  • We conducted laboratory simulations of deep vertical drilling into the earth's crust to induce borehole breakouts and investigated their potential use for estimating in situ stress magnitudes in Westerly granite and Berea sandstone. Our experiments consisted of two major stages, a series of triaxial tests and borehole-breakout formation tests under a wide range of far-field stresses. We derived the Mohr-Coulomb, Nadai and Mogi failure criteria from the triaxial test results. Each criterion was compared with the stress condition at breakout boundaries. We concluded that the well known Mohr-Coulomb criterion is not compatible with the stress condition at breakout failure. On the other hand, polyaxial (truly triaxial) failure criteria such as the Nadai criterion for Berea sandstone and the Mogi criterion for Westerly granite were much more suitable for predicting breakout failure zone. Such failure criteria appeared to enable the reliable estimation of the magnitude of one of two horizontal principal stresses if the other one is known.

  • In this paper, a complement to the Hoek-Brown criterion is proposed in order to derive the strength of anisotropic rock from strength of the corresponding truly intact rock. The complement is a decay function, which unlike other modifications or suggestions made in the past, is multiplied to the function of the original Hoek-Brown failure criterion for intact rock. This results in a combined and extended form of the criterion which describes the strength of anisotropic rock as a varying fraction of the corresponding truly intact rock strength. Statistical procedures and in particular regression analyses were conducted into data obtained in experiments conducted in the current research program and those collected from the literature in order to define the Hoek-Brown's criterion complement. The complement function was best described by a simple polynomial including only three constants to be empirically evaluated. Further investigations also showed that these constants can be related to the other readily available parameters of rock material which further facilitate determining the constants. A great and prime advantage of the proposed complement is that it is mathematically simple including the least possible number of empirical constants which are easily estimated with minimum experimental effort. Moreover, proposed concept does not suggests any change to the original Hoek-Brown criterion itself or its constants and serves whenever anisotropy does exist in the rock. This further implies on the possibility of using any other failure criterion for intact rock in conjunction with the compliment to reach the strength of anisotropic rock.

  • We have developed of a criterion that would help to select and develop performance assessments in science education. There are six categories of a criterion: Fidelity, satisfaction, content validity, fairness & suitability, reliability & objectivity, and usability. There are the total of 25 sub-categories under the six categories. Five science educators evaluated the validity of the criterion. For reliability of the criterion, Kendall's tau-b was used. Eight science educators and elementary teachers evaluated three performance assessment tasks for the correspondence of the criterion. This study also discuss the implications of this criterion as well.

  • In this study, a series of triaxial compressive strength tests were conducted for basaltic intact rocks sampled in the northeastern onshore and offshore, southeastern offshore and northwestern offshore of Jeju Island. Hoek-Brown constants $m_i$ were estimated from the results of the triaxial compression tests, and the properties of the Hoek-Brown constants $m_i$ were investigated. In addition, the cohesion and internal friction angle, strength parameters of Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, obtained from the results of the triaxial compression tests were compared and analyzed with those estimated from Hoek-Brown failure criterion, respectively. As results, it was found that the Hoek-Brown constant $m_i$ is deeply related to the internal friction angle. As the internal friction grows, the Hoek-Brown constant $m_i$ increases exponentially. The cohesions estimated from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, on average, are approximately 24% higher than those obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The internal friction angles estimated from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion are similar to those obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion.

  • In this article we have introduced a Bayes criterion for the variable selection in multiple discriminant analysis (MDA). The criterion is a default Bayes factor for the comparision of homo/heteroscadasticity of the multivariate normal means. The default Bayes factor is obtained from a development of the imaginary training sample method introduced by Spiegelhalter and Smith (1982). Based an the criterion, we also provided a test for additional discrimination in MDA. The advantage of the criterion is that it is not only applicable for the optimal subset selection method but for the stepwise method. More over, the criterion can be reduced to that for two-group discriminant analysis. Thus the criterion can be regarded as an unified alternative to variable selection criteria suggested by various sampling theory approaches. To illustrate the performance of the criterion, a numerical study has bean done via Monte Carlo experiment.

  • This paper introduces a new P wave arrival time determination algorithm of acoustic emission (AE) suitable to identify P waves with low signal-to-noise ratio generated in rock masses around the high-level radioactive waste disposal repositories. The algorithms adopted for this paper were amplitude threshold picker, Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), two step AIC, and Hinkley criterion. The elastic waves were generated by Pencil Lead Break test on a granite sample, then mixed with white noise to make it difficult to distinguish P wave artificially. The results obtained from amplitude threshold picker, AIC, and Hinkley criterion produced relatively large error due to the low signal-to-noise ratio. On the other hand, two step AIC algorithm provided the correct results regardless of white noise so that the accuracy of source localization was more improved and could be satisfied with the error range.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop a new feature selection method for AE signal classification. The neural network of back propagation algorithm is used. The proposed feature selection method uses the difference between feature coordinates in feature space. This method is compared with the existing methods such as Fisher's criterion, class mean scatter criterion and eigenvector analysis in terms of the recognition rate and the convergence speed, using the signals from the defects in welding zone of austenitic stainless steel and in the metal contact of the rotary compressor. The proposed feature selection methods such as 2-D and 3-D criteria showed better results in the recognition rate than the existing ones.
