Mo-Cu alloys have been widely used for heat sink materials, vacuum technology, automobile, and many other applications due to their excellent physical and electric properties. Especially, Mo-Cu composites with 5 ~ 20 wt.% copper are widely used for the heavy duty service contacts due to their excellent properties like low coefficient of thermal expansion, wear resistance, high temperature strength, and prominent electrical and thermal conductivity. In most of the applications, highly-dense Mo-Cu materials with homogeneous microstructure are required for better performance. In this study, Mo-Cu alloys were prepared by PBM (planetary ball milling) and SPS (spark plasma sintering). The effect of Cu with contents of 5~20 wt.% on the microstructure and thermal properties of Mo-Cu alloys was investigated.
Fe and Si are common impurity elements in the aluminum alloys. In this investigation, the effects of the addition of Fe and Si on the age-hardening behaviors of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd casting alloys were examined through hardness measurements, calorimetric techniques and observation of the transmission electron microscopy. The addition of Fe depresses the formation of GPII and ${\theta}'$, and thus retards the peak aging time and reduces the peak hardness of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd alloys. On the contrary, the addition of Si accelerates the formation of GPII and ${\theta}'$ and thus accelerates age-hardening behaviors of the Al-Cu-Mn-Ti-Zr-Cd alloys.
Experimental Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. The grade 2 CP Ti was used to control. To investigate the surface reaction layers produced by the reaction with mold materials and the influence of the reaction layers on the hardness of castings, A phosphate bonded $SiO_2$ base investment was used as mold material, and microstructure observation and hardness test were performed. The surface reaction layers of Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were thinner than that of CP Ti had a clearly multiple structure. A difference of the hardness between surface and inner of the Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys became less than that of CP Ti. From the results, it was found that the Ti-Zr-(Cu) based alloys were possible to cast with $SiO_2$ base investment without the great changes of mechanical properties of the castings.
The microstructure of Cu-Mg-P base alloys were significantly affected by small amounts of Fe and Co additions, however the tensile properties and electrical conductivity of the Cu alloys were mainly determined by the fabrication process. Relatively high electrical conductivity (> 80% IACS) was obtained in the all Cu-Mg-P based alloys when they were finally aged at $480^{\circ}C$. Tensile properties could be significantly enhanced by final cold rolling, especially at extremely low temperatures. Softening of cold-rolled alloys took place at about $450^{\circ}C$ owing to recovery and recrystallization, but it was delayed up to $500^{\circ}C$ in the Fe-added alloy.
A semi-empirical method to estimate the surface tension of molten alloys at different oxygen partial pressures is suggested in this study. The surface tension of molten Ag-Sn and Ag-Cu alloys were calculated using the Butler equation with the surface tension value of pure substance at a given oxygen partial pressure. The oxygen partial pressure ranges were $2.86{\times}10^{-12}$-$1.24{\times}10^{-9}$ Pa for the Ag-Sn system and $2.27{\times}10^{-11}$-$5.68{\times}10^{-4}$ Pa for the Ag-Cu system. In this calculation, the interactions of the adsorbed oxygen with other metallic constituents were ignored. The calculated results of the Ag-Sn alloys were in reasonable accordance with the experimental data within a difference of 8%. For the Ag-Cu alloy system at a higher oxygen partial pressure, the surface tension initially decreased but showed a minimum at $X_{Ag}$ = 0.05 to increase as the silver content increased. This behavior appears to be related to the oxygen adsorption and the corresponding surface segregation of the constituent with a lower surface tension. Nevertheless, the calculated results of the Ag-Cu alloys with the present model were in good agreement with the experimental data within a difference of 10%.

Transformation behavior and shape memory characteristics of Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xCr (x=0.5-2.0) alloys have been investigated by means of electrical resistivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and thermal cycling tests under constant load. Two-stage B2-B19-B19' transformation occurred in Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xCr alloys. The B2-B19 transformation was separated clearly from the B19-B19' transformation in Ti-44.0Ni-5Cu-1.0Cr and Ti-43.5Ni-5Cu-1.5Cr alloys. A temperature range where the B19 martensite exists was expanded with increasing Cr content because decreasing rate of Ms (85 K / % Cr) was larger than that of Ms' (17 K / % Cr). Ti-(45-x)Ni-5Cu-xCr alloys were deformed in plastic manner with a fracture strain of 68% ~ 43% depending on Cr content. Substitution of Cr for Ni improves the critical stress for slip deformation in a Ti-45Ni-5Cu alloy due to solid solution hardening.
In the present study, the electrical sliding wear and corrosion resistance of pure copper (Cu) and six age-hardened copper alloys (CuCr, CuZr, CuCrZr, CuNiSiCr, CuBe and CuBeNi) were investigated by a pin-on-disc tribometer and electrochemical measurement. Various copper-based alloys in the form of cylindrical pin were forced to slide against a counterface stainless steel disc in air under unlubricated condition at a sliding velocity of 31 km/h under normal load up to 20 N with and without electric current. The worn surface of and wear debris from the specimens were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Both mechanical wear and electrical arc erosion were the wear mechanisms for the alloys worn at 50 A. Owing to its good electrical conductivity, high wear and corrosion resistance, CuCrZr is a promising candidate as the overhead catenary material for electric traction systems.
The effects of Cu and Fe additions on the thermal stability, microstructure and mechanical properties of $Al_{85}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5},\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5}Cu_1,\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Fe_1$ alloys, manufactured by gas atomization, degassing and hot-extrusion were investigated. Gas atomization, with a wide super-cooled liquid region, allowed the alloy powders to exhibit varying microstructure depending primarily on the powder size and composition. Al hotextruded alloys consisted of homogeneously-distributed fine-grained fcc-Al matrix and intermetallic compounds. A substitution of 1 at.% Al by Cu increased the thermal stability of the amorphous phase and produced alloy microstructure with smaller fcc-Al grains. On the other hand, the same substitution of 1 at.% Al by Fe decreased the stability of the amorphous phase and produced larger fcc-Al grains. The formation of intermetallic compounds such as $Al_3Ni,\;Al_{11}Ce_3\;and\;Al_{11}La_3$ was suppressed by the addition of Cu or Fe. Among the three alloys examined, the highest Vickers hardness and compressive strength were obtained for $Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Cu_1$ alloy, and related to the finest fcc-Al grain size attained from increased thermal stability with Cu addition.
