  • Recent development in the field of RE-Ba-Cu-O (REBCO, RE: Y or rare earth elements) bulk high-Tc superconductors (HTS) is reviewed in the present paper. After the fatal weak link problem of sintered REBCO superconductors has been overcome by melt processing, this field has been greatly advanced during last ten years. The critical current density $J_c$ at 77 K has been enhanced by introducing effective flux pinning sites into the $REBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (RE123) superconducting matrix. Large melt-textured REBCO bulk crystals have been fabricated with the TSMG(top-seeded melt growth) technique. Mechanical properties of REBCO bulks have been improved by using the Ag additive or epoxy resin. Real bulk applications such as current lead, fault current limiter, flywheel energy storage system, magnetic field source, magnetic separation system, and etc., surely come true near future.

  • The sintering process of BSCCO 2223 tapes is a complex process that is very sensitive to parameters, such as temperature, oxygen partial pressure, heating and cooling rate and holding time. During the first heat treatment, 2212 phase of precursor powder is partially transformed into 2223 phase and some residual secondary phases, such as $(Bi,Pb)_2$$Sr_2$CuO/sub y/(2201), $(Ca,Sr)_2$CuO/sub y/(2/1AEC), (Ca,Sr)/sub 14/Cu/sub 24/O/sub 41/(14/24 AEC) etc. The secondary phases are difficult to be removed from the BSCCO 2223 matrix on the heat treatment. These secondary phases degrade the critical current density. In order to minimize the amount and size of alkaline earth cuprate(AEC) particles step heat treatment is applied during the first heat treatment under the varying atmosphere. Experimental results showed that by adapting the step heat treatment process, the amount and particle size of the secondary phases in the final tapes are decreased. Consequently, the BSCCO 2223grain texture and Jc properties are improved.

  • We studied formation of nanostructured $TiB_2$-Cu composites under shock wave conditions. We investigated the influence of preliminary mechanical activation (MA) of Ti-B-Cu powder mixtures on the peculiarities of the reaction between Ti and B under shock wave. In the MA-ed mixture the reaction proceeded completely while in the non-activated mixture the reagents remained along with the product . titanium diboride. The size of titanium diboride particles in the central part of the compact was 100-300 nm.

  • In this paper, we studied the matrix type Powder AC Electroluminescence using ZnS:Cu,Cl Phosphor. Previously, Powder AC EL was used in Backlighting of LCD. Rescently, organic Thin Film EL was rapidly developed because of high Luminescence and low applied voltage. But Powder AC EL has Superior features that include sheet like flexibility thickness, low weight, self-emission, a wide viewing angle and a fast response time. We tried to change of phosphor thickness and binder mixture rate in order to obtain the good condition of powder AC EL and we obtained the very low breakdown voltage that was just 15V. Till now, we measured the current-voltage(V-I), luminance-voltage(V-L), Luminance-current (L-I), color coordinate (CIE), and phosphor Intensity of variable thickness. In experiment result, the devices has the luminance of 840 cd/$m^2$ and improved color coordinate, x=0.1557, y=0.2145, using a 10kHz drive frequency.

  • (Sm/Y)$_{1.8}$B $a_{2.4}$C $u_{3.4}$$O_{7-x}$ [(Sm/Y)1.8] high $T_{c}$ superconductors were directionally grown by Rod-type Seed Melt Growth(RSMG) process in air atmosphere. The sintered polycrystalline N $d_{1.8}$B $a_{2.4}$C $u_{3.4}$$O_{7-x}$(Nd1.8) of rod-type seed crystal grown by extrusion mold process were used for achieving the ab-plane alignment haying large grains perpendicular to the center of (Sm/Y)1.8 samples. The observations using TEM micrographs of the melt-textured (Sm/Y)1.8 samples revealed that the nonsuperconducting (Sm/Y)211 inclusions are uniformly distributed in the superconducting (Sm/Y)123 matrix. The microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated by XRD, TEM and SQUID magnetometer. The RSMG (Sm/Y)1.8 samples showed an onset $T_{c}$ $\geq$ 90 K and sharp superconducting transition.nsition.ion.nsition.

