  • A new Gomchwi cultivar 'Sammany' was developed by a cross between Gomchwi (Ligularia fischeri (Ledeb.) Turcz.) and Handaeri-gomchwi (Ligularia fischeri var. spiciformis Nakai). Gomchwi is a common Korean name referring wild edible plant species within Ligularia genus. 'Sammany' has purple colored petiole ears and petiole trichome is absent. It has 2nd degree leaf vein density. Plant height, leaf length, leaf width and petiole length were 46.2, 19.1, 19.5 and 32.1 cm, respectively. Plant height was higher than 'Gondalbi'. Bolting occurred in mid. July and it flowered from late August to early September. 'Gondalbi' bolted and flowered 26 days earlier than 'Sammany', and consequently has earlier flowering time more than 26 day. Leaf number of 'Sammany' was 156 per plant but 'Gondalbi' had 130. 'Sammany' had thicker leaves (0.61 mm) compared to 'Gondalbi' (0.46 mm). As a result, yield was higher in 'Sammany (1,077 g/plant)' than 'Gondalbi (798 g/plant)' and leaf hardness was lower in 'Sammany ($20.8kg/cm^2$)' compared to 'Gondalbi ($23.0kg/cm^2$)'. In addition, 'Sammany' was found to be moderately resistant to powdery mildew. With enhanced agronomic and pathology traits, 'Sammany' was newly registered as a new Gomchwi cultivar (variety protection no. 131 on May 2017).

  • The proso millet is vulnerable to lodging due to high plant height and shallow root. A lodging results in a hard mechanical harvesting and yield loss. One of solutions on this problem is inhibition of internode elongation. The objective of this study was to set up use time and dose of prohexadium-calcium, is growth inhibitor. The experimental variety was Ibaekchal. The experiment design was a split-plot design with three replications. The treatments were as follow: Main-plots were 25 and 35 day after sowing(DAS) as use time and sub-plots were 0%, 50%, 100%(diluted solution of 1000 times, $1000{\ell}\;ha^{-1}$), 150% as dose. The amount of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilization were 90, 70, $80kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. The size of high ridge and plant spacing were $90{\times}30cm$ and $60{\times}15cm$, respectively. Proso millet was sown on June 9, 2016 by hands and was adjusted at 2 plant per hill. The growth survey of vegetative growth stage was conducted at 1 day before treatment and with one week interval after treatment. Data were collected: (1) grain yield: weight of grain in $kg\;ha^{-1}$, (2) 1000 grain weight: average weight of 1000 grain, (3) plant height: distance from soil to top of panicle or leaf in cm, (4) ear length: distance from top of stem to top of ear in cm, (5) stem diameter: diameter of second internode (6) degree of lodging: percentage of lodging area, etc. Analyses of variance were performed using R version 3.3.1(https://www. r- project. org). The Duncan's multiple range test(DMR) was used to separate treatment means at P < 0.05. There was a significant difference in plant height and number of stem among the use time and dose of prohexadium-calcium during vegetative growth stage. At 25 DAS, the difference with no treatment increased until 25 day after treatment and decreased since then. The difference in number of stem increased until 18 day and decreased since 25 day. At 35 DAS, the difference with no treatment in plant height and number of stem increased until 22 day after treatment and decreased since then. We assumed that the effect of prohexadium-calcium was inhibition of internode elongation and promotion of tillering, continued untel 25day after treatment. At 25 DAS, the degree of lodging deceased to 100%, 30%, 10% and 0% as dose increased. At 35 DAS, the degree of lodging decreased to 100%, 20%, 0% and 0% as dose increased. At 25 DAS, the yield was 2910, 2710, 3190, $2310kg\;ha^{-1}$ among dose. At 35 DAS, the yield was 2750, 2630, 2220, $2050kg\;ha^{-1}$. We recommend that the optimum use time and dose of prohexadium-calcium for proso millet is 1000 times diluted solution of $1000{\ell}$ per ha at 25 day after sowing.

