This paper presents an optimum design of a rotor-bearing spindle system for a ultra centrifuge (80,000 RPM) supported by ball bearings with nonlinear stiffness characteristics. To obtain the nonlinear bearing stiffnesses, a ball bearing is modeled in five degrees of freedom and is analyzed quasi-statically. The dynamic behaviors of the nonlinear rotor-bearing system are analyzed by using a transfer-matrix method iteratively. For optimization. we use the cost function that simultaneously minimizes the weight of a rotor and maximizes the separation margins to yield the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. Augmented Lagrange Multiplier (ALM) method is employed for the nonlinear optimization problem. The result shows that the rotor-bearing spindle system is optimized to obtain 9.5% weight reduction and 21% separation margin.
This paper presents a new method for including the dynamic stiffness of the stationary parts in rotordynamic analysis. As a consequence of the support dynamics, critical speeds are varied and/or additional critical speeds are introduced. Therefore, dynamic effects of the support are often significant in high speed turbomachinery, but most of analysis has considered the support as a rigid body or a simple structure. The proposed method is based on the coupled characteristics of the driving point and transfer frequency response functions of the support system to model the equivalent spring-mass series in finite element analysis. To demonstrate the applicability of the simulation procedures provided, it is applied to the rotor model of the double suction centrifugal pump. Results of the suggested equivalent-support rotor model including coupled effects agree well with the entire pump model.

The plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is induced by changes of the microstructure when the loading is beyond the critical state of stress. Constitutive models for the crystal plasticity have the common objective which relates microscopic single crystals in the crystallographic texture to the macroscopic continuum point. In this paper, a new consistent tangent stiffness for the anisotropic elasto-viscoplastic analysis of polycrystalline deformation is developed, which can be used in the finite element analysis for the slip-dominated large deformation of polycrystalline materials. In order to calculate the consistent tangent stiffness, the state function is defined based on the consistency condition between the elastic and plastic stress. The rate of shearing increment($\Delta{\gamma}^{\alpha}$) is calculated with satisfying the consistency condition. The consistency condition becomes zero when the trial resolved shear stress($\tau^{{\alpha}^*}$) becomes resolved shear stress($\tau^{\alpha}$) at every step. Iterative method is utilized to calculate the rate of shearing increment based on the implicit backward Euler method. The consistent tangent stiffness can be formulated by differentiating the rate of shearing increment with total strain increment after the instant rate of shearing increment converges. The proposed tangent stiffness is applied to the ABAQUS/Standard by implementing in the ABAQUS/UMAT.
This research has been performed to reveal the hysteresis phenomena of the hunting motion in a railway passenger cars. It is found that there are some factors and its operation region to make the nonlinear critical speed reacts to them more sensitively than the linear critical speed. The simulation results show that a self steering bogie system can be a substitute proposal to improve curving Performance together with the reduction of hysteresis of critical speed. Full scale roller rig test is carried out for the validation of the numerical results. Finally, it is certified that wear of wheel profile and stiffness discontinuities of wheelset suspension caused by deterioration have to be considered in the analysis to predict the hysteresis of critical speed precisely.

This study was performed to evaluate the dynamic behavior of turbo pump unit. The acceptable separate margin of 1st critical speed was obtained by the use of elastic-ring inserted ball bearing, while the poor separate margin of 1$\^$st/ critical speed was appeared in the case without the elastic-ring. In addition, the results show that the stiffness and damping of plain seals gain more separate margin of 2nd critical speed. However the wear or the failure of seals could reduce the 2$\^$nd/ critical speeds near the operating speed.
This paper presents the critical speed analysis of geogrid-reinforced rail roadbeds on soft soil. A rail roadbed on soft ground must be designed to avoid intolerable stress in the underlying soil and to give sufficient support for the rail system. At high speeds, the deformation of rail systems will gain dynamic amplification, and reach excessive values as a certain speed, here termed critical speed is approached. The elastic Winkler foundation model was used to predict the critical speed of geogrid-reinforced rail roadbeds on soft soil and the model properties were determined by the in-situ cyclic plate load test. Based on the parametric study of elastic beam on Winkler foundation model, the critical speed increase with the increase of the flexural risidity of subgrade EI and the stiffness coefficient of Winkler foundation k. From the in-situ cyclic load tests and analysis of elastic beam on Winkler foundation model, the critical speed increase with increase in number of reinforced layer and non-dimensional value for depth of first geogrid layers and the thickness of reinforced rail roadbed u/d.
This study was performed to evaluate the dynamic behavior of turbo pump unit. The acceptable separate margin of $1^{st}$ critical speed was obtained by the use of elastic-ring inserted ball bearing, while the poor separate margin of $1^{\st}$ critical speed was appeared in the case without the elastic-ring. In addition, the results show that the stiffness and damping of plain seals give more separate margin of $2^{nd}$ critical speed. However the wear or the failure of seals could reduce the $2^{nd}$ critical speed near the operating speed.

In this paper the critical speed analysis and design sensitivity investigation are carried out with an APU(auxiliary power unit) gas turbine having a spline shaft connection. The DDM(direct differential method) is directly applied to formulate the critical speed design sensitivity problem of a general nonsymmetric-matrix rotor-bearing system. The design sensitivity analysis have shown that the critical speed change rate to the support modeling of the spline shaft connection point is extremely negligible, and thereby its design uncertainty is lifted. It has also been confirmed that the critical speeds up to the 4th are not sensitive to the design stiffness coefficients of 4-main bearings or supports, including two air foil bearings. Further, the critical speed change rate to the shaft-element length have shown quantitatively that the spline shaft has some limited influence on the 4th critical speed.
In this study, optimum design methodology for rail vehicle suspension characteristics is suggested. Three parameters, primary lateral/longitunal stiffness and secondary lateral stiffness, are selected as design parameters. critical speed, suspension stroke trade-off and derailment coefficient are selectee as performance constraints. The optimum parameters to maximize ride quality are evaluated under the constraints. Steady-state curiving model to be able to evaluate derailment coefficient is developed. The combined design procedure is developed to evaluate Three parameters at the same time.
This paper presents a rotordynamic analysis of the reduction gear system applied to the 250 kW super critical CO2 cycle. The reduction gear system consists of an input shaft, intermediate shaft, and output shaft. Because of the high rotating speed of the input shaft, we install tilting pad bearings, rolloer bearings support the intermediate and output shafts. To predict the tilting pad bearing performance, we calculate the applied loads to the tilting pad bearings by considering the reaction forces from the gear. In the rotordynamic analysis, gear mesh stiffness results in a coupling effect between the lateral and torsional vibrations. The predicted Campbell diagram shows that there is not a critical speed lower than the rated speed of 30,000 rpm of the input shaft. The predicted modes on the critical speeds are the combined bending modes of the intermediate and output shaft, and the lateral vibrations dominate when compared to the torsional vibrations. The damped natural frequency does not strongly depend on the rotating speeds, owing to the relatively low rotating speed of the intermediate and output shaft and constant stiffness of the roller bearing. In addition, the logarithmic decrements of all the modes are positive; therefore all modes are stable.
