  • The performance of an acoustic transducer is determined by the effects of many design variables. and mostly the influences of these design variables are not linearly independent of each other To achieve the optimal performance of an acoustic transducer, we must consider the cross-coupled effects of the design variables. In this study with the FEM. we analyzed the variation of the resonance frequency and sound pressure of a flextensional transducer in relation to Its design variables. Through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, we derived functional forms of the resonance frequency and sound pressure in terms of the design variables, and with which we determined the optimal structure of the transducer by means of a constrained optimization technique, SQP-PD. The proposed method can reflect all the cross-coupled effects of multiple design variables, and can be utilized to the design of general acoustic transducers.

  • Wind tunnel aeroelastic model tests of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council (CAARC) standard tall building were conducted using a three-degree-of-freedom base hinged aeroelastic(BHA) model. Experimental investigation into the effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, cross-wind/torsional frequency ratio and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness on the wind-induced response characteristics and wind excitation mechanisms was carried out. The wind tunnel test results highlight the significant effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness, on both the normalised along-wind and cross-wind acceleration responses for reduced wind velocities ranging from 4 to 20. Coupled translational-torsional motion and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness also have significant impacts on the amplitude-dependent effect caused by the vortex resonant process, and the transfer of vibrational energy between the along-wind and cross-wind directions. These resulted in either an increase or decrease of each response component, in particular at reduced wind velocities close to a critical value of 10. In addition, the contribution of vibrational energy from the torsional motion to the cross-wind response of the building model can be greatly amplified by the effect of resonance between the vortex shedding frequency and the torsional natural frequency of the building model.

  • Cross-talk effects in high-density volume holographic interconnections are investigated using perturbative iteration method of the integral form of Maxwell's wave equation. In this method, the paraxial approximation and negligence of backward scattering introduced in conventional coupled mode theory is not assumed. Interaction geometries consisting of non-coplanar light waves and multiple index gratings are studied. Arbitrary light polarization is considered. Systematic analysis of cross-talk effects due to multiple index gratings is performed in increasing level of diffraction orders corresponding to successive iterations. Some numerical examples are given for first and third order diffraction.

  • In this paper, Cross-Coupled Controller proposed for multi axes servo system. Tracking error and contouring error exist when a machine tool moves along the trajectory in multi exes system. The proposed scheme enhances the contouring performance by reducing contour error. Feedforward compensator reduces the effects of a nonlinear disturbance such as friction or dead zone. The proposed control scheme reduces the contour error which occured when the tool tracks the reference trajectory. Simulation results show that this scheme improves the contouring performance along the reference trajectory in XY-table.

  • The cross-section warping due to the passage of high-speed trains can be a relevant issue to consider in the dynamic analysis of bridges due to (i) the usual layout of railway systems, resulting in eccentric moving loads; and (ii) the use of cross-sections prone to warping deformations. A thin-walled beam formulation for the dynamic analysis of bridges including the cross section warping is presented in this paper. Towards a numerical implementation of the beam formulation, a finite element with seven degrees of freedom is proposed. In order to easily consider the compatibility between elements, and since the coupling between flexural and torsional effects occurs in non-symmetric cross-sections due to dynamic effects, a single axis is considered for the element. The coupled flexural-torsional free vibration of thin-walled beams is analysed through the presented beam model, comparing the results with analytical solutions presented in the literature. The dynamic analysis due to an eccentric moving load, which results in a coupled flexural-torsional vibration, is considered in the literature by analytical solutions, being therefore of a limited applicability in practice engineering. In this paper, the dynamic response due to an eccentric moving load is obtained from the proposed finite element beam model that includes warping by a modal analysis.

  • The spatially coupled buckling, in-plane, and lateral bucking analyses of thin-walled Timoshenko curved beam with non-symmetric, double-, and mono-symmetric cross-sections resting on elastic foundation are performed based on series solutions. The stiffness matrices are derived rigorously using the homogeneous form of the simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The present beam formulation includes the mechanical characteristics such as the non-symmetric cross-section, the thickness-curvature effect, the shear effects due to bending and restrained warping, the second-order terms of semitangential rotation, the Wagner effect, and the foundation effects. The equilibrium equations and force-deformation relationships are derived from the energy principle and expressions for displacement parameters are derived based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally the element stiffness matrix is determined using force-deformation relationships. In order to verify the accuracy and validity of this study, the numerical solutions by the proposed method are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the classical isoparametric curved beam elements and other researchers' analytical solutions.

  • In order to saving the energy for HVAC system of buildings, utilization of wind-induced cross ventilation is thought to be promising. However, utilization of natural ventilation alone is not sufficient for maintaining the human thermal-comfort such as in hot and humid regions. A hybrid air conditioning system with a controlled natural ventilation system, or combination of natural ventilation with mechanical air conditioning is thought to overcome the deficiency of wind-driven cross ventilation and to have significant effects on energy reduction. This paper describes a concept of hybrid system and propose a new type of hybrid system using radiational cooling with wind-induced cross ventilation. Moreover, a radiational cooling system is compared with an all-air cooling system. The characteristics of the indoor environment will be examined through CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation, which is coupled with a radiation heat transfer simulation and with HVAC control in which the PMV value for the human model in the center of the room is controlled to attain the target value.

  • Bernoulli-Euler beam theory is used to develop an exact dynamic stiffness matrix for the flexural-torsional coupled motion of a three-dimensional, axially loaded, thin-walled beam of doubly asymmetric cross-section. This is achieved through solution of the differential equations governing the motion of the beam including warping stiffness. The uniform distribution of mass in the member is also accounted for exactly, thus necessitating the solution of a transcendental eigenvalue problem. This is accomplished using the Wittrick-Williams algorithm. Finally, examples are given to confirm the accuracy of the theory presented, together with an assessment of the effects of axial load and loading eccentricity.

  • The optimal structure of the Tonpilz transducer was designed. First, the FE model of the transducer was constructed, that included all the details of the transducer which used practical environment. The validity of the FE model was verified through the impedance analysis of the transducer. Second, the resonance frequency, the sound pressure, the bandwidth, and the impulsive shock pressure of the transducer in relation to its structural variables were analyzed. Third, the design method of $2^n$ experiments was employed to reduce the number of analysis cases, and through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, the functional forms of the transducer performances that could consider the cross-coupled effects of the structural variables were derived. Based on the all results, the optimal geometry of the Tonpilz transducer that had the highest sound pressure level at the desired working environment was determined through the optimization with the SQP-PD method of a target function composed of the transducer performance. Furthermore, for the convenience of a user, the automatic process program making the optimal structure of the acoustic transducer automatically at a given target and a desired working environment was made. The developed method can reflect all the cross-coupled effects of multiple structural variables, and can be extended to the design of general acoustic transducers.

  • This study investigates the simultanceous heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow at the interface. The application of this work is the optimization of falling film evaporators for use in potential hybrid air conditioning systems. The specific geometry considered is liquid TEG films falling along the vertical cooled surfaces of a channel with air in cross flow. The equations to describe the coupled heat and mass transfer between a falling desiccant film and air in cross flow for a falling film evaporator have been presented and solved numerically. The effects of important design and operating variables on the evaporator performance predicted by the parametric numerical analysis and suggestions for performance improvements of the evaporator are presented.
