Optimized section shape of aluminum bumper backbeam for enhancing the front high speed crashworthiness was investigated. Front body analysis model of a convertible vehicle was built up and parameter studies were carried out with changing the inner rib shape and the section thickness distribution. First an inner rib shape displaying most efficient structural performance was selected. Next, for the selected section the effect of section thickness combination was examined. Also, a light weighed backbeam section displaying crash performance over the current design was suggested. Finally RCAR front low speed impact analyses were carried out for the optimized models.

The homogenization method is applied to maximize crash energy absorption for a given volume. Optimization analysis off closed-hat type example problem is conducted with different impact velocities and thicknesses. The results show that the bending-type deformation for the original design is changed to the folding-type deformation for a new design with a hole, which is partly due to the increase of the crash energy absorption for the new design. Dynamic mean crushing loads of the original and new design are compared with those by the theoretical equation by Wierzbicki. It shows that the dynamic mean crushing loads of new designs are very close to those by Wierzbicki's equation.

Vehicle components such as lower control arm are usually affected by heat during the welding process. As a result, residual stress is generated, which has much effect on mechanical performances such as crashworthiness and durability. In this study, the residual stress in lower control arm has been measured by the x-ray diffraction method and been analyzed by finite element methods. Heat transfer during seam weld process has been calculated and used in calculating thermal deformation with temperature dependent material properties. High residual stress has been found at vertical wall both by measurement and simulation. The simulation also showed the residual stress re-distribution when the component is subjected to cyclic loading condition.
This paper describe a (mite element computer simulation of a absorption system using full scale car crash test. The full scale test selected for this study is a 80kmh frontal, side and 25% offset impact of a 1993 Ford Taurus vehicle into a absorption system. This absorption system has external rubber and internal steel pannel. This simulation has completed for decision of these components energy absorption performance. Dynamical performance of this system and movement are obtained from this simulation. and then We can appreciate the safety of passenger from measure the vehicle C.G's acceleration.
A hot stamping technology of vehicle door impact beam made of thin sheet steel has been developed, with the aim of ensuring occupant safety in a side collision. This technology has been implemented to increase the strength of vehicle body parts and to reduce not only the weight of door impact beam but also the number of work processes. Mechanical tests were performed to obtain material properties of hot-stamped specimen and those were used as input data in stamping and structural simulation for optimal design of door impact beam. Strength of hot-stamped door impact beam increased to the value 102% higher than that of conventional pipe-shaped door impact beam and structural simulation showed that hot-stamped door impact beam achieved 28% weight reduction.
Steel bar breaking system is a component of a sled test system for automobile crashworthiness. It is a recent idea for the sled test. In a sled test, a crash pulse is given as a input made from a real test. The steel bar breaking system is designed to generate a certain crash pulse. Orthogonal arrays from design of experiments (DOE) are employed. The factors of the array are panel thickness and the number of steel bars, and the levels are candidate values of them. A simulation is utilized for the crash analysis. A commercial system called LS/DYNA3D is adopted. A test system is designed based on the results.
In this study, the crashworthy design guidelines for the high speed EMU were derived and numerically evaluated. As for this high speed train, there are several different features from the KTX in that the conventional type bogies are adopted and the front end car (TC car) accommodates passengers. It is natural that the impact acceleration of the front end car should be controlled under the appropriate level stipulated at safety regulations for collision accidents. Also, car-to-car interfacing structures and devices should be deliberately designed to prevent overriding and telescoping mechanisms. As the first step for these design countermeasures, it was studied that how much impact energy should be absorbed at the energy absorbing zones and devices of each carbody to satisfy the impact acceleration regulations of the safety regulations. These results will be used as the crashworthy design guidelines for the high speed train in the next year research.

The concrete median barriers are the most popular safety appurtenances that can be installed on narrow medians and are effective in keeping uncontrolled vehicles from crossing into opposing lanes of traffic. It is necessary to install and maintain median barriers because it is very difficult to reserve enough room required for medians in KOREA. And concrete median barriers are accepted as the actual alternatives for median barriers, mostly because they require almost no maintenance even after serious collisions. Typical concrete median barriers are 810mm high and have 596mm high glare screens on top of them. But we have experienced a number of “climb” and “roll-over” accidents of heavy vehicles until now, and most of all, there have been some serious accidents caused by the part of broken glare screens. We have performed many computer simulations for the evaluation of the crashworthiness of concrete median barriers, and through the simulations we have tried to find a proper type of concrete median barrier.
In general, the aluminum extrusions are used to the light construction of the high speed rail vehicle structures. However, the research works ok the crashworthy design of the high speed rail vehicle structures are not published sufficiently because the crash test of high speed rail vehicle structures costs high and is complicated. So, a method that can predict crash characteristics of a large size structure like a high speed tail vehicle should be suggested. In this study, the scale model studies are performed to predict the impact energy absorption characteristics of full scale model. In the first place, we verified the theory of scale law using FE-simulation from the crashworthiness point of view. Secondly, we performed the crush test using scale model, made of aluminum sub structure. As a result, we could predict the crash characteristics using scale model by 10∼20% error.
In this paper, an automated vehicle intersection collision accident was analyzed through simulation. Recently, the more automated vehicles are distributed, the more accidents related to automated vehicles occur. Accidents may show different trends depending on the sensor characteristics of the automated vehicle and the performance of the accident prevention system. Based on NASS-CDS (National Automotive Sampling System-Crashworthiness Data System) and TAAS (Traffic Accident Analysis System), four scenarios are derived and simulations are performed. Automated vehicles are applied with a virtual system consisting of an autonomous emergency braking system and algorithms that predict the route and avoid collisions. The simulations are conducted by changing the sensor angle, vehicle speed, the range of the sensor and vehicle speed range. A range of variables considered vehicle collision were derived from the simulation.
