  • Nonlinear dynamic analysis is generally used in automobile crash analysis and structural optimization considering crashworthiness uses the results of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Automobile crash optimization has high nonlinearity and difficulty in calculating sensitivity. Recently the equivalent static load (ESL) method has been proposed in order to overcome these difficulties. The ESL is the static load set generating the same displacement field as the nonlinear dynamic displacement field at each time step in dynamic analysis. From various researches regarding the ESL method, it has been proved that the ESL method is fairly useful. The ESL method can mathematically optimize a crash optimization problem through nonlinear analysis and well developed static optimization. The ESL is applied to nonlinear dynamic structural optimization of the automobile frontal impact problem. An automobile bumper is optimized. The mass of the structure is minimized while some constraints are satisfied.

  • Described in this paper is the result of a study on collision analysis of TGV-K using 1-dimensional model for crashworthy design. Crashworthy design of the front end is very important because majority of the impact energy (more than 70%) is absorbed by the crush of the front end when the train is collided with an obstacle like a tank lorry. Guideline for the crashworthy design can be described from the collision analysis of the whole train using a 1-dimensional model. Since the headstock of TGV-K is not designed in a crashworthy point of view, a conceptual design of the headstock to improve crashworthiness is suggested and evaluated using 1-dimensional collision analysis. The suggested design, which adopts an energy absorber and a crashworthy headstock, shows a good behaviour on the accident scenario of SNCF (collision at 110 km/hr against a movable rigid mass of 15 ton).

  • The structural integrity of either a passenger car or a light truck is one of the basic requirements for a full vehicle engineering and development program. The results of the vehicle product performance are measured in terms of ride and handling, durability, Noise/Vibration/Harshness (NVH), crashworthiness, and occupant safety. The level of performance of a vehicle directly affects the marketability, profitability and, most importantly, the future of the automobile manufacturer. In this study, the Virtual Proving Ground (VPG) approach has been developed to simulate dynamic nonlinear events as applied to automotive ride & handling. The finite element analysis technique provides a unique method to create and analyze vehicle system models, capable of including vehicle suspensions, powertrains, and body structures in a single simulation. Through the development of this methodology, event-based simulations of vehicle performance over a given three-dimensional road surface can be performed. To verify the predicted dynamic results, a single lane change test was performed. The predicted results were compared with the experimental test results, and the feasibility of the integrated CAE analysis methodology was verified.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an optimal performance design ova concrete median barrier using the design of experiment and crash simulation which is done by Pam-Crash, one of the commercial crash simulation software. A formula of characteristic value was suggested to obtain an optimal performance design considering all of von Mises stress, volume and acceleration at center of gravity of a heavy truck. An optimal design of a concrete median barrier was obtained by the analysis of variance based on design of experiment and crash simulation. A crash simulation with the optimal design was accomplished in order to verify the suitability of the suggested formula and the proper application of the design of experiment. The obtained optimal design was satisfied for a domestic design regulation of a concrete median barrier.

  • Currently in design and manufacturing of railway train overseas markets, criteria for a collision condition between vehicles is noted in design specification. In the event of a train crash, it can be verified by crashworthiness analysis or an actual crash test for car's performance to keep the safety of passengers and to minimize the effect of damaged for vehicles. In this paper, it is described for carbody structure to meet the allowable condition in collision analysis through improvement of shape, position and arrangement for carbody frame. This report describes the shape of end frame for carbody structure and the results of analysis applied to actual cases for overseas.

  • In this study, the crash situations and general crash analysis methods of railway rolling stocks were explained. To calculate the applied load and the maximum stress in the carbody when two aluminum railway vehicles were shunted, the finite element models for the carbody and the coupling system were made. The characteristic curve of draft gear which had a function to reduce impact force was modeled by nonlinear bar elements and the carbody was modeled by shell elements. Two shunting speeds, 5km/h and 8km/h, were considered and the results were analyzed and compared with static analysis case. Also, the aluminum railway vehicle with 60km/h was crashed against rigid wall to examine the global behavior of the carbody.

  • The homogenization method is applied to maximize crash energy absorption for a given volume. To obtain the best combination of optimizing factors by resizing and threshold algorithms for an example problem, the sensitivity analysis has been performed using design of experiments. The results show that very little interaction among optimizing factors is found. Optimization analysis of several combination of factors is conducted; and the orignal design and a new design with holes for an example problem are compared for crash energy absorption.

버스의 승객안전도 평가방법 연구 (Investigation of Evaluation Method for Bus Occupant Safety)

  • In a previous study, an investigation of occupant behaviors and injuries (to the head and chest) was performed during vehicle impact loading cases in order to ensure the safety of wheelchair passengers on a bus. The computational results showed overall safety tolerances of wheelchair occupants under different accident configurations. The bus crashworthiness is described as the capability of a bus to protect occupants during rollover loadings. The residual space containing occupants should be undamaged without any intrusions. However it is necessary to evaluate the residual space according to the bus occupant kinematic analysis under the rollover crash simulation. This study focuses on the evaluation of occupant behaviors during rollover loading cases in order to ensure the safety of bus passengers sitting in general seats and wheelchairs and evaluates the residual space of the bus by analyzing the bus occupant kinematics.

  • This paper is concerned with the light-weight design of a center-pillar assembly for the high-speed side impact of vehicle using advanced high strength steels(AHSS). Steel industries continuously promote the ULSAB-AVC project for applying AHSS to structural parts as an alternative way to improve the crashworthiness and the fuel efficiency because it has the superior strength compared to the conventional steel. In order to simulate deformation behavior of the center-pillar assembly, a simplified center-pillar model is developed and parts of that are subdivided employing tailor-welded blanks(TWB) in order to control the deformation shape of the center-pillar assembly. The thickness of each part which constitutes the simplified model is selected as a design parameter. Factorial design is carried out aiming at the application and configuration of AHSS to simplified side-impact analysis because it needs tremendous computing time to consider all combinations of parts. In optimization of the center-pillar, S-shaped deformation is targeted to guarantee the reduction of the injury level of a driver dummy in the crash test. The objective function is constructed so as to minimize the weight and lead to S-shape deformation mode. Optimization also includes the weight reduction comparing with the case using conventional steels. The result shows that the AHSS can be utilized effectively for minimization of the vehicle weight and induction of S-shaped deformation.

일체형 시트의 충돌특성 개선을 위한 최적설계 (Optimization of the Integrated Seat for Crashworthiness Improvement)

  • 자동차 산업에서 안전에 대한 법적인 요구 및 시장 수요의 증가에 따라 강도와 경량화라는 안전과 환경에 대한 상반된 목적을 만족시켜야 하기 때문에 일체형 시트의 설계는 점점 더 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 미국시험규정 FMVSS210에 따라 외연적 유한 요소해석 프로그램인 LS-Dyna를 사용하여 시트 충돌해석을 수행하였다 하지만 충돌해석은 많은 해석시간을 요구하기 때문에 효율적이고 신뢰성 있는 최적설계기법이 요구된다. 따라서 통계적 기법인 실험계획법과 반응표면모델을 적용하여 많은 해석시간을 요구하는 LS-Dyna해석을 가능한 줄이고 비선형 최적설계 알고리즘을 적용하여 강도와 경량화를 동시에 최적화하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 실험계획법을 사용하여 최대 변위 및 총중량에 대한 설계영역을 탐색하고 반응표면모델을 구성하여 최적설계를 수행하였다.
