  • This paper explains how the basic and instinctive emotion "joy" is verbally expressed in Russian and Korean. In particular, the main concern of this pater is on the cultural context with which the emotion "joy" is related and the ways in which the emotion "joy" has a wide range of uses. The semantic and pragmatic characteristics of the uses of the expression "joy" can be explained through the cultural and historical backgrounds in both languages. In Russian, joy has two variants, radost' and udovol'stvie. It is very difficult to distinguish a significant difference between them; however, the former is mainly connected with more mental, spiritual, cultural, and religious contexts, whereas the latter is mainly related with more concrete, instantaneous contexts and daily life. The former produces an impression that has a more wide, spiritual, and macroscopic attitude toward a situation, whereas the latter produces an impression that has a microscopic and instantaneous attitude toward a situation. Compared with the Russian expressions, the Korean equivalents, 기쁨 and 즐거움, have a very similar opposition like that of the Russian. The former is based on a more logical and causal relation between an anticipation or desire and the current situations, whereas the latter is based on the participation of speakers in a situation and has a very instantaneous characteristic, like a udovol'stvie in Russian. Thus, it can be reasonable argued that the Russian udovol'stvie and the Korean 즐거움 share many similar semantic properties. In brief summary, in both languages there exists two distinctive variants that show a privative opposition to express the emotional concept of joy.

  • Characteristics of the Listening and Pronunciation of Korean Obstruents of Chinese Learners -Based on the Phonetic Experiments Using Kalvin and Praat- This study aims at investigating the characteristics of confrontation in three ways, lax/ fortis/ aspirated consonants, in Korean obstruents through experimental phonetic analysis for the Chinese Korean language learners. On one hand, as a result of comparing Korean and Chinese obstruent systems, there is no big difference regarding the articulatory location. On the other hand, in regards to the articulatory method there is a difference. In a Korean obstruent system, the confrontation presented in three ways by the strength of aspiration. On the contrary, the Chinese obstruent system showed confrontation in two ways by the existence of aspiration. To examine the difficulty of the learners caused by the above-mentioned reason objectively, this paper studied the relationship between input and output of sound through the experimental phonetic analysis such as Kalvin and Praat. To research the input of sound, the listening ability of the learners was examined by 'Choosing Consonant' among the Menu of Kalvin. As a result of that experiment, many errors were shown. They recognized the fortis as lax in the area of affricates and plosives. In the area of fricatives, they recognized affricatives as fricatives. To investigate the output of sound, the section of aspiration and the section of friction of a plosive, an affricate and a fricative in Praat, were expressed numerically. The learners' VOT of lax and affricate represented that lax was pronounced close to the fortis, and the VOT of fricatives was not shown the section of aspiration and friction clearly, and also the result showed that they pronounced a fricative like affricative-aspirated one. The result shows that the learners' pronunciation is related to the listening ability. The consequence is caused by the characteristics of the difference between Korean obstruents and Chinese ones. If the training pronunciation is conducted based on above result, it would be a better methodology in teaching Korean.

  • It is thought as more important for us to understand foreign countrie's culture in the modern society. because the world is becoming closer day by day thiough the develepment of communication and mass-media. Cross-cultural study could play a role to give an opportunity for people to understand foreign countrie’s culture easily. In this respect, this study was planned to find out similarity and difference between Danish and Korean folk tables made and used before the 20th century during the 18th-l9th century as a part of the comparative study of folk furniture between the two countries. It would be very interesting if we could find something valuable between Danish and Korean folk furniture. because they are located very far away each other geographically with less cultural communication before. There were more differences than similarity between the folk tables of the two countries and major findings were as followings : Firstly, there were many kinds of space-saving tables in Denmark. whereas only a few kinds of tables which could be removed easily after their usage were found in KoreaSecondly, Banish folk tables were more emphasized on the function rather than decoration. Whereas Korean folk tables were smaller lower and more decorative than Danish ones to fit their life-style of sitting on the floor.Thirdly, many Danish folk tables were made of bare wood. while Korean ones were finished by transparent lacquer or vegetable oil. Stone tops if tables were rare in both countries. Lastly. there were common factors in the design of legs of folk tables in both countries. It was interesting that animal legs such as deg tiger cat. lion, and eagle were used for design motif of the table legs. But trestle leg, cross leg and gate leg were not found in Korean folk tables. As a conclusion, throughout this study, it became obvious that life-style was one of the most important factor influencing on the design of furniture.

  • This study is aimed to compare cross-cultural individualism, and consider an influence of nationality, gender and age on individualistic propensity. The survey data include 271 Chinese, 251 Japanese, 262 Netherlander and 267 Korean. The result of factor analysis, four factors named independent action, profit and opinion, indifference on other and will, were found out. The result of comparison on nationality, Netherlander and Japanese has a strong individualistic propensity, and Korean has a remarkable collective propensity. Chinese were middle grade among 4 countries. It can be said that certain factors correlated with a certain country, because Netherlander's answer on questions belonged to profit and opinion factor were highest, and Japanese's one belonged to indifference on other were highest. On gender, Man was more individualistic better than woman. On age, twenties has strong collective propensity better than other age groups. The number of significant difference on comparison among countries is 21 in 21 questions, but the number on gender or age is 6 or 7. Therefore, it can be said that nationality (or culture) is most useful variable to grasp individualism.

