Wedging in a frictional elastic system is defined if the state of stick exists after the external loading on the system is removed. This paper presents a method to determine the critical coefficient of wedging for an elastic frictional system by considering the separation state. Wedging is always possible if the coefficient of friction exceeds a critical value known as the critical wedging coefficient. This method requires two concepts: a necessary and sufficient condition for wedging, which can be interpreted as positive spanning sets of constraint vectors existing in the wedged system, and the minimal positive basis that enables a minimum wedging coefficient. The algorithm based on the positive spanning concept is repeatedly executed after eliminating nodes from the contact stiffness matrix, for which the separation states are impending. The simulation results show that once a node enters the separation state, it never returns to the contact state again and the critical wedging coefficient reduces during repeated algorithm execution. The benefit of this method is that the computation time permits handling models with large numbers of contact nodes. The algorithm can also numerically find the critical wedging coefficient, thereby contributing to fastening and assembly performance improvements in mechanical systems.

This paper describes the dynamic behavior and enhancement of Korean high-speed trains. The tail vibration reduction method of the yaw damper installation method change, which was derived from previous research, was applied to the running test of high-speed train. In addition, the vibration reduction method for the entire vehicle was derived by a numerical method and its effect was confirmed by a running test. The improved design was applied to the double-deck high-speed train coaches and the commissioning proceeded without problems in dynamic behavior. Sensitivity analysis of the suspension parameters affecting the critical speed of Korean next-generation high-speed trains was performed and four design variables that greatly affected the critical speed were derived. These were in the order of the primary elastic joint x-directional stiffness, the secondary yaw damper series stiffness, the secondary lateral damper damping coefficient, and the carbody damper damping coefficient. By optimizing the design variables, the suspension parameter that improves the critical speed by 23.3% can be used in the commercial designs of Korean next-generation high-speed trains.

This paper presents an analytical solution for correctly predicting the Lateral-Torsional Buckling critical moment of simply supported castellated beams, the solution covers uniformly distributed loads combined with compressive loads. For this purpose, the castellated beam section with hexagonal-type perforation is treated as an arrangement of double "T" sections, composed of an upper T section and a lower T section. The castellated beam with regular openings is considered as a periodic repeating structure of unit cells. According to the kinematic model, the energy principle is applied in the context of geometric nonlinearity and the linear elastic behavior of materials. The differential equilibrium equations are established using Galerkin's method and the tangential stiffness matrix is calculated to determine the critical lateral torsional buckling loads. A Finite Element simulation using ABAQUS software is performed to verify the accuracy of the suggested analytical solution, each castellated beam is modelled with appropriate sizes meshes by thin shell elements S8R, the chosen element has 8 nodes and six degrees of freedom per node, including five integration points through the thickness, the Lanczos eigen-solver of ABAQUS was used to conduct elastic buckling analysis. It has been demonstrated that the proposed analytical solution results are in good agreement with those of the finite element method. A parametric study involving geometric and mechanical parameters is carried out, the intensity of the compressive load is also included. In comparison with the linear solution, it has been found that the linear stability underestimates the lateral buckling resistance. It has been confirmed that when high axial loads are applied, an impressive reduction in critical loads has been observed. It can be concluded that the obtained analytical solution is efficient and simple, and offers a rapid and direct method for estimating the lateral torsional buckling critical moment of simply supported castellated beams.
The primary function of the trackbed in a conventional railway track system is to decrease the stresses in the subgrade to be in an acceptable level. A properly designed trackbed layer performs this task adequately. Many design procedures have used assumed and/or are based on critical stiffness values of the layers obtained mostly in the field to calculate an appropriate thickness of the sublayers of the trackbed foundation. However, those stiffness values do not consider strain levels clearly and precisely in the layers. This study proposes a method of computation of stiffness that can handle with strain level in the layers of the trackbed foundation in order to provide properly selected design values of the stiffness of the layers. The shear modulus values are dependent on shear strain level so that the strain levels generated in the subgrade in the trackbed under wheel loading and below plate of Repeated Plate Bearing Test (RPBT) are investigated by finite element analysis program ABAQUS and PLAXIS programs. The strain levels generated in the subgrade from RPBT are compared to those values from RC (Resonant Column) test after some consideration of strain levels and stress consideration. For comparison of shear modulus G obtained from RC test and stiffness moduli $E_{v2}$ obtained from RPBT in the field, many numbers of mid-size RC tests in laboratory and RPBT in field were performed extensively. It was found in this study that there is a big difference in stiffness modulus when the converted $E_{v2}$ values were compared to those values of RC test. It is verified in this study that it is necessary to use precise and increased loading steps to construct nonlinear curves from RPBT in order to get correct $E_{v2}$ values in proper strain levels.
In general, the interaction conditions between the discrete stones are not taken into account by structural engineers during the modeling and analyzing of historical stone bridges. However, many structural damages in the stone bridges occur due to ignoring the interaction conditions between discrete stones. In this study, it is aimed to examine the seismic behavior of a historical stone bridge by considering the interaction stiffness parameters between stone elements. For this purpose, Tokatli historical stone arch bridge was built in 1179 in Karabük-Turkey, is chosen for three-dimensional (3D) seismic analyses. Firstly, the 3D finite-difference model of the Tokatli stone bridge is created using the FLAC3D software. During the modeling processes, the Burger-Creep material model which was not used to examine the seismic behavior of historical stone bridges in the past is utilized. Furthermore, the free-field and quiet non-reflecting boundary conditions are defined to the lateral and bottom boundaries of the bridge. Thanks to these boundary conditions, earthquake waves do not reflect in the 3D model. After each stone element is modeled separately, stiffness elements are defined between the stone elements. Three situations of the stiffness elements are considered in the seismic analyses; a) for only normal direction b) for only shear direction c) for both normal and shear directions. The earthquake analyses of the bridge are performed for these three different situations of the bridge. The far-fault and near-fault conditions of 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake are taken into account during the earthquake analyses. According to the seismic analysis results, the directions of the stiffness parameters seriously changed the earthquake behavior of the Tokatli bridge. Moreover, the most critical stiffness parameter is determined for seismic analyses of historical stone arch bridges.