  • A field experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of tillage systems and fertilizer management on yield and nutrient uptake in Soybean. The plant height, fresh weight and dry weight of conventional tillage were much higher those observed for no-tillage. Significant differences in plant height were observed under tillage practices combined with fertilizer treatment. However, the greatest plant height (128.47 cm) was observed in conventional tillage with chemical fertilizer, and the lowest (45.4 cm) was observed in the no-tillage with green manure treatment. The highest fresh weight (172.4 g) and dry weight (44.1 g) were observed from the no-tillage chemical treatment in the late flowering stage of soybean. The plant concentration of nitrate was higher (2.29%) in no-tillage with green manure than it was with chemical fertilization. However, nitrogen increased steadily in all treatments, and the highest quantity of total nitrogen (476.7 Kg/ha) was observed in no-tillage with green manure. The N content in the soil decreased gradually just after the vegetative stage. Tillage practices and additional fertilizer application had an adverse effect on the uptake of N, P and K in soybean seeds. The nitrogen concentration in seeds was found to be increased in the no-tillage with green manure treatment. The uptake of more nitrogen induced a better yield. Thus, the no-tillage with green manure treatment had the greatest yield, although no significant difference was observed among foliar-applications and additional fertilization. Additionally, the phosphorus and potassium concentrations in seeds remained the same between the conventional tillage and no-tillage treatments. The results obtained in this study indicate that no-tillage strategies with fertilizers may influence the growth characteristics and mineral uptake in soybean.

  • To obtain basic information on the breeding of early maturing, short plant height rapeseed varieties, the following 7 varieties, Isuzu, Miyuki, Norin 25, Rang, Yongdang, Cresus and Tower were used in diallel crosses in 1979. Maturing date, plant height and grain weight per plant for the parents, $F_1$'s and $F_2$'s of the 7 x 7 partial diallel crosses were measured in 1981 for analysis of their genetic behavior. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The days to maturing of $F_1$'s showed complete dominance for early maturing, and both additive and dominance genetic variances were significant. Number of effective factors in $F_1$'s was 3, but in $F_2$'s was 1. The degree of dominance in $F_1$'s was partial, while in $F_2$'s was complete. Both broad and narrow sense herita-bilities in $F_1$'s was high, while in $F_2$'s was low. 2. Yield per plant in $F_2$'s was controlled by additive component of genetic variance only, but $F_1$'s was different. The degree of dominance in $F_1$'s was complete, while in $F_2$'s was partial. The direction of dominance showed almost complete dominance over high yield and three effective factors was estimated. Yield per plant was controlled by recessive genes. 3. The plant height was controlled by both dominance and additive variance. Dominance was directed toward tall plant height. Number of effective factors was 2, and broad and narrow sense heritability were high in the plant height.

  • A high-resolution physical map targeting a cluster of yield-related QTLs on the long arm of rice chromosome 9 was constructed across a 35.5kb region containing the six predicted genes including the probable ascorbate peroxidase (OsApx). The $BC_3F_6$ near isogenic lines (NILs) were derived from a cross between the Oryza sativa Hwaseong and O. rufipogon. The plant height and length of internodes were compared between Hwaseong and NILs. There were significant differences in plant height between Hwaseong and NILs. The NILs internodes were longer than Hwaseong, showing dramatic elongation in the first and fourth internodes; thereby, leading to increased plant height. The antioxidant activity of Hwaseong and NILs was also analyzed by 3,3-diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. In order to understand whether or not OsApx gene is important in scavenging $H_2O_2$ in rice, DAB staining was used. Intense dark-brown coloration was observed in Hwaseong than NILs. In addition, DPPH scavenging ability of Hwaseong showed lower value than NILs. These results indicated that the internode elongation and antioxidant activity might possibly be controlled by OsApx. To know the causative relationship of the gene and phenotype, we will further analyze the gene expression and use it for functional studies by complementation transgenic approach.

  • $F_2$ progenies from the crosses between 'Caribo' monosomic lines and 'Diplomat' revealed significant differences in plant height in 7 $F_2$ populations. Well known effects of monosomic constritution of group 2 homoeologues and chromosome 5A sufficiently well explain reduced or increased plant height in these crosses respectively. Minor gene effects were recognized from 'Diplomat' chromosomes 3B, 6A and 7A and interpreted to explain or to contribute to genetic control of the rather small differences in plant height between cv. 'Caribo' and 'Diplomat'.

