  • The effect of indium on the microstructure and hardness of a Au-Pt-Cu ternary alloy was investigated using optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimeter, scanning electron microscopy x-ray diffractometry, electron probe microanalizer and vickers hardness tester. A hardness of the solution floated Au-Pt-Cu-0.5In quarternary alloy with 0.5 wt.% was reached a maximum value (162 Hv) in 30 min at 550$^{\circ}C$ in the range of 150 to 950$^{\circ}C$ but that of the alloy was rapidly increased until 30 min with increasing aging time at 550$^{\circ}C$ and after that was remained almost constant value. Also, the microhardness of the matrix Au-Pt-Cu ternary alloy aged at 550$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min was continuously increased with indium contents and the grain size of Au-Pt-Cu ternary alloy decreased as increased indium contents. Analyses of EPMA and XRD revealed that the matrix Au-Pt-Cu-In quarternary alloy is composed of fcc structure and intermetallic InPt$_3$ precipitate with Ll$_2$ structure. Based on this investigation, it can be concluded that an increase in microhardness of Au-Pt-Cu-In quarternary alloy is due to precipitation hardening InPt$_3$ and grain size refinement.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the mechanical properties of AlSiCu aluminum alloy by the two-step solution heat treatment. The microstructure of gravity casting specimen represents a typical dendrite structure having a secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of 40 mm. In addition to the Al matrix, a large amount of coarsen eutectic Si phase, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase, and Fe-rich phases are generated. The eutectic Si phases are fragmented and globularized with solution heat treatment. Also, the $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase is resolutionized into the Al matrix. The $2^{nd}$ solution temperature at $525^{\circ}C$ might be a optimum condition for enhancement of mechanical properties of AlSiCu aluminum alloy.

  • Recently, the actuator worked by the driving recovery-force of the thermo elastic martensitic transformation of shape memory alloys(SMA) has been studied. This paper presents a study on the fatigue life of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators undergoing thermally induced martensitic phase transformation under various stress levels. shape memory recoverable stress and strain of Ti-44.5at.%Ni-8at.%Cu alloys were by means of constant temperature tensile tests. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed in order to investigate the transformation characteristics of the alloy before the tests. the results were summarized as follows. The martensite inducing stress incerased with the increasing of the Cu-contents. The fatigue life decreased with the increasing of the test load and the Cu-content. The data acquired will be very useful during the design process of an SMA NiTiCu element as a functional part of an actuator.

  • This study examined the effects of a decrease in thickness of magnetic alloy flakes on the electromagnetic wave absorption characteristics of nanocrystalline $Fe_{73.5}Cu_1Nb_3Si_{15.5}B_7$ (at.%) alloy flakes/polymer composite sheets available for a quasi-microwave band. The thickness of FeCuNbSiB alloy flakes decreased to 1-2 $\mu$m with increasing milling time up to 24 h, and the composite sheet including alloy flakes milled for 24 h exhibited considerably enhanced power loss properties in the GHz range compared to the sheets having non-milled alloy powders. Although a considerable increase in loss factor upon milling was observed in the narrow frequency range of 4-6 GHz, there was no correlation between the complex permeability and flake thickness. However, the complex permittivity increased with increasing milling time, and there was good agreement between the milling time and the frequency dependences of the complex permittivity and power loss.

  • In this study, we investigated the tribology behaviour of two different bearing materials. One of these alloys content is Cu(90)-Sn(10) alloy and is widely used in the automotive industry. The other is Al alloy. This bearing content is Al-Sn-Si-Cu. Therefore, it is required to study on the lublicating characteristics of bearing according to different materials. In this study, compressor bearings made by respectively "PTFE solid lubricant" and "AI alloy with superior load carrying capacity, rubbing and impact endurance", have gone through journal bearing test. Lubrication and abrasion characteristics are evaluated by analyzing the material characteristics of a scroll compressor bearing bush. The AI alloy bearing showed the most excellent lubrication and abrasion characteristics than Cu-Sn alloy under high load condition.

  • Infiltration is a popular technique used to produce valve seat rings and guides to create dense parts. In order to develop valve seat material with a good thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient, Cu-infiltrated properties of sintered Fe-Co-M(M=Mo,Cr) alloy systems are studied. It is shown that the copper network that forms inside the steel alloy skeleton during infiltration enhances the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of the steel alloy composite. The hard phase of the CoMoCr and the network precipitated FeCrC phase are distributed homogeneously as the infiltrated Cu phase increases. The increase in hardness of the alloy composite due to the increase of the Co, Ni, Cr, and Cu contents in Fe matrix by the infiltrated Cu amount increases. Using infiltration, the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient were increased to 29.5 W/mK and $15.9um/m^{\circ}C$, respectively, for tempered alloy composite.

