effects of repeated application of low-concentration swine slurry on soil chemical properties including phosphate and heavy metal contents and yield of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) in a greenhouse. Treatments were conventional chemical fertilizers and three application rates of low-concentration swine slurry (Slurry composting and biofiltration, SCB): 50%, 100%, and 200% of recommended nitrogen fertilization. For swine slurry treatment of 50% nitrogen, deficient nitrogen was supplemented with urea fertilizer. The soil phosphorus and heavy metal contents after five year continuous application of swine slurry were not significantly higher than those of chemical fertilizer use. Repeated application of the swine slurry alone for five years resulted in relatively high soil exchangeable potassium and sodium compared with chemical fertilizer treatment. Contents of heavy metals in leaves of tomato and cucumber did not show significant difference among treatments. Yields of the crops for the swine slurry were not significantly different from that of chemical fertilizer. The results imply that continuous application of the swine slurry may not influence levels of soil phosphate and trace elements in greenhouse soils but could accumulate potassium and sodium in the soil.
BACKGROUND: Greenhouse crops are one of agricultural products consumed largely in Korea. Cucumber is a typical example as main vegetables of greenhouse crops. Thus, pesticide residue analysis is an important requirement to guarantee pesticide safety of cucumber. This work was aim to investigate the residues of penthiopyrad and pyriofenone in cucumber after harvest. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cucumber was subjected to treat with penthiopyrad and pyriofenone at a level of recommended dose 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days before harvest under greenhouse conditions. The samples were extracted with organic solvent by using a homogenizer and purified on solid phase cartridge column followed by LC-MS/MS analysis. The recovery levels of penthiopyrad and pyriofenoneranged from approximately 81 to 93% with the method limit of 0.005 mg/kg and coefficient of variation less than 10%. Penthiopyrad and pyriofenone were detected at a level less than maximum residue limit in cucumber at 10 days before. The half-lives of penthiopyrad and pyriofenone were determined to 2.4 ~ 2.6 days. CONCLUSION: Penthiopyrad and pyriofenone are suggested to use in cucumber 10 days before harvest to reach their levels less than maximum residue limit.

This experiment was carried out to develop the substrate mixtures for the production of high quality plug seedlings of cucumber. Peatmoss based substrates, rice hull, carbonized rice hull, decomposed sawdust, perlite and granular rockwool were mixed by five different mixing ratioes (M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5). The cultivars used were cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Janghyung heukjinju) plants. The higher the content of peatmoss added, the higher the plant growth in terms of plant height, leaf area and total dry weight, which leading to the production of high quality plug seedlings. Seedlings growth of cucumber were greater in M5 mixtures [peatmoss:rice hull:decomposed sawdust=40:40:20(v/v)], M4 mixtures [peatmoss:rice hull:decomposed sawdust:granular rockwool=30:25:20:25(v/v)] and M2 mixtures [peatmoss:rice hull:decomposed sawdust:granular rockwool=20:20:15:25:20(v/v)] The concentrations of nutrient solution (EC) had a great influence on plant height, leaf area, total fresh and dry weight of cucumber seedlings growth. As the concentration of nutrient solution increased from 0.1 to $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, the growth and seedling quality of cucumber in plant height, leaf area and dry weight were significantly improved.
Although the roles of calcium in plant are widely known, little is known about on an antagonistic effect of macro elements, oxalate biosynthesis and main shape of crystal in cucumber plant organs. Seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus cv. Ijoeunbackdadagi) were germinated in perlite tray supplied with distilled-deionized water. Seedlings were transplanted into aerated containers with a half strength of Ross nutrient solution. Ca levels treated in media were as follows; No-Ca, $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 0.25, 1.25 and 2.5 mmol $L^{-1}$, and $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 2.5 mmol $L^{-1}$ + $CaCl_210$, 25 and 50 mmol $L^{-1}$. Ca-deficient and -excessive conditions severely reduced cucumber growth, as compared to the control, and adversely affected an accumulation of macro elements (N, P, K, and Mg). Calcium favorably induced oxalate (acid-soluble) synthesis in leaves and roots of cucumber plant, but not in stem. Acid-soluble oxalate contents in leaves proportionally increased with Ca supply levels (0.91, P<0.001), however, this pattern was not observed in stem and roots. Ca-oxalate crystal formation and compositional analysis were examined using SEM-EDS technique in cucumber leaves. The main type of crystal revealed a prismatic crystal and main components were Ca, Na and Cl.