  • Effects of aging treatment on the microstructures and microhardness of a rapidly solidified Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The as-melt-spun ribbon was consisted of fine ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and icosahedral intermetallic compound which were precipitated in the matrix. Two exothermic peaks with the range of $120^{\circ}C-190^{\circ}C$ and $280^{\circ}C-344^{\circ}C$ corresponded to ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and ${\theta}^{\prime}$, S', $T_1$ precipitating reaction respectively, and two endothermic peaks with the range of $190^{\circ}C-280^{\circ}C$ and $344^{\circ}C-550^{\circ}C$ corresponded to dissolution of ${\delta}^{\prime}$ and ${\theta}^{\prime}$, S', $T_1$ respectively in DSC curves. Peak hardness value was obtained at $210^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr aging treatment.

  • A $Cu^{2+}$ ion-selective membrane microelectrode has been fabricated from poly vinyl chloride (PVC) matrix membrane containing a new symmetrical hexadentate Schiff,s base 2-{1-(E)-2-((Z)-2-{(E)-2-[(Z)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethylidene]hydrazono}-1-methylpropylidene)hydrazono]ethyl}phenol (HDNOS) as a neutral carrier, Potassium tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) borate (KTpClPB) as an anionic excluder and o-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE) as a plasticizing solvent mediator. The microelectrode displays linear potential response in the concentration range of $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-5}-1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-11}$ M of $Cu^{2+}$. The microelectrode exhibits a nice Nernstian slope of 25.9 ${\pm}$ 0.3 mV $decade^{-1}$ in the pH range of 3.1-8.1. The sensor has a relatively short response time in whole concentration ranges ($\sim$5 s). The detection limit of proposed sensor is $5.0\;{\times}\;10^{-12}$ M (320 pg/L), and it can be used over a period of eight weeks. The practical utility of the sensor has been demonstrated by using it as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of $Cu^{2+}$ with EDTA. The proposed membrane electrode was used for the direct determining of $Cu^{2+}$ content in black and red pepper, and in waste water samples.

  • Microstructure and tensile strength of the vacuum brazed stainless steel(STS303) and Cu were investigated. For brazing, the BNi-2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 (A.W.S standard) were used as filler metals. The Oxides such as $Cr_2O_3$ and $SiO_2$ were observed at brazed layers between STS303 and Cu matrix. Also, the intermetallic compounds of Cr-B and Ni-P were observed at brazed layers. Brazed STS303-Cu specimens with BNi-2, 3, 4 filler metals showed almost elastic deformation followed by plastic yielding and strain hardening up to a peak stress. On the other hand, it is likely that the fracture of the brazed specimens with BNi-6 and 7 was occurred in elastic range without plastic yielding up to a peak stress. Among these filler metals, the BNi-2 brazed at $1050^{\circ}C$ showed excellent wettability and the highest tensile strength (101.6MPa).

  • Copper powder dispersed with 4 vol.% of $Cr_2O_3$ was successfully produced by a simple milling at 210 K with a mixture of $Cu_2O$, Cu and Cr elemental powders, followed by Hot Pressing (HP) at 1123 K and 50 MPa for 2h to consolidate the milled powder. The microstructure of the HPed material was characterized by standard metallographic techniques such as XRD (X-ray Diffraction), TEM and STEM-EDS. The results of STEMEDS analysis showed that the HPed materials comprised a mixture of nanocrystalline Cu matrix and $Cr_2O_3$ dispersoid with a homogeneous bimodal size distribution. The mechanical properties of the HPed materials were characterized by micro Vickers hardness test at room temperature. The thermodynamic considerations on the heat of formation, the incubation time to ignite MSR (Mechanically induced Self-sustaining Reaction), and the adiabatic temperature for the heat of displacement reaction between the oxide-metal are made for the delayed formation of $Cr_2O_3$ dispersoid in terms of MSR suppression. The results of TEM observation and hardness test indicated that the relatively large dispersoids in the HPed materials are attributed to the significant coarsening for the high temperature consolidation; this leads to the low Vickers hardness value. Based on the thermodynamic calculation for the operating processes with a limited number of parameters, the formation kinetics and coarsening of the $Cr_2O_3$ dispersoid are discussed.
