The object of this work is to establish an electrochemical noise(EN) measurement technique combined with a direct current potential drop(DCPD) method for monitoring of localized corrosion cracking of nickel-based alloy, and to analyze its mechanism. The electrochemical current and potential noises were measured under various conditions of applied stress to a compact tension specimen in a simulated primary water chemistry of a pressurized water reactor. The amplitude and frequency of the EN signals were evaluated in both time and frequency domains based on a shot noise theory, and then quantitatively analyzed using statistical Weibull distribution function. From the spectral analysis, the effect of the current application in DCPD was found to be effectively excluded from the EN signals generated from the localized corrosion cracking. With the aid of a microstructural analysis, the relationship between EN signals and the localized corrosion cracking mechanism was investigated by comparing the shape parameter of Weibull distribution of a mean time-to-failure.

Cracks in reinforced concrete structures reduce overall durability by allowing the penetration of water and aggressive agents, thereby accelerating the deterioration of the reinforcing steel. Highway pavement and bridge decks are especially susceptible to this type of deterioration since these structures exhibit high rates of shrinkage and are frequently exposed to aggressive environmental conditions. The objectives of this investigation included the development of experimental procedures for assessing shrinkage cracking potential of recycled aggregate concrete, the evaluation of mix composition on shrinkage cracking potential, and the development of theoretical models to simulate early-age cracking behavior. Specifically, the influences of shrinkage-reducing admixture(SRA) and recycled aggregate concrete were investigated. The shrinkage-reducing admixture substantially reduces free shrinkage and restrains shrinkage cracking while providing similar mechanical properties. A fracture mechanics modeling approach was developed to predict the behavior of a variety of restrained concrete specimens. This modeling approach was used to successfully explain experimental results from a variety of mixture compositions. The model was used to demonstrate the influence of material and structural properties on the potential for cracking.
In Korea, attempts have been made to develop high strength concrete for the safety and design life improvement of nuclear power plants. In this study, the cracking potentials of nuclear power plant-high strength concretes (NPP-HSCs) containing industrial by-products with W/B 0.34 and W/B 0.28, which are being reviewed for their application in the construction of containment structures, were evaluated through autogenous shrinkage, unrestrained drying shrinkage, and restrained drying shrinkage experiments. The cracking potentials of the NPP-HSCs with W/B 0.34 and W/B 0.28 were in the order of 0.34FA25 > 0.34FA25BFS25 > 0.34BFS50 > 0.34BFS65SF5 and 0.28FA25SF5 >> 0.28BFS65SF5 > 0.28BFS45SF5 > 0.28 FA20BFS25SF5, respectively. The cracking potentials of the seven mix proportions excluding 0.28FA25SF5 were lower than that of the existing nuclear power plant concrete; thus, the durability of a nuclear power plant against shrinkage cracking could be improved by applying the seven mix proportions with low cracking potentials.

Cavitation can occur in pipes when liquid is moving at high velocity, especially at pittings where the smooth bore of the pipe is interrupted. The effect is usually to produce pitting on the downstream side of the turbulence. However, stress corrosion cracking behavior under cavitation erosion-corrosion was neatly unknown. In this study, therefore, some were investigated of stress corrosion cracking behavior, others were stress corrosion cracking behavior under cavitation erosion-corrosion of water injection. And datas obtained as the results of experiment were compared between the two. Mainresult obtained are as follows: 1) Stress corrosion cracking growth rate of heat affected zone under cavitation erosion-corrosion becomes most rapid, and stress intensity factor $K_1$becomes most high. 2) Stress corrosion cracking growth mechanism by cavitation erosion-corrosion is judgement on the strength of the film rupture model and the tunnel model. 3) The range of potential as passivation of heat affected zone is less noble than that of base metal, and that value is smaller. 4) Corrosion potential under cavitation erosion-corrosion in loaded stress is less noble than that of stress corrosion, and corrosion current density is higher.