  • As firms increase their operations in the international arena, there is a growing need for managers to understand cross-cultural issues in adopting information systems(IS). The present study surveyed IS developers with respect to their perceptions on the importance of various criteria for successful development of information systems. The results indicated that developers perceive criteria related to the organizational and systems level to be more important than criteria on the strategic and user level. In addition, the developers perceive immediate/direct criteria as more important that indirect/long term criteria. The current study found little differences between developers working for innovative versus those working for non-innovative companies with respect to their views on the importance of various success criteria. There were also very little differences in the perceptions of IS developers at different hierarchical ranks.

  • This study examined the actual reconstruction drawing, composite mineral, particle size and property test, fine organic matters, color differences and main ingredients of the earthen mold excavated in Dongcheon-dong, Gyungju. The cross-section of the inner mold and outer mold divides into inside (1st layer) and outside (2nd layer), with organic matters mixed outside. The cross-section has been altered due to heat and form removal agent. X-ray analysis revealed that the layer was made of minerals with high transmissivity and only quartz particles were observed through a polarizing microscope. The inside of cross-section in SEM observation identified enlarged air gap, with crack developed in the center, but no changes observed on the outside. The particle size of the composites is almost the same for the inner mold and outer mold and is silt clay loam. The ratio between silt clay and silt clay loam was about 2.7:1 and 2.9:1 respectively. In the property test, the density and absorption rate of inner mold and outer mold were similar, but porosity was different, with inner mold of 27.36% and outer mold of 31.09%. The color difference of cross-section seems to have been caused by the spread of soot on the 1st layer surface for removal of form or by the covering of ink to protect the 1st layer. Composite mineral analysis revealed the same composition for the inner mold and outer mold, except for the magnetite that was detected in the inner mold alone. As for the main ingredient analysis, the average content of $SiO_2$ was 71.64% and that of $Al_2O_3$ was 14.59%. As for the sub-ingredients, $Fe_2O_3$ was 4.51%, $K_2O$ 3.06%, $Na_2O$, MgO, CaO, $TiO_2$, $P_2O_5$ and MnO was less than 2%.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cultural difference between eastern and western culture in the online community in view of Hofstede dimensions of national culture through social network analysis. And this study tries to interpret the cultural dimensions by using social network indexes. The results show every cultural dimension offered conflicting results except uncertainty avoidance. The eastern culture shows individualism, and low power distance compared to western culture in the online community. Moreover the communication speed of eastern culture is faster than western culture. But eastern culture shows high uncertainty avoidance in the online community similar to an offline culture. This results of this study show that because of certain differences between the offline and online culture, the typical framework we use to analyze offline culture should not be applied to analyze online culture. Therefore we believe that the most important contribution of this study should be related with the finding that we need very different approach to be able to correctly understand the prevalent culture in the online community than the one that we use in the offline community.

  • Narcissism is a pathological phenomenon and narcissistic subject always needs to put itself on the top and has interest in nothing but its own determination. The protagonist of Adversary by ?mmanuel Carr?re does pay careful attention to what others are thinking of him while he does not distinguish difference between object of love and himself. So he can be allegedly narcissistic subject. And it can be said that the behaviors of Mary in the movie Under the sand by Ozon are included in narcissism in that narcissistic subject has the characteristics that idealizes the object of libido. However, in this study, the heroine is examined based on such a point that the object of love and extreme idealization incline toward others. We call this case reverse-narcissism. In Part 2, it is investigated what relation narcissism as an unconscious psychological tool has with Oedipus complex, which plays an important role in forming human psyche. For instance, disappointment caused by prohibition at the oedipal stage is too severe, which creates superego and its idealization to protect in such a way that narcissistic regression can not be done. Cases of extremely big gap between ego and ideal type are perversion, impostor, mania, paranoia, etc, where narcissistic and oedipal elements are combined to affect.

  • This study aims to uncover the learner's language proficiency shown in the writing data of Chinese elementary/intermediate level learners. Language proficiency of the learners acquired by error analysis provides only partial information, and thus this study analyses the interlanguage of Korean learners in terms of 'Mean Length of Utterance, MLU' to discover the overall aspect of learner's language proficiency more symmetrically. The analysis of vocabulary area is to be enforced after generally studying the learner's language development aspect in accordance with MLU-m(orpheme) and MLU-(w)ord found in compositions by Chinese speaking Korean language learners. In terms of MLU, it has been slightly increased as the level of proficiency between elementary level and intermediate level learners; however, the morpheme seemed to be difficult to use, since the difference between Chinese learners and Korean university students has been notably shown. Vocabulary diversity, using aspect for each word class, and using aspect of the predicate are studied for vocabulary area; more various and numerous vocabulary tend to be used as the level of proficiency increases. In terms of predicate use, Chinese learners use less numerous vocabulary types.

  • This study analyzed temperament of ethnic Korean children residing in Korea comparing them with Korean children and American children residing in the USA. Parents of 169 Korean, Korean-American and American 4-7-year-old children rated them on the Very Short Form of Children's Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ; Rothbart et al., 2001). On most subscales, Korean children were reported higher than ethnic Korean children in the US while Korean-American children were rated lower than others. Attention focusing was influenced by macro systems; shifting and impulsivity were more sensitive to biological or micro systems. The bilingual setting of Korean-American children may explain the difference in control of this group from others. This study clearly showed that ecological settings play important roles in temperament.
