  • Basaltic fiber was prepared by continuous spinning process from Jeju Pyosun raw basalt materials. First, for confirming the melting characterization of basalt, basalt raw material put into Pt crucible and melted up to $1550^{\circ}C$ then quenched by dropping it into water. After quenching, the optimum fiber spinning conditions were investigated by measurement and analysis of XRD, TMA, high temperature viscosity, high temperature conductivity and high temperature microscope. The optimum spinning temperature and viscosity for preparation of continuous filament fiber were $1264^{\circ}C$ and $10^{2.8}$ poise at $1264^{\circ}C$, respectively. Properties of prepared spinning fiber were confirmed by tensile strength, FE-SEM, heat resisting test and others. The tensile strength of fiber prepared by spinning conditions of the bushing temperature $1240^{\circ}C$ and winder speed 4600rpm was 3660MPa.

  • Effects of $CaCN_2$ addition on the grain refinement in the AM60 magnesium ingots were investigated. The effects of the $CaCN_2$ are estimated with different inoculation temperatures, inoculation contents, and holding time to find out the optimum condition. AM60 alloy was melted in the low carbon steel crucible by cylindrical electric furnace under an argon atmosphere. The melting and casting apparatus is specially designed for magnesium alloys. The grain size of AM60 magnesium alloy decreased significantly with an increase in $CaCN_2$ content and, at 0.8 wt% $CaCN_2$ or more, grain size becomes constant at about $85 {\mu}m$. The optimum condition was obtained in the 0.8 wt% $CaCN_2$ for holding molten metal of 30 min. at the temperature of $710^{\circ}C$. The tensile properties of AM60 magnesium alloys were improved due to grain refinement by addition of $CaCN_2$. In the optimum condition, the yield strength, tensile strength and elongation were ${\sigma}_{0.2}=107 MPa$, ${\sigma}_{T.S}=234 MPa$ and e=14.2%. The variation of stress with strain obeyed the relationship of the ${\sigma}=K{\varepsilon}^n$. The strain-hardening exponent, n and strength coefficient, K obtained in the 0.8 wt% $CaCN_2$ added AM 60 magnesium alloy were n=0.21 and K=390 MPa.

  • In addition, because it uses preheating to dissolve an alloy in general, it is hard to regulate the appropriate melting temperature of the alloy and brewing time and shows the defect of the supplementation thing due to the super-heating. Once the alloy is molten and then most of the casting by attaching a sight glass or non-contact temperature sensor is suitable casting temperature the operator pressing a button to generate a centrifugal force to inject the molten alloy into a crucible in the casting ring. These results, and most of the cast temperature is too high or too low to generate a lot of casting defects do not get into a uniform cast body. In this paper, we developed a dental casting machine for high frequency using a single temperature sensor which can measure the actual temperature of the alloy than the temperature of the external non-contact measurement using a temperature sensor.

  • Nano-sized $Y_2O_3$ powders were prepared via a sol-gel method starting with $Y(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ (Yttrium(III) nitrate hexahydrate) and water with ethanol as a cosolvent. $Y_2O_3$ is an important rare earth oxide and has been considered for use in nuclear applications, such as ceramic materials, due to its excellent optical and refractory characteristics. It has been used as a chemically stable substrate, a crucible material for melting reactive metals, and a nozzle material for jet casting molten rare earth-iron magnetic alloys. Oxalic acid ($C_2H_2O_4$) has been adopted as a chelating agent in order to control the rate of hydrolysis and polycondensation, and ammonia was added in order to adjust the base condition. The synthesized $Y_2O_3$ powder was characterized using TG/DTA, XRD, FE-SEM, BET and Impedance Analyzer analyses. The powder changed its properties in accordance with the pH conditions of the catalyst. As the pH increases according to the FE-SEM, the grain grew and it showed that the pore size decreased while confirming the effect of the grain size. The nano-material $Y_2O_3$ powders demonstrated that the surface area was improved with the addition of oxalic acid with ammonium hydroxide.

  • Silicon (Si) wafer was grown by using direct growth from Si melt and contaminations of wafer during the process were investigated. In our process, BN was coated inside of all graphite parts including crucible in system to prevent carbon contamination. In addition, coated BN layer enhance the wettability, which ensures the favorable shape of grown wafer by proper flow of Si melt in casting mold. As a result, polycrystalline silicon wafer with dimension of $156{\times}156$ mm and thickness of $300{\pm}20$ um was successively obtained. There were, however, severe contaminations such as BN and SiC on surface of the as-grown wafer. While BN powders were easily removed by brushing surface, SiC could not be eliminated. As a result of BN analysis, C source for SiC was from binder contained in BN slurry. Therefore, to eliminate those C sources, additional flushing process was carried out before Si was melted. By adding 3-times flushing processes, SiC was not detected on the surface of as-grown Si wafer. Polycrystalline Si wafer directly grown from Si melt in this study can be applied for the cost-effective Si solar cells.

  • [$Bi_2Sr_2Ca_1Cu_2O_x$](BSCCO 2212) tubes were fabricated by centrifugal melting process(CMP). BSCCO 2212 powder was melted in a Pt crucible and solidified in a rotating steel mold. The BSCCO 2212 tube samples separated from steel mold were heat-treated at $800^{\circ}C\;and\;810^{\circ}C$ in oxygen flow. The critical current($I_c$) of the samples was measured by transport measurement at 77K, and the microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscope. The $J_c$ at 77K of the tubes heated treated at $800^{\circ}C\;and\;810^{\circ}C$ were 197 and 240 $A/cm^2$, respectively. It was observed that the plate like grains in BSCCO 2212 tube was more developed in the sample heat treated at $810^{\circ}C\;and\;800^{\circ}C$ heated tube. It is found that the critical current($I_c$) of the BSCCO 2212 sample was dependent on the heating schedule regarding the growth of the BSCCO 2212 grains.

  • Oxygen segregation in horizontal-magnetic-field-applied Czochralski (HMCZ) silicon crystals has been studied as a function of magnetic field strength (B) and crucible rotation rate (C). Along the axis of 57mm din. <100> crystals grown under B=2, 3, 4 kG and C=4-15rpm, the oxygen distribution was usually saw-tooth shaped and fluctuated unevenly. Compared to the conventional CZ method, this result seems to indicate that the horizontal magnetic field, at levels used in the present experiment, had a destabilizing influence on oxygen transport to the growth interface. On the other hand, as C increased, the oxygen fluctuation lessened, and [0] increased overall. At B=2 kG, an oxygen profile in a level of 27-36 ppma was achieved by a programmed ramp of C. Oxygen precipitation behavior of the HMCZ silicon during a simulated device manufacturing process was compared and found to be inferior to that of typical CZ silicon. The uneven oxygen profile in the as-grown state was identified as the major source of poor precipitation uniformity in the HMCZ silicon.

  • The electrical conductivity of glass melter at high temperature has been measured. The conductivity is an important physical property for the research and the manufacturing process of glass. Because high temperature is an inconvenient situation to measure the conductivity of glass melter, we have made a platinum crucible and electrode and have measured the conductivity at high temperature. KCl solution, of which concentration is adjusted to the conductivity of glass melter, is used to get parameters of the conductivity cell. A measuring circuit is composed with an AC 1 kHz sine wave generator and an operational amplifier. The cell constants are determined from the measured voltages and the equivalent conductances of KCl solution. Various cells are tested to find a suitable shape for high temperature experiment. The results are compared by cell size, electrode depth, and cell configuration. The conductivity of the borosilicate melter is $0.053{\Omega}^{-1}cm^{-1}$ at $1,450^{\circ}C$.
