  • Critical state theory involves two state boundary surface. One is Roscoe surface and the other is Hvorslev surface. The shape of these boundary surface was changed because of several parameters : Critical state constant(M), spacing ratio (r) and critical state pore pressure coefficient($\wedge$). As these constants make difference to each model and the way of solution, they may affect the shape of state boundary surface. Specially, spacing ratio (r) is important. On this study, triaxial compression test was performed using remolded weathered mudstone soil and investigated variation of state boundary surface because of spacing ratio. In the results of prediction, critical state point was located highly and the shape of boundary surface was changed more tightly curve as decreasing spacing ratio.

  • The wrinkling in the electromagnetic tube compression with a mandrel is remarkably smaller than that of the process without it. To analyze this phenomenon, the critical forming parameters such as the ratio of the clearance to the shell radius, the ratio of the thickness to the shell radius, and the ratio of the applied pressure to the standard pressure are introduced tp consider the effect of the mandrel, in addition to those of the thickness of shell and applied loads. The amplification ratio is also used to observe the magnitude of amplification. The results obtained by 2-D finite element method show that the initial imperfection embedded in the radius of cylindrical shell is the dominant factor to determine the final shape of the tube compression, and that the amplification ratio tends to have smaller values with the smaller clearance ratio and also with the larger thickness and pressure ratios.

  • Pile foundations are utilized when soil is so weak that shallow foundations are not suitable or point load is concentrated in small area. Such soil can be formed by the land reclamation works which have extensively been executed along the coastal line of southern and western parts of the Korean Peninsula. The working load at pile is sometimes subjected to not only compression load but also lateral load sad uplift forces. But in most of the practice design, uplift capacity of pile foundation is not considered and estimation of uplift capacity is presumed on the compression skin friction. This study was carried out to determine that the effect of embedment ratio and loading rate on uplift adhesion factor of concrete pile driven in clay. Based on the test results, the critical embedment ratio is about 9. Adhesion factor is constant under the critical embedment ratio, and decreasing over the critical embedment ratio. Also, adhesion factor is increased with the loading rate is increased.

  • Vector data compression algorithm can meet requirements of different levels and scales by reducing the data amount of vector graphics, so as to reduce the transmission, processing time and storage overhead of data. In view of the fact that large threshold leading to comparatively large error in Douglas-Peucker vector data compression algorithm, which has difficulty in maintaining the uncertainty of shape features and threshold selection, a segmented Douglas-Peucker algorithm based on node importance is proposed. Firstly, the algorithm uses the vertical chord ratio as the main feature to detect and extract the critical points with large contribution to the shape of the curve, so as to ensure its basic shape. Then, combined with the radial distance constraint, it selects the maximum point as the critical point, and introduces the threshold related to the scale to merge and adjust the critical points, so as to realize local feature extraction between two critical points to meet the requirements in accuracy. Finally, through a large number of different vector data sets, the improved algorithm is analyzed and evaluated from qualitative and quantitative aspects. Experimental results indicate that the improved vector data compression algorithm is better than Douglas-Peucker algorithm in shape retention, compression error, results simplification and time efficiency.

  • The hazard warning levels are necessary for the rational design and safety construction of underground space, as mountain and urban tunnel. Sakurai provided the hazard warning levels for assessing the stability of tunnels using the critical strain of rock mass, which is defined as a ratio between uni-axial compressive strength and the Young's modulus. The concept of critical strain guidelines is introduced in this study for the assessment of tunnel safety during excavation. Moreover, in this paper, the critical strain properties of sedimentary rock in Korea has investigated and analysed in detail by Lab. test, as the uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. Finally, critical strain properties of sedimentary rock on uniaxial and triaxial stress condition is discussed the relationship of failure strain values, uniaxial and triaxial compression strengths, confining pressure and Young's modulus.