  • In this study, Mg-Zn alloys are investigated in terms of their thermal properties after an addition of Cu. Al element is added to improve the mechanical properties and castability in general case. However, it was excluded here because it significantly decreases the thermal conductivity. On the other hand, Zn was added as a major element, which had less influence on reducing the conductivity and can complement the mechanical properties as well. Cu was also added, and it improved the heat transfer characteristics as the amount was increased. The composition ranges of Zn and Cu are 6 wt.% and 0~1.5 wt.%, respectively. Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy was prepared by a gravity casting method using a steel mold and then the thermal conductivity and the microstructure of the as-cast material were investigated. By measuring the density_(${\rho}$), specific heat_(Cp) and thermal diffusivity_(${\alpha}$), the thermal conductivity_(${\lambda}$) was calculated by the equation ${\lambda}={\rho}{\cdot}Cp{\cdot}{\alpha}$. As the amount of Cu increased in the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, the heat transfer characteristics were improved, resulting in a synergistic effect which is slow when the added Cu exceeds 1 wt.%. In order to investigate the relative thermal conductivity/emission of the Mg-6Zn-xCu alloy, AZ91 and AZ31 were experimentally evaluated and compared using a separate test equipment. As a result, the Mg-6Zn-1.5Cu alloy when compared to AZ91 showed improvements in the thermal conductivity ranging from 30 to 60% with a nearly 20% improvement in the thermal emission.

  • This study evaluated the mechanical properties of Ti-Cu alloys with the hope of developing an alloy for dental casting with better mechanical properties than unalloyed titanium. Ti-Cu alloys with four concentrations of Cu(2,5,10wt%) were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. The microstructure and micro-Vickers hardness were determined. X-ray diffraction pattern test was performed on the polished specimens. The microstructure of 2%Cu and 5%Cu alloys are shown acicular ${\alpha}Ti$ phase formed on the surfaces of previously formed $\beta$grains. The 10%Cu alloys has essentially a eutectoid structure; this structure includes lamella of ${\alpha}Ti$ and $Ti_2Cu$ phase that transformed from ${\alpha}Ti$ at the eutectoid temperature. The micro-Vickers hardness of CP Ti specimens was significantly(p<0.05) lower than that of any of the other alloys. Among the Ti-Cu alloys, the 10%Cu alloys exhibited a significantly(p<0.05) higher hardness value. but lower than that of Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy. From these results, it was concluded that new alloys for dental castings should be designed as Ti-Cu based alloys if other properties necessary for dental castings were obtained.

  • In this study, dissolution and melting phenomenon of the Al2Cu was studied for the high-strength Al-Si-Cu aluminum alloy in automobile component. The Solution heat treatment was performed at 480℃ and 510℃ for 4hours. Microstructure analysis of the specimen was performed using the optical micrograph and scanning electron microscope for qualitative and quantitative analysis of various phases, the chemical composition of secondary phases was achieved by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron probe micro analysis (EPMA). As a result of the electron probe micro analysis, a plate like Al2Cu phase was observed, and eutectic Si phase was observed of a coarsen plate shape. At a temperature of 510, necking phenomenon occurs in a specific part of plate like Al2Cu, and it is segmented and dissolved in the Al matrix. When the temperature of the alloy exceeds the melting point of Al2Cu, incipient melting occurs at the grain boundary of undissolved Cu particles

  • The diffusion barrier properties of TiN by using Cu(Mg) alloy film have been investigated. Cu(Mg) alloy film was deposited on air-exposed TiN film. Upon annealing, interfacial MgO of 100 $\AA$ has been formed due to the reaction of Mg with oxygen existed on the surface of TiN. Combined MgO/TiN structure prevented the interdiffusion of Cu and Si up to $800^{\circ}C$. To improve the adhesion of Cu(Mg) alloy film to the TiN, TiN layer was treated by $O_2$ plasma, followed by vacuum annealing at $300^{\circ}C$. It was found that increased oxygen on the surface of TiN film by plasma treatment enhanced segregation of Mg toward the interface, resulting in the formation of dense MgO layer. Improved adhesion characteristics have been formed through this treatment. However, increased power of $O_2$ plasma led to the formation of TiO$_2$ and decreased the Mg content to be segregated to the interface, resulting in the decrease in adhesion property. In addition, the deposition of 50 ${\AA}$ Si on the TiN enhanced the adhesion of Cu(Mg) alloy to TiN without deteriorating the TiN diffusion barrier characteristics.