The dependence of the corrosion potential on the stress corrosion cracking of 304 austenitic stainless steel was inspected by using the specimen of constant displacement type under the environment of 42% $MgCl_2$ boiled solution. The relationship of the corrosion potential to the intermittent propagation behaviour in stress corrosion cracking was cleared. As the results, a possible model of stress corrosion cracking of 304 austenitic stainless steel in $MgCl_2$ boiled solution was presented on the basis of the Film Rupture Model. This model is specified by the following process. Rupturing of passive film at notch tip .rarw. Dissolution of metal ion and formation of tunnel .rarw. Initiation of microcrack .rarw. Propagation of main crack .rarw. Recreation of passive film at new crack surface.
DC potential drop technique was employed during the slow strain rate tests to study the hot salt stress corrosion crack (HSSCC) initiation at 300 and $400^{\circ}C$. Threshold stresses for HSSCC initiation were found to about 88 % of the yield strength at both temperatures, but the time from crack initiation to final failure (${\Delta}t_{scc}$) decreased significantly with temperature, which reflects larger tendency for brittle fracture and secondary cracking. The brittle fracture features consisted of transgranular cracking through the primary ${\alpha}$ grain and discontinuous faceted cracking through the transformed ${\beta}$ grains.

High strength 7xxx aluminum alloys have been applied to automotive bump back beam of the some limited model for light weight vehicle. The aluminum bump back beam is manufactured through extrusion, bending and welding. The residual stress given on these processes combines with the corrosive atmosphere on the road spreaded with corrosive chemicals to melt snow to occur the stress corrosion cracking. The composition of commercial 7xxx aluminum has Zn/Mg ratio about 3 and Cu over 2 wt% for better strength and stress corrosion cracking resistivity. But this composition isn't adequate for appling to the automotive bump back beam with high resistance to extrusion and bad weldability. In this study the composition of 7xxx aluminum alloy was modified to high Zn/Mg ratio and low Cu content for better extrusion and weldability. To estimate the resistivity against stress corrosion cracking of this aluminum alloy by slow strain rate test, the corrosion atmosphere and strain rate separate the stress corrosion cracking from conventional corrosion must be investigated. Using 0.6 Mol NaCl solution on slow strain rate test the stress corrosion cracking induced fracture was not observed. By adding 0.3% $H_2O_2$ and 0.6M $Na_2SO_4$ to 1M NaCl solution, the corrosion potential and current density of polarization curve moved to active potential and larger current density, and on the slow strain rate test the fracture energy in solution was lower than that in pre-exposure. These mean the stress corrosion cracking induced fracture can be estimated in this 1M NaCl + 0.3% $H_2O_2$ + 0.6M $Na_2SO_4$ solution. When the strain rate was below $2{\times}10^{-6}$, the stress corrosion cracking induced fracture start to be observed.
To shorten the construction times of nuclear facility structures, three high-strength concrete mixtures were developed with specific consideration given to their curing temperatures, their economic efficiency, and the practicality of their quality control. This study was conducted to examine the temperature rise profiles of these three concrete mixtures and the potential for early-age thermal cracking in the primary containment vessel of a nuclear reactor with a wall thickness of 1200 mm. The one-layer placement height of the concrete for the primary containment vessel was increased from the conventional 3 m to 3.5 m. A nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted using the thermal properties of concrete determined from the isothermal hydration and adiabatic hydration tests, and tuned through comparisons made with temperature rise profiles obtained for 1200-mm-thick mock-up wall specimens cured at temperatures of 5, 20, and 35℃. The hydration heat performance of the three concrete mixtures and their potential to produce thermal cracking in nuclear facilities indicate that the mixtures have considerable potential for practical application to the primary containment vessel of a nuclear reactor at various curing temperatures, fulfilling the minimum requirements of the ACI 301 and minimizing the likelihood of the occurrence of thermal cracks.

In the present paper, for a quantitative assessment of early-age cracking in an RC wall, an improved analytical model is proposed. First of all, a three-dimensional finite element model for the analysis of stresses due to hydration heat and differential drying shrinkage is introduced. A discrete steel element derived using the equivalent nodal force concept is used to simulate reinforcing steels, embedded in a concrete matrix. In advance, to quantitatively calculate the cracking potential, an analytical model that can estimate the post-cracking behavior in an RC tension member is proposed Subsequent comparisons. of analytical results with test results verify that the combined use of both the finite element model for the stress analysis as well as the analytical model for the estimation of the post-cracking behavior in an RC tension member make it possible to accurately predict the cracking ,behavior of RC walls.

In this study, the effect of very fine sand on drying shrinkage cracking of concrete was experimentally evaluated. As a result of the study, the time-to-cracking of concrete used very fine sand was shorter than plain concrete. Also, the stress rate of concrete used very fine sand was higher than plain concrete. It was due to the increase of water content when very fine sand was used in concrete. In conclusion, the use of very fine sand can lead the increase of water content to meet the target slump and higher potential of cracking of concrete.
