L2 Reader's Critical Reading Interpretation

  • This study investigated how EFL readers critically read texts which are written in English. Although critical reading has been discussed in advanced EFL and ESL contexts there has not been much research on the critical reading of beginning EFL learners. Many educators are recommending that a critical perspective be adopted so that L2 learners can become empowered rather than indoctrinated. In this study, the researcher has examined the critical reading practices of five beginning level EFL readers in Korea and five first language readers of English in the United States as they read a news editorial article. The significant findings were discussed related to critical reading practice of L2 readers. The findings of the study can help the educators in English education in improving the curriculum, the teaching methodology and the learning theory for EFL reading for critical reading.

중환자 전문간호사 수요추계연구 (A Study on the Projection of Critical Care Advanced Practical Nurses(APNs))

  • Purpose: This descriptive study was conducted to project the number of critical care APNs needed in critical care units in an acute care hospital setting, up to the year 2020. Method: Necessary data and information were collected from various funded reports, professional literature, web-sites and personal visits to national and private institutions. The demand of critical care APNs were projected based on two critical care APNs per critical care units. Result: The projected number of critical APNs for the critical care units in acute care hospital settings as follows: 1) The total projected number of critical care APNs needed for critical care units were 1,270 in 2001. 2) By the year 2020, total number of projected critical care APNs needed in critical care units will be 1,080-1,700. Conclusion: In order to match the supply to the need, the professional organization should direct their efforts toward enacting legislation. Educational systems should identify strategies in initiation of critical care APN programs in masters level as well as standardizing curriculums across the programs.

복강경 담낭 절제술 환자의 표준관리지침 개발 및 적용 효과 (Development and Effectiveness of the Critical Pathway for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Patients)

  • Purpose: In this study, the critical pathway for laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients was developed and applied for clinical study. The effectiveness of the critical pathway was analyzed. Method: The subjects with no critical pathway services of this study were 30 laparoscopic cholecystectomy operation patients, who were hospitalized in B General Hospital in Busan from Nov. 28. 2000 to May 2. 2001. The subjects with critical pathway services of this study were 30 laparoscopic cholecystectomy operation patients, who were hospitalized in B General Hospital in Busan from June. 11. 2001 to Oct. 31. 2001. Results: 1. Development for critical pathway Preliminary critical pathway for the laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients was developed though analysis of the reference and 34 case of medical record. The items on the y-axis were assessment, test, treatment, diet, fluid, consult, medication, activity and education and the items on the x-axis were till 3days after operation. The developed critical pathway was applied in clinical field. 2. Effectiveness of application on developed critical pathwayPost operational complication was not found in neither the critical pathway using Group nor Non-using Group. Hospitalization period mean was 4.63 days for the using Group and 5.93 days for the Non-using Group(P=.001). The mean cost for medical examination and treatment for the using Group was 786,270 won, 117,454 won(12.9%) less than that of the Non-using Group, 903,724 won(P=.000). The degree of satisfaction for the using group was 3.7 points, for the Non-using Group, 3.15 points. The degree of satisfaction for the used Group was 0.55 points higher than that for the Non-using Group and there was a statistically significant difference(P=.000). Concousion: From results of this study, Using the critical pathway in the laparoscopic cholecystectomy operational patients was effective in decreasing the hospitalization period and cost, and increasing the satisfaction about the medical service.

간호학생의 비판적 사고능력에 관한 연구 (A Study of Critical Thinking Ability of Associate and Baccalaurate Degree Nursing Students)

  • This descriptive study was done to investigate the critical thinking ability of senior nursing students in two types of nursing education programs : associate and baccalaureate programs. Data were conveniently collected from 159 associate degree nursing (ADN)students and 158 baccalaureate degree nursing(BSN)students. All schools were the Ministry of Education accredited and located in Seoul City and Kyung gi Province. These data were collected by self reporting questionaire given over two months from March to May, 1995. The subjects completed the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) and a demographic questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test with the SAS program. The results of this study are as follows 1. The mean of critical thinking ability of the ADN students was 42.69. 2. The mean of critical thinking ability of the BSN students was 47.68. 3. There was significant difference in the WGCTA scores between the ADN and the BSN students (t=7.38 p<0.001) 4. This study suggests that critical thinking ability may increase with higher levels of nursing education. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed.

한계변형률 개념을 활용한 터널안전성 평가 (Tunnel Safety Assessment by using the Concept of the Critical Strain in the Ground)

  • In this study, an application method of critical strains concept for tunnels' safety by using the values of measured displacements which are obtained in the field is discussed. The aim is to: (1) study on the engineering meanings of critical strains concept by reviewing the previous researches and application examples with measured displacement values; (2) study on the engineering reasonability of critical strains concept with the view point of a tunnel engineering and a geotechnical engineering; (3) study on the features of ground deformation due to tunneling and reciprocal relation between total displacement and measured displacement; (4) evaluate a tunnel safety by using domestic measurements collected in the field; and (5) re-evaluate the control criteria which were previously used in the field, with the view point of critical strains concept. Consequently, it was confirmed that critical strains in the ground has a reasonability and a possibility of unified or common concept with the view point of a tunnel engineering.