Optical disk technology with a laser beam for data recording and retrieval is one of the most promising route for high density information storage in multimedia era. As the storage density and data transfer rates are increased, mechanical issues, mainly noise and vibration, become critical. Rubber materials are extensively used in various machine design application, mainly for vibration/shock/noise control devices. Over the years an enormous effort has been put into developing procedures to provide properties of rubber components with complex shape and under pre-deformed state. In this paper, non-linear large deformations of a rubber mount for optical disk drive were investigated using the finite element method. A tension test of rubber material was performed, to calculate a strain energy function. According to the pre-deformed state, the variation of rubber mount stiffness were calculated and the reliability of numerical results were checked by compared with the measuring the deflection values. Also, the effects of the pre-deformed rubber mount on the system dynamic characteristics were investigated and the relation between the static stiffness variation of rubber mount and the natural frequence variation of system was discussed.
Wind tunnel aeroelastic model tests of the Commonwealth Advisory Aeronautical Research Council (CAARC) standard tall building were conducted using a three-degree-of-freedom base hinged aeroelastic(BHA) model. Experimental investigation into the effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, cross-wind/torsional frequency ratio and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness on the wind-induced response characteristics and wind excitation mechanisms was carried out. The wind tunnel test results highlight the significant effects of coupled translational-torsional motion, and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness, on both the normalised along-wind and cross-wind acceleration responses for reduced wind velocities ranging from 4 to 20. Coupled translational-torsional motion and eccentricity between centre of mass and centre of stiffness also have significant impacts on the amplitude-dependent effect caused by the vortex resonant process, and the transfer of vibrational energy between the along-wind and cross-wind directions. These resulted in either an increase or decrease of each response component, in particular at reduced wind velocities close to a critical value of 10. In addition, the contribution of vibrational energy from the torsional motion to the cross-wind response of the building model can be greatly amplified by the effect of resonance between the vortex shedding frequency and the torsional natural frequency of the building model.
Soft-story buildings have bottom stories much less rigid than the top stories and are susceptible to earthquake damage. Therefore, the seismic design specifications need strict design considerations in such cases. In this paper, a four-story building was investigated as a case study and the effects of X-braces elimination in its lower stories studied. In addition, the possibility of replacement of the X-braces in soft-stories with equivalent moment resisting frame inspected in two different phases. In first phase, the stiffness of X-braces and equivalent moment-resisting frames evaluated using classic equations. In final phase, diagonals removed from the lowest story to develop a soft-story and replaced with moment resisting frames. Then, the seismic stiffness variation of moment-resisting frame evaluated using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. The results show that substitution of braced frames with an equivalent moment-resisting frame of the same stiffness increases story drift and reduces energy absorption capacity. However, it is enough to consider the needs of building codes, even using equivalent moment resisting frame instead of X-Braces, to avoid soft-story stiffness irregularity in seismic design of buildings. Besides, soft-story development in the second story may be more critical under strong ground excitations, because of interaction of adjacent stories.

This paper investigates critical loads of the tapered Beck's columns with clamped and spring supports, subjected to a subtangential follower force. The linearly tapered columns with the solid rectangular cross-section is adopted as the column taper. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such Beck's columns is derived using the Bemoulli-Euler beam theory. Both divergence and flutter critical loads are calculated from the load-frequency curves which are obtained by solving the differential equation. The critical loads are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the taper type, the subtangential parameter and the spring stiffness.

The effect of an elastic intermediate support on the vibration characteristics of a fluid conveying pipe system modeled as simply-simply supported and fixed-fixed supported pipes has been investigated. The approach is based on solving the closed form equation of the 4th order polynomials. The change of natural frequency and critical velocity are also investigated with the fluid density, the fluid velocity, the position and stiffness of the elastic intermediate support varied. The results show that the vibration characteristics of pipe system could be controled by changing the position and/or stiffness of the elastic intermediate support.