  • Barnyard grasses are dominant weed that are not eliminated easily in the direct water seeding cultivation. So, deep water treatment can reduce their growth at the early growing stage of submerged paddy. This study was carried out to investigate the reducing growth of the barnyard grasses through flooding at seedling stages of rice plant in the green house. Under the normal condition, the plant height of rice variety, Samgwangbyeo, and 3 species of barnyard grass, E. caudata, E. pratocola and E. utilis were not showed the difference up to 10 days after seeding while the plant height of 3 barnyard grass species, especially E. utilis, was more elongated than the rice at 25 days after seeding. Plant height of the 3 barnyard grasses were not elongated largely during 3, 5 and 7 days of flooding treatment at 10 days after seeding. Interestingly, the rice seedlings was grown over 20 cm, and the flooding tolerance of rice seedling was higher than the 3 barnyard grass varieties. However, after flooding treatment for 3, 5 and 7 days, the elongation of plant height of 3 barnyard grasses, especially E. utilis was more speedy compared to rice seedlings as 6 to 9 days passes. And the protein spots from barnyard grasses were also reduced and eliminated more than the spots of rice seedling after flooding treatment.

  • Background: The leaves of the goji berry (Lycium chinense Mill.) are used as raw materials in processing and by replace fruits to some extent. The reason is that the leaves are cheaper, however, betaine content is higher than in the fruits. These experiments were conducted to determine the planting density and cutting height for producing a large number of leaves. Methods and Results: The cultivar 'Myeongan' with many branches was used. When the shoot height reached 50 cm - 70 cm, harvesting was possible four times a year. The time to next harvest was approximately 38 days after regeneration of new shoots. Leaf quantity was in the order of 1st > 2nd > 4th > 3rd harvest. Insect damage occurred during the third harvest in late July and early August, therefore, eco-friendly control was necessary. The total yield was higher at the planting density 60 cm × 30 cm than that of 60 cm × 20 cm or 60 cm × 40 cm. The yield at cutting for shoot height of 60 cm was increased by 6.3 percent compared to that of 50 cm, At the cutting height of 70 cm, harvest was difficult owing to hardening of stems and thorns. Betaine content, an indicator component of goji berry, was not significantly different according to planting densities and cutting height. Conclusions: The ideal cutting period to produce leaves of goji berry for processing is when the shoots grow to approximately 60 cm, and the leaves can be harvested 4 times a year. The dried-leaf yield was highest at the planting density of 60 cm × 30 cm.

  • The genetic information was required to improve several plant characteristics of the two modified opaque-2 synthetics, which were synthesized in 1980 at the Chungnam National University. Genetic analysis to obtain the information was carried out by the method of Hallauer and Wright. The information obtained from the analysis indicates that plant characteristics such as plant height, ear height, kernel weight and yield of the two synthetics can be improved by proper breeding procedures, since these characteristics were showing high estimates of genetic and additive variance. The study also shows that some characteristics such as ear length or kernel row number may be not improved effectively and with ease.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the variation of growth and yield using different planting densities and vinyl mulching in S. miltiorrhiza cultivation. Top plant growth was observed in the $30{\times}30cm$ planting density of S. miltiorrhiza;, plant height, leaves and branches were larger than in the other treatments. Root length, root diameter, and supporting roots of underground part were increased as planting density was wide, and dry root weight was increased in $30{\times}30cm$. However, yield was highest at 294 kg/10a in the planting density of $30{\times}10cm$. The use of 30-31cm white and black vinyl mulching had no significant effect on the plant height of S. miltiorrhiza, as compared to non-mulching. However, the highest volume of leaves and plant weight was observed in plants using 24.7 black vinyl mulching. Dry underground root weight was highest in black vinyl mulching at 21.7 g compared to 17.0 g for non-mulching. Yield per 10a increased by 28% using black vinyl mulching compared to non-mulching. Based on the results of this study, planting density of $30{\times}10cm$ and black vinyl mulching are the most suitable in the cultivation of S. miltiorrhiza.
