A nonlinear numerical analysis of orientation and velocity fields of the full Ericksen-Leslie theory for a nematic liquid crystal under shear flow is given. We obtained for the first time the three-dimensional orientation and two component velocity profiles evolutions for both in- and out-of-shear plane orientation anchorings. Complex evolution routes to steady state were found even for shear aligning nematic. As the Ericksen number increases monotonic evolution of velocity and orientation shifts towards multi-region nucleating director rotation growth with complex secondary flow generations. We found that contrary to the in-shear-plane anchorings like homeotropic or parallel anchorings, binormal anchoring gives rise to substantial non-planar three-dimensional orientation with nonzero secondary flow.
Morphological control on hydroxyapatite crystals has attractive prospects in research to clarify the effects of crystal planes on biological performance. Hydrothermal processing is known as a typical type of processing for fabricating well-grown crystals with unique morphology. The purpose of the present study is to examine the feasibility of well-crystallized crystals with oriented structures through hydrothermal treatment of calcite. A single crystal of calcite was applied to hydrothermal treatment in a phosphate solution at $160^{\circ}C$. Rod-shaped hydroxyapatite crystals with micrometer-size were formed on the {100} face of calcite after treatment, while nanometer-sized hydroxyapatite crystals were formed on the (111). The hydroxyapatite crystals formed on each plane were not morphologically changed with increasing treatment periods. An oriented structure of rod-shaped hydroxyapatite was constructed after hydrothermal treatment of {100} planes on the calcite single, while such orientation was not observed on the (111) plane after the treatment. The layer of hydroxyapatite formed on the {100} plane was thicker than that of the (111) plane. The {100} plane of calcite shows a higher reactivity than that of the (111) plane, which results in rapid crystal growth of hydroxyapatite. The difference in the morphology of the formed hydroxyapatite was governed by the reactivity of each crystal plane exposed to the surrounding solution.

To observe the orientation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in nematic liquid crystal (NLC), CNT-doped homogeneously-aligned NLC cells driven by in-plane field was fabricated. The CNTs were aligned with a LC director in the initial state, whereas the CNTs disturbed the LC director above critical ac field. We observed motional textures in the form of vertical stripes in the local area between electrodes, which were associated with a deformation of the LC director orientation. This suggests that CNTs start to vibrate three dimensionally with translational motion. The hysteresis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance under dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNT.

We report on the effect of additives on the microstructure and corrosion properties of electrodeposited Cu films. Copper films were fabricated by electrodeposition on various concentrations of gelatin in a copper sulfate electrolyte. The surface morphologies of the Cu films were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and crystal orientation of the Cu films was analyzed by X-ray diffraction measurement. (220) plane was the dominant orientation when the films were fabricated at ambient temperature, decreasing in dominance with addition of gelatin. On the other hand, (111) plane-Cu films were preferentially grown at $40^{\circ}C$, and were also diminished with adding additives. Corrosion rate measurements using the Tafel extrapolation method based on corrosion potential and current reveal the effect of additives on corrosion behavior. Corrosion behavior was found to be strongly related to the orientation of the films. Consequently, additives like gelatin influence crystal orientation of the films, and if a less dense crystal plane, e.g. (220), is preferentially oriented during electrodeposition, a lower corrosion rate could be produced, since the plane shows a lower current density.

