  • In this paper, an adaptive cross-layer resource allocation algorithm for the downlink multi-user OFDM system is proposed. The proposed algorithm does not only concern the wireless characteristics of physical (PHY) layer, but also pays attention to the user's quality of service (QoS) requirement, fairness, and packet queue state information of medium access control (MAC) layer. The algorithm is composed of two parts: one is to decide the priority of the user, and the other is to assign the radio resource according to its priority. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has both steady QoS and low computation complexity, even though the mobile users have different receiving signal to noise ratio (SNR).

  • Mobile Ad Hoc Networks(MANETs) consists of mobile nodes which communicate with each other without any centralized infrastructure. Message broadcasting by flooding for route discovery in MANET can result in high redundant retransmission, contention and collision of broadcasting packet, known as the broadcast storm problem collectively. The cross-layer design is adopted in this paper, which lets routing layer share the received signal strength information at MAC layer. Also this paper proposes a new probabilistic approach that dynamically adjusts the rebroadcasting probability of a node for routing request packets (RREQs) according to the received signal strength. The simulation results show that the proposed approach demonstrates better performance than blind flooding, fixed probabilistic broadcasting approaches.

  • Nowadays, wireless packet data services are provided over Wireless MAN (WMAN) at a high data service rate, while 3G cellular networks provide wide-area coverage at a low data service rate. The integration of mobile WiMAX and 3G networks is essential, to serve users requiring both high-speed wireless access as well as wide-area connectivity. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer optimization scheme for a vertical handover between mobile WiMAX and 3G cellular networks. More specifically, L2 (layer 2) and L3 (layer 3) signaling messages for a vertical handover are analyzed and reordered/combined, to optimize the handover procedure. Extensive simulations using ns-2 demonstrate that the proposed scheme enhances the performance of a vertical handover between mobile WiMAX and 3G networks: low handover latency, high TCP throughput, and low UDP packet loss ratio.

  • This paper surveys the EBP(Error Back Propagation) learning, the Cross Entropy function and the LBL(Layer By Layer) learning, which are used for learning the MLP(Multi Layer Perceptrons). We compare the merits and demerits of each learning method in the handwritten digit recognition. Although the speed of EBP learning is slower than other learning methods in the initial learning process, its generalization capability is better. Also, the speed of Cross Entropy function that makes up for the weak points of EBP learning is faster than that of EBP learning. But its generalization capability is worse because the error signal of the output layer trains the target vector linearly. The speed of LBL learning is the fastest speed among the other learning methods in the initial learning process. However, it can't train for more after a certain time, it has the lowest generalization capability. Therefore, this paper proposes the standard of selecting the learning method when we apply the MLP.

  • Snoop protocol is one of the efficient schemes to compensate TCP packet loss and enhance TCP throughput in wired-cum-wireless networks. However, Snoop protocol has a problem: it cannot perform local retransmission efficiently under the bursty-error prone wireless link. To solve this problem, SACK-Aware-Snoop and SNACK mechanism have been proposed. These approaches improve the performance by using SACK option field between base station and mobile host. However in the wireless channel with high packet loss rate, SACK-Aware-Snoop and SNACK mechanism do not work well because of two reason: (a) end-to-end performance is degraded because duplicate ACKs themself can be lost in the presence of bursty error, (b) energy of mobile device and bandwidth utilization in the wireless link are wasted unnecessarily because of SACK option field in the wireless link. In this paper, we propose a new local retransmission scheme based on Cross-layer approach, called Cross-layer Snoop(C-Snoop) protocol, to solve the limitation of previous localized link layer schemes. C-Snoop protocol includes caching lost TCP data and performing local retransmission based on a few policies dealing with MAC-layer's timeout and local retransmission timeout. From the simulation result, we could see more improved TCP throughput and energy efficiency than previous mechanisms.

  • This paper presents a simple but efficient scheme incorporating a reputation-based approach and a cross-layer approach, called the SIM scheme, for maintaining reliable connectivity and high performance in ad-hoc wireless networks. The SIM scheme incorporates the following two things: an ad-hoc routing scheme with a reputation-based approach exploiting the game theory concept based on an evolutionarily stable strategy, and a cross-layer approach between the network layer and the transport layer employing a reputation-based approach.

  • Recently, the cross flow turbine attracts more and more attention for its good performance over a large operating regime at off design point. This study adopts a very low head cross flow turbine that has barely been studied before, and investigates the effect of air layer on the performance of the cross flow turbine. As open duct is applied in this study and free surface model is used between the air layer and water, an engineering definition of efficiency, instead of traditional definition of efficiency, is used. As torque at the runner fluctuates up and down at a reasonable limit, statistical method is used. Pressure and water volume fraction contours are shown to present the characteristics of air-water flow. With constant air suction in the runner chamber, the water level gradually drops below the runner and efficiency of the turbine can be raised by 10 percent. All considered, the effect of air layer on the performance of turbine is considerable.

  • Each layer operates independently in the present network structure. However, the importance of designing cross layer, which adapt between different layers, is on the rise, because of adapt to the variable communication environments. In this paper, we investigate the scheduling techniques of the cross layer. we research conventional scheduling methods and propose the multimedia service scheduling method which will be applied in future wireless communication environments. This method considers the diversity of multimedia service and manages the radio resources efficiently Moreover, we apply AMC for flexibility and improve the performance of the scheduling method. The proposed method is verified through the simulation appying variable environments.

  • TFRC(TCP-Friendly Rate Control) has a performance degradation in wireless networks because it performs congestion control by judging all the losses occurred in wireless networks as a congestion indicator. It is also degraded by the increased Round Trip Time(RTT) due to packet retransmission and contention overhead in the link layer. In this paper, we propose an adaptive rate control scheme based on cross-layer to improve the quality of streaming services in the wireless networks. It provides new RTT estimation and loss discrimination methods to improve transmission rate of TFRC. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can improve the performance of TFRC.