Mediating effect of major satisfaction on the influence of critical thinking disposition on disaster recognition

  • The purpose of this study was to identify mediating effect of major satisfaction in the effect of critical thinking disposition on disaster recognition. For this study, 237 students of nursing students from universities in Jeollanam do participated in the study. The data collection was collected on Dec 1 to 7, 2017. The descriptive statistics was used to analyze general characteristics of participants, the differences in disaster recognition according to general characteristics were analyzed by t-test or ANOVA. Regression analysis was conducted to confirm the effect of critical thinking disposition on disaster recognition and Baron, R.M. And Kenny, D.A.'s mediation effect statistic analysis was used to confirm the mediating effect of major satisfaction in critical thinking disposition on disaster recognition. As a result, the critical thinking disposition affects the disaster recognition, and it was judged that the major satisfaction was mediating role. intellectual fairness sub-factor showed perfect mediating effect and confidence and general truth sub-factor showed partial mediating effect. Based on the above findings, it can be seen that not only critical thinking but also satisfaction with the major should be considered in order to increase the recognition of the sudden disaster. In this case, research for linking critical thinking disposition and major satisfaction is likely to be meaningful. Through the results of this study, we suggest the program development of a linkage between critical thinking disposition and major satisfaction to increase the recognition of disaster.

대학생들의 비판적 사고 성향이 직업적 성격에 미치는 영향 (A Study on Effects of Critical Thinking Dispositions on Vocational Personality in University Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of critical thinking dispositions on vocational personalities in university students. Subjects were 111 University students in Busan. The questionnaire used in this research were Holland's Vocational Personality Questionnaire and California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory. The results were analyzed by correlation analysis and enter multiple regression using the SPSS statistical package (SPSS for windows 12.0; SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The study results were as follow: First, the students had much more S and R vocational personality characteristics than the others in vocational personality characteristics and had higher inquisitiveness and self-confidence scores than the others in critical thinking dispositions. Second, there were significant relationships between vocational personality types and critical thinking dispositions. Third, some of the vocational personality types were affected by the critical thinking dispositions. Especially I, E, and C personality of vocational personalities were prospected by critical thinking dispositions. Therefore, It's necessary that we understand the relationships between vocational personality types and critical thinking dispositions. Also we have to think over how to development career programs for university students to match to the learner's vocational personality type and critical thinking dispositions.

중환자실 간호사 근무환경과 환자가족 만족도의 관계 (Critical Care Nursing Work Environment and Family Satisfaction)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the nursing work environment and family satisfaction in Korean intensive care units (ICUs). Methods: The study participants were 190 critical care nurses and 133 family members of ICU patients who were randomly chosen from four of the hospitals located in B city. The Korean Nursing Work Environment Scale was used to assess the work environment of critical care nurses. Family satisfaction was measured with the Korean version of the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory. Results: Critical care nurses reported moderate satisfaction with their work environment. The mean score for family satisfaction was 3.59 on a 5-point scale, and satisfaction with information provision received the highest score. Family satisfaction was higher in hospitals where the critical care nurses evaluated their work environment positively. Conclusion: This study revealed that the work environment of nurses affects family satisfaction in ICUs. Therefore, it is necessary to explore various methods of improving the critical care nursing work environment in order to provide the highest possible level of nursing care.

간호대학생의 비판적 사고 성향과 비판적 사고 기술에 관한 종적 연구 (A Longitudinal Study of Critical Thinking Dispositions & Critical Thinking Skills in Baccalaureate Nursing Students)

  • Purpose: This longitudinal study was done to investigate critical thinking dispositions and critical thinking skills of nursing students enrolled in a 4-year baccalaureate program at a university in Korea. Method: The study used a longitudinal design. A convenience sample of 32 nursing students who were completing their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year in a baccalaureate program at a selected university was included. The subjects completed the California Critical Thinking Dispositions Inventory (CCTDI), the California Critical Thinking Skill Test (CCTST), and a demographic questionnaire. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, repeated ANOVA, adjusted p-values, and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SAS 8.12. Results: There was statistically significant improvement according to academic year in the CCTDI total mean score (F=7.54, p= .0001) and subscales of Open-mindedness, Self-confidence, and Maturity. Contrarily, no statistically significant difference was found in the CCTST total mean score and subscales' score except Analysis. Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between critical thinking dispositions and skills, so it will be necessary to repeat a study like this, and the translated instruments should be modified by considering Korean culture.

일부 치위생 전공 대학생의 비판적 사고 성향과 자기 효능감과의 관련성 (Correlation between critical thinking disposition and self-efficacy in dental hygiene students)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between critical thinking disposition and self-efficacy in dental hygiene students. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 486 dental hygiene students in for colleges Jellabukdo from March to June, 2016. The study instrument included general characteristics of the subjects, critical thinking disposition, and self-efficacy. The instrument for critical thinking disposition was adapted from Yoon and consisted of intellectual zeal/curiosity, prudence, self-confidence, systemicity, intellectual impartiality, sound skepticism, and objectivity. Each question was measured by Likert 5 point scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.73 in the study. The instrument for self-efficacy was adapted from Kim and consisted of self-efficacy confidence, self-regulation efficacy, and task difficulty choice using Likert 5 point scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.73 in the study. Results: The correlation between critical thinking disposition and details of each area showed a strong correlation. The strongest positive correlation in passion was 0.721 for curiosity and critical thinking disposition overall(p<0.01). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop the program for critical thinking disposition and self-efficacy in the dental hygiene students.