To elucidate the liquid crystal(LC) molecules alignment mechanism, it is important to determine the molecular orientation of the rubbed polymer surface molecules that directly contact with LC molecules. In this work, the molecular orientation on a rubbed surface of polyimide (SE-3310, Nissan) film has been studied by polarized FTIR absorption spectroscopy. It has been found that molecular chain on the rubbed surface of polymide film are oriented along the rubbing direction and are tilted up on an average by 5.0$^{\circ}$. In the SHG(Second Harmonic Generation) measurement, the pretilt angle of molecular chain on the poylmide fim was 4.6$^{\circ}$ fro, the surface plane. And the pedit angle of liquid crystal (ZLI-2293, Merck) molecules measured by crystal rotation method was 5.4$^{\circ}$in the same rubbing condition.
To understand effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on electro-optic characteristic and orientation of the LC, we CNT-doped homogeneously-aligned NLC cells driven by in-plane field have been fabricated. The CNTs were aligned with a LC director from the initial state to below critical ac field, whereas the CNTs disturbed the LC director field above critical ac field. We observed motional textures in the form of vertical stripes in the local area between electrodes, which were associated with a deformation of the LC director orientation. This indicates that CNTs start vibrating three dimensionally with translational motion. Further, the hysterisis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance under dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc, which is related to image sticking problem in liquid crystal displays, is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNTS while keeping operating voltage and response time about the same compared to the un-doped LC cell.

The texture of vapor deposits(PVD and CVD) changes from the orientation that places the lowest energy lattice plane parallel to the substrate under the condition of low atom or ion concentration adjacent to the deposit, to the orientation that places the higher energy crystal planes parallel to the substrate as the atom or ion concentration adjacent to the deposit increases. However, in the early stage of deposition, the deposit-substrate interface energy and the surface energy constitute the most important energies of the system. Therefore, if the lattice match is established between the substrate and the deposit without generating much strain energy, the epitaxial growth takes place to reduce the interfacial energy. When the epitaxial growth does not take place, the surface energy is dominant in the early stage of deposition and the lowest energy crystal plane tends to be placed parallel to the substrate up to a critial thickness. The thickness depends on the deposition condition. If the deposition condition does not favor placing the lowest energy crystal plane parallel to the substrate, the initial texture will change to that compatible with the deposition condition as the film thickness increases, and the texture turnover thickness will be short. The microstructure and surface topography of deposits are related to their texture.

Gallium oxide (Ga2O3) thin films were grown on c-, a-, m-, r-plane sapphire substrates using a mist chemical vapor deposition system. Various growth temperature range of 400~600℃ was applied for Ga2O3 thin film deposition. Then, several structural properties were characterized such as film thickness, crystal phase, lattice orientation, surface roughness, and optical bandgap. Under the certain growth temperature of 500℃, all grown Ga2O3 featured rhombohedral crystal structures and well-aligned preferred orientation to sapphire substrate. The films grown on c-and r-plane sapphire substrates, showed low surface roughness and large optical bandgap compared to those on a-and m-plane substrates. Therefore, various sapphire orientation can be potentially applicable for future Ga2O3-based electronics applications.

Epitaxial $CuCrO_2$ thin films have been grown on single crystal substrate of c-plane $Al_2O_3$, $SrTiO_3$, YSZ and Quarts by laser ablation of a $CuCrO_2$ target using 266nm radiation from a Nd:YAG laser. X-ray measurements indicate that the $CuCrO_2$ grows epitaxially on all substrate, with its orientation dependent on the kinds of substrates. Most of the layer were polycrystalline with (001), (015) and random as the dominant surface orientation on c-plane YSZ, $SrTiO_3$ and quarts substrate, respectively. (001) orientated $CuCrO_2$ grows on C-plane $Al_2O_3$ and YSZ substrate, (015) orientated $CuCrO_2$ films are found on c-plane $SrTiO_3$ substrate and random orientated $CuCrO_2$ films grows on quarts substrate. These data are compared with the in-plane orientation and the mismatch of the $CuCrO_2$ and each substrate lattices in an attempt to relate the preferred orientation to the plane of the sapphire on which it is grown. Further characterization show that the grain size of the films increases for a substrate temperature increase, whereas the electrical properties of $CuCrO_2$ thin films depend upon their crystalline orientation.

The development of deformation texture in FCC polycystalline metals during rolling was simulated by the finite element analysis using a large-deformation, elaatic-plastic, rate-dependent polycrystalline model of crystal plasticity. Different plastic anisotropy due to different orientation of each crystal makes inhomogeneous deformation. Assuming plane strain compression condition, the simulation with a high rate sensitivity resulted in main component change from Dillamore at low rate sensitivity to Brass component.
