  • This paper proposes a controller design analysis for three-axis CNC systems considering both contouring and tracking performance. The proposed analysis inclusively combines axial controllers for each individual feed drive system together with cross-coupling controller at the beginning design stage as an integrated manner. These two controllers used to be separately designed and analyzed since they have different control objectives. The proposed scheme includes a stability analysis for the overall control system and a performance analysis in terms of contouring and tracking accuracy. Computer simulation is performed and the results show the validity of the proposed methodology. Further, the results can be used as a basic guideline in systematic and comprehensive controller design for multi-axis CNC systems.

  • In this paper, to evaluate the design properties of 3D optical multimode interference (MMI) couplers with ultracompact width, modal transmission line theory and effective dielectric method are combined with together. A coupling efficiency based on the composed approach is defined, and the coupling length is numerically determined for the design of 3 dB coupler, cross coupler and bar coupler. The simulation result shows that the designed MMI coupler has a low insertion loss and a high splitting ratio.

  • Using disturbance observer is effective to enhance tracking performance of system in the presence of disturbances. Various types of disturbance observers have been proposed to improve sensitivity of systems, but they tend to bring poor transient response due to cross coupling of inter-loops. In this paper, we propose dual disturbance observer(Dual DOB) which is designed to reduce the cross coupling. Dual DOB is consist of an internal DOB and an external DOB, that are designed for different object. The Dual DOB is applied to Optical Disk Drive tracking system. It is shown that the Dual DOB has improved performance over conventional DOB via experimental result. There is good agreement between simulation and experimental results.

  • This study focuses on a high-performance direct active and reactive power controller design that is successfully applicable to three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) AC/DC converters used in renewable distributed energy generation systems. The proposed controller can overcome the sluggish transient dynamic response of conventional controllers to rapid power command changes. Desired active and reactive powers can be thoroughly obtained at the end of each PWM period through a deadbeat solution. The proposed controller achieves an exact nonlinear cross-coupling decoupling of system power without using a predefined switching table or bang/bang hysteresis control. A graphical and analytical analysis that naturally leads to a control voltage vector selection is provided to confirm the finding. The proposed control strategy is evaluated on a 3 kW PWM AC/DC converter in the simulation and experiment.

  • Recently, cross-layer design approach has been greatly attracting researchers' attention as an alternative for improving the performance of wireless data networks. The main reason why cross-layer approaches are particularly well suited for wireless networks is that there exists direct coupling between physical layer and upper layers. Therefore, with cross-layer approach, the protocol designers try to exploit the interaction between layers and promote adaptability at all layers, based on information exchange between layers. In this article we focus on the cross-layer engineering for high data-rate mobile Internet services through cellular networks. First, the general considerations in cross-layer engineering are outlined. Then, we discuss the common approach in literatures, which mainly deals with adaptability in physical and medium access control layer. Finally, we show that the cross-layer engineering taking account of all layers is more adequate for the mobile Internet services cellular network.

  • In this study, abiotic transformation of TNT reduction products via oxidative-coupling reaction was investigated using Mn oxide. In batch experiments, all the reduction products tested were completely transformed by birnessite, one of natural Mn oxides present in soil. Oxidative-coupling was the major transformation pathway, as confirmed by mass spectrometric analysis. Using observed pseudo-first-order rate constants with respect to birnessite loadings, surface area-normalized specific rate constants, $k_{surf}$, were determined. As expected, $k_{surf}$ of diaminonitrotoluenes (DATs) ($1.49{\sim}1.91\;L/m^2{\cdot}day$) are greater about 2 orders than that of dinitroaminotoluenes (DNTs) ($1.15{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}2.09{\times}10^{-2}\;L/m^2{\cdot}day$) due to the increased number of amine group. In addition, by comparing the value of $k_{surf}$ between DNTs or DATs, amino group on ortho position is likely to be more preferred for the oxidation by birnessite. Although cross-coupling of TNT in the presence of various mediator compounds was found not to be feasible, transformation of TNT by reduction using $Fe^0$ followed by oxidative coupling using Mn oxide was efficient, as evaluated by UV-visible spectrometry.

  • In this paper, a synchronization control technique of dual-servo motor driven press system is proposed. An independent cascade PID control technique has been applied to the conventional press system for advancement of control stability. However, it is not easy to reduce synchronous error using the independent cascade PID control technique when some different load disturbances are involved in each motor. The eccentric error of the slide caused by the problem degrade the control performance of the BDC(Bottom Dead Center). In order to achieve reduction of the synchronous error between two servo motors and accurate position control simultaneously, a new control scheme comprised with cascade PID control loop and cross-coupling loop is proposed. In simulation using Matlab SIMULINK, the AC servo system is designed. The control performance of proposed technique is compared with conventional control technique to the model of AC servo system. Also, the sub-scale model of dual-servo motor driven press system which can replicate the slide motion is constructed for experimental verification for the performance of the proposed control technique. The cross-coupling control technique reveals more precise and stable performances in the position and synchronization controls.

  • We present here an efficient and simple method for preparation of highly active Pd heterogeneous catalyst (CNT-Pd), specifically by reaction of dichlorobis(triphenylphosphine)palladium ($Pd(PPh_3)_2Cl_2$) with thiolated carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The as-prepared CNT-Pd catalysts demonstrated an excellent catalytic activity for the carbon-carbon (C-C) cross-coupling reactions (i.e. Suzuki, Stille, and decarboxylative coupling reactions) under mild conditions. The CNT-Pd catalyst could easily be removed from the reaction mixture; additionally, in the decarboxylative coupling of iodobenzene and phenylpropiolic acid, it showed a six-times recyclability, with no loss of activity. Moreover, once its activity had decreased by repeated recycling, it could easily be reactivated by the addition of phosphine ligands. The remarkable recyclability of the decarboxylative coupling reaction is attributable to the high degree of dispersion of Pd catalysts in CNTs. Aggregation of the Pd catalysts is inhibited by their strong adhesion to the thiolated CNTs during the chemical reactions, thereby permitting their recycling.
