  • According to the industrial development welding technology is necessitated to develop in the direction of full automation, high efficiency, energy saving, and full safety. In this study, thus, a simple holder ampere controller for welding systems is developed and applied to arc welders and its capability is examined and tested. The results are as follows: 1. It has a simple structure, since the primary AC power for the welder can be directly control led using a triac. 2. It can control the electric power strength in several steps as well as on and off easily, since a small-sized variable resistance is installed in the small controller on the welding holder. 3. In real field applications a welding system with this controller increases the working efficiency greatly compare to the conventional arc welders without the system, because the controller can control the ampere onsite far from the main power supply. 4. It can reduce the probability of the electrical mishap due to electrical leakage, since the electricity is disconnected as soon as the switch is off or welding person's hand is taken off from the welder after the work or for rest. 5. It can control the welding depth in the beginning and do the crater treatment well in the ending of welding, since it always supplies the relevent amount of electrical current. Therefore, it can improve the mechanical properties of the welding zone.

  • Moon mineralogy mapper ($M^3$)'s work proved that the moon is not completely dry but has some hydroxyl/water. $M^{3{\prime}}s$ data confirmed that the amount of hydroxyl on the lunar surface is inversely related to the measured signal brightness, suggesting the lunar surface is sensitive to temperature by solar insolation. We tested the effect of solar insolation on the local distribution of hydroxyl by using $M^3$ data, and we found that most craters had more hydroxyl in shade areas than in sunlit areas. This means that the local distribution of hydroxyl is absolutely influenced by the amount of sunshine. We investigated the factors affecting differences in hydroxyl; we found that the higher the latitude, the larger the difference during daytime. We also measured the pyroxene content and found that pyroxene affects the amount of hydroxyl, but it does not affect the difference in hydroxyl between sunlit and shaded areas. Therefore, we confirmed that solar insolation plays a significant role in the local distribution of hydroxyl, regardless of surface composition.

  • Two step PEO ceramic coatings were formed on AZ91 magnesium alloy in $ZrO_2$ nanoparticles and $K_2ZrF_6$ based colloidal electrolyte solution for various voltages. Surface and layers tructure of the coatings was analyzed using SEM (ScanningElectronMicroscope). Structure analysis revealed that surface of the coating was transferred from individual pancake or craters-based structure to cluster-based structure with increasing the voltage of the secondary step process. Further, it was confirmed that the cluster zone was richin Zr-based complexes and formed due to high intensives parks. Increase in the Zr contents as discovered from the EDS analysis confirmed the rise in amorphous form of the Zr-based species, which justified the results of XRD where no increase in the intensity of Zr-based species was observed with increase in voltage. Potentiodynamic polarizariotion and impedance spectroscopy techniques were used to evaluate the corrosion performance of the coatings. The highest corrosion resistance was found for coatings prepared at 240V. The same specimen was found having highest and uniform vickers hardness ~1070.5 HV. The superior mechanical and electrochemical properties of the said coating can be attributed to the defect-less microstructure and the optimal role of $ZrO_2$ nanoparticles in the secondary PEO process at 240V.

  • Because the pure titanium has superior corrosion resistance and formability compared with different material, it is widely used as material of welded heat exchanger. When the welding of heat exchanger is carried out, certain area in which welding start and end are overlapped occurs. The humping of back bead is formed in the overlap area due to partial penetration. Thus in this study, the experiments were carried out by changing the length and wave shape of overlap area, and then the weldabiliay was evaluated through the observation of microstructure, the measurement of hardness and tensile-shear strength test in the overlap area. When overlap length was 9.8mm, humping bead was suppressed. The microstructure of overlap area coarsened and its hardness increased due to remelting. As a result of tensile-shear strength test in the overlap area according to applying the wave shape control, it was confirmed that the overlap area applied wave shape control had more excellent yield strength and ductility.