  • This paper aims at the temperature and slenderness ratio effects on physical and mechanical properties of Beishan granite. A series of uniaxial compression tests with various slenderness ratios and temperatures were carried out, and the acoustic emission signal was also collected. As the temperature increases, the fracture aperture of intercrystalline cracks gradually increases, and obvious transcrystalline cracks occurs when T > 600℃. The failure patterns change from tensile failure mode to ductile failure mode with the increasing temperature. The elastic modulus decreases with the temperature and increases with slenderness ratio, then tends to be a constant value when T = 1000℃. However, the peak strain has the opposite evolution as the elastic modulus under the effects of temperature and slenderness ratio. The uniaxial compression strength (UCS) changes a little for the low-temperature specimens of T < 400℃, but a significant decrease happens when T = 400℃ and 800℃ due to phase transitions of mineral. The evolution denotes that the critical brittle-ductile transition temperature increases with slenderness ratio, and the critical slenderness ratio corresponding to the characteristic mechanical behavior tends to be smaller with the increasing temperature. Additionally, the AE quantity also increases with temperature in an exponential function.

  • This paper is represented a general equations to obtain the elastic local buckling stresses for the flange and web of H-beam under compression at elevated temperatures and is also developed the software to perform the elastic local buckling analysis at elevated temperatures. Eurocode3 Part 1.2 are used to analyse the decrease in steel yield strength and elastic modulus at elevated temperatures. For design examples of 6 H-beams, the elastic local buckling stresses and critical temperatures for the slenderness ratio $(b/t_f\;and\;d/t_w)$ of the flange and web under uniform compression at elevated temperatures have been analysed by a computer program of this paper. It can be seen that the computer analytical results of this study show a good agreement with the experimental results by Wadee.

  • Cellular and castellated steel beams are used to obtain higher stiffness and bending capacity using the same weight of steel. In addition, the beam openings may be used as a pass for different mechanical fixtures such as ducts and pipes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters on both elastic and inelastic critical buckling stresses of steel web plates with openings. These parameters are plate aspect ratio; opening shape (circular or rectangular); end distance to the first opening; opening spacing; opening size; plate slenderness ratio; steel grade; and initial web imperfection. The web/flange interaction has been simplified by web edge restraints representing simply supported boundary conditions. A numerical parametric study has been performed through linear and nonlinear finite element (FE) models, where the FE results have been verified against both experimental and numerical results in the literature. The web plates are subject to in-plane linearly varying compression with different loading patterns, ranging from uniform compression to pure bending. A buckling stress modification factor (${\beta}$-factor) has been introduced as a ratio of buckling stress of web plate with openings to buckling stress of the corresponding solid web plate. The variation of ${\beta}$-factor against the aforementioned parameters has been reported. Furthermore, the critical plate slenderness ratio separating elastic buckling and yielding has been identified and discussed for two steel grades of DIN-17100, namely: ST-37/2 and ST-52/3. The FE results revealed that the minimum ${\beta}$-factor is 0.9 for web plates under uniform compression and 0.7 for those under both compression and tension.

  • Tapered girders emerged as an economical remedy for the challenges associated with constructing long-span buildings. From an economic standpoint, these systems offer significant advantages, such as wide spans, quick assembly, and convenient access to utilities between the beam's shallow sections and the ceiling below. Elastic-local buckling is among the various failure modes that structural designers must account for during the design process. Despite decades of study, there remains a demand for efficient and comprehensive procedures to streamline product design. One of the most pressing requirements is a better understanding of the tapered web plate girder's local buckling behavior. This paper conducts a comprehensive numerical analysis to estimate the critical buckling coefficient for simply supported tapered steel web plates, considering loading conditions involving compression and bending stresses. An eigenvalue analysis was carried out to determine the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of tapered web plates with varying geometric parameters. Additionally, the study highlights the relative significance of various parameters affecting the local buckling phenomenon, including the tapering ratio of the panel, normalized plate length, and ratio of minimum to maximum compressive stresses. The regression analysis and optimization techniques were performed using MATLAB software for the results of the finite element models to propose a separate formula for each load case and a unified formula covering different compression and bending cases of the elastic local buckling coefficient. The results indicate that the proposed formulas are applicable for estimating the critical buckling coefficient for simply supported tapered steel web plates.