The use of subsurface drip fertigation using slurry composting bio-filtration (SCB) as nitrogen (N) fertilizer source can be beneficial to improve fertilizer management decision. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of SCB liquid fertilizer by subsurface drip fertigation on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) yield and soil nitrogen (N) distribution under greenhouse condition. Cucumber in greenhouse was transplanted on April $4^{th}$ and Aug $31^{st}$ in 2012. N sources were SCB and urea. Four N treatments with 3 replications consisted of control (No N fertilizer), SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N (50:50 split application), SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N. 100% of N recommendation rate from soil testing was denoted as 1.0N. The subsurface drip line and a tensiometer were installed at 30 cm soil depth. An irrigation was automatically started when the tensiometer reading was -15 kPa. The growth of cucumber at 85 days after transplanting was 5% higher in all N treatment than control. Semi-forcing culture produced more fruit yield than retarding culture. Fruit yields were 62.2, 76.3, 76.4, and 75.1 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for control, SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N, and SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N, respectively. Although fruit yields were similar under SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N, and SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N, 176 kg K $ha^{-1}$ can be over applied if cucumber is grown twice a year under SCB 1.0N that may result in K accumulation in soil. N uptake was 172, 209, 213, 207 kg $ha^{-1}$ for control, SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N, and SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N, respectively. N use efficiency was the highest (37%) at SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N under semi-forcing culture. Nitrate-N concentration in soil for all N treatments except control in semi-forcing culture was the highest between 15 and 30 cm soil depth at the 85 days after transplanting and between 0 and 15 cm soil depth after cucumber harvest. These results suggested that SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N can be used as an alternative N management for cucumber production in greenhouse if K accumulation is concerned.
Cucumbers(Cucumis sativus L. CV. SHARP 1) were cultivated by bag culture for 5 months to investigate the effect of substrates on growth, yield, and mineral contents. The substrates used in the experiment were vermiculite + perlite +peatmoss(1:1:1=V:V:V), perlite+peatmoss(1:1=V:V), perlite+carbonized chaff(7:3=V:V), rockwool, sawdust, and chaff+chaff powder under 10 mesh (7:3=V:V). The rate of moisture content was highest at chaff powder under 10 mesh as 42.5% and was lowest at perlite+carbonized chaff as 31%. Plant height, No. of leaves, fresh and dry weight were increased in vermiculite+perlite+peatmoss(1:1:1=V:V:V). Marketable fruits and yield also showed same aspect with growth. All kinds of mineral contents except K in cucumber plants were higher at vermiculite+perlite+peatmoss(1:1:1=V:V:V), but K content was higher at perlite+ carbonized chaff(7:3=V:V) than those other substrates.
To verify suitability of the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber, chemical changes of soil, growth characteristics and yield of cucumber as affected by conventional fertigation method (Control), the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture (DNF) and Yamasaki cucumber recipe (YCR) were investigated. At 48 days after transplant, photosynthetic and transpiration rate of cucumber leaves were the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2 strength of YCR, but not different with the Control, in the later growing period photosynthetic rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and YCR and was clearly different with the Control, transpiration rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2, 1 strengths of YCR. The growth and yield of cucumber, nutrient elements of cucumber leaves except for calcium were more in DNF and YCR than in the Control. Compared with pre-treated loam soil, pH of the soil was low and electric conductivity was high in all treatments, amounts of accumulated phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were much in the higher concentrations per the kinds of nutrient solutions. From the above results, it was considered that the developed nutrient solution has suitability as nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber.