  • In order to study the relationship between static and cynamic behaviors of silion caride, both quasi-static indentaiton and impact experiments of spherical particle have been conducted. The difference inmaterial behavior when using the two mehtods suggests a loading rate difference in the damate pattrern and fracture strength of silicon carbide. This investigation showed some difference in damage pattern according to particla property, especially inthe case of particle impact. There was no differences in deformation behaviors according to the loading rate when the crater profiles were compared with each other at the same contact radius. From the result of residual strength evaluation, it was found that the strength degradation began at the initiation of ring crack and its behavior was colsely related to morphologies of the damage developed which was also dependent upon the extent of deformation atthe loaidng point. In the case of static indentation, there didnot exist the particle property effects onthe strength degradation behavior.

  • In this work, ceramic coatings were prepared on Al7075 aluminum alloy using microarc oxidation (MAO) process in a silicate-fluoride based electrolyte solution. The effect of $OH^-$ concentration, by adding NaOH to the solution on the microstructural and mechanical properties of the coating was investigated. Surface morphology and cross sectional view of the coating was analyzed using SEM while XRD was used to examine the phase compositions of the coatings. From XRD ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ phase was found to be increased by adding NaOH to the electrolyte. Thereby, the hardness and the wear properties of the MAO coatings were found to be superior to those of the coatings prepared without NaOH addition or with amount maximum than 2 g/l NaOH. Moreover, the morphology of the coatings was transformed form nodule-based cluster to crater based structure with the addition of NaOH to the MAO electrolyte solution.

  • We investigated the sintering and consolidation phenomena of silver nanoparticles under various thermal treatment conditions when they were patterned by a contact printing technique on polyimide substrate films. The sintering of metastable silver nanoparticles commenced at 180 $^{\circ}C$, where the point necks were formed at the contact points of the nanoparticles to reduce the overall surface area and the overall surface energy. As the temperature was increased up to 250 $^{\circ}C$, silver atoms diffused from the grain boundaries at the intersections and continued to deposit on the interior surface of the pores, thereby filling up the remaining space. When the consolidation temperature exceeded 270 $^{\circ}C$, the capillary force between the spherical silver particles and polyimide flat surface induced the permanent deformation of the polyimide films, leaving crater-shaped indentation marks. The bonding force between the patterned silver metal and polyimide substrate was greatly increased by the heat treatment temperature and the mechanical interlocking by the metal particle indentation.

  • Ultra-short laser pulses are effective, when high requirements concerning accuracy, surface roughness and heat affected zone are demanded for surface structuring. In particular, picosecond laser systems that are suited to be operated in industrial environments are of great interest for many practical applications. This paper focused on inducing optimum process parameters for higher volume ablation rate by analyzing a relationship between crater diameter and optical spot size. In detail, the dependency of the volume ablation rate, penetration depth and threshold fluence on the pulse duration 8 ps and wavelength of 515 nm was discussed. The experimental results showed that wavelength of 515 nm resulted in less threshold fluence ($0.075J/cm^2$) on copper than IR wavelength ($0.3J/cm^2$). As a result, it was possible that optimum fluence for higher volume ablation rate was achieved with $0.28J/cm^2$.

  • The cutting characteristics and the deformed layer of nitrogen(N)-added type 316LN stainless steel were comparatively investigated to type 316L stainless steel. The cutting force, the surface roughness(Ra) and the tool wear in face milling works were measured with cutting conditions, and the deformed layers were obtained from micro-hardness testing method. The cutting resistance of type 316LN was similar to type 316L in spite of its high strength. The surface roughness of type 316LN was superior to type 316L for all the cutting conditions. In particular, in the high cutting speed above 345m/min, the surface roughness of the two stainless steels was closely same. The deformed layer thickness of the two stainless steels was generated in the 150$\mu\textrm{m}$-300$\mu\textrm{m}$ ranges, and its value of type 316LN was lower than that of type 316L. This is due to the high strength properties by nitrogen effect. It was found that type 316LN was higher in the tool wear than that type 316L, and flank wear was dominant to crater wear. In face milling works of type 316LN steel, tool wear is regarded as a important problem.
