Weldability, especially HAZ cold cracking, weld metal solidification cracking, and HAZ liquation cracking susceptibilities, of ASTM A356 CA6NM martensitic stainless steel casting was investigated and compared with that of 9-12% Cr ferritic steel castings. Irrespective of the Cr and Ni content in the castings, the HAZ maximum hardness increased with an increase of carbon content. CA6NM steel, which has the lowest carbon content, had the lowest HAZ hardness and showed no cold cracking in y-slit cracking tests. CA6NM steel, meanwhile, showed the largest weld metal solidification cracking susceptibility in varestraint tests because of its higher amount of impurity elements, phosphorus, and sulfur. All castings investigated had good high temperature ductility in hot ductility tests and showed little difference in liquation cracking susceptibility.
PURPOSES : The main purpose of this study is to develop a high elastic modulus and low-shrinkage roller-compacted concrete base (RCCB) in order to prevent fatigue cracking and reflective cracking in the asphalt surface layer of composite pavement. Using a rigid base material with low shrinkage can be a solution to this problem. Moreover, a strong rigid base with high elastic modulus is able to shift the location of critical tensile strain from the bottom of the asphalt layer to the bottom of the rigid base layer, which can prevent fatigue cracking in the asphalt layer. METHODS : Sensitivity analysis of composite pavement via numerical methods is implemented to determine an appropriate range of elastic modulus of the rigid base that would eliminate fatigue cracking. Various asphalt thicknesses and elastic moduli of the rigid base are used in the analysis to study their respective influences on fatigue cracking. Low-shrinkage RCC mixture, as determined via laboratory testing with various amounts of a CSA expansion agent (0%, 7%, and 10%), is found to achieve an appropriate low-shrinkage level. Shrinkage of RCC is measured according to KS F 2424. RESULTS : This study shows that composite pavements comprising asphalt thicknesses of (h1) 2 in. with E2 > 19 GPa, 4 in. with E2 > 15 GPa, and 6 in. with E2 > 11 GPa are able to eliminate tensile strain in the asphalt layer, which is the cause of fatigue cracking in this layer. Shrinkage test results demonstrate that a 10% CSA RCC mixture can reduce shrinkage by 84% and 93% as compared to conventional RCC and PCC, respectively. CONCLUSIONS : According to the results of numerical analyses using various design inputs, composite pavements are shown to be able to eliminate fatigue cracking in composite pavement. Additionally, an RCC mixture with 10% CSA admixture is able to reduce or eliminate reflective cracking in asphalt surfaces as a result of the significant shrinkage reduction in the RCC base. Thus, this low-shrinkage base material can be used as an alternative solution to distresses in composite pavement.
An increase in the amount of cracking in repaired concrete bridge decks using VES-LMC(Very Early Strength - Latex Modified Concrete ; below VES-LMC) has been noticed by Yun et al(1). Literature indicates that indeed many concrete bridge decks develop transverse cracking, most developing at early ages(3~7 days), many right after construction. The purpose of this study was to establish prevention of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control methods for minimizing the occurrence of cracks. The proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified by field applications. VES cement was modified, the unit cement contents was reduced into $360kg/m^3$ from $390kg/m^3$, the maximum size of coarse aggregate was increase into 19mm from 13mm, wire mesh and steel fibers were incorporated in concrete mixture. A series of variable combinations were attempted. As a results, the proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified because no crack were occurred until 90 days after overlay.
Considering the mechanical cracking in the concrete lining of tunnels occurring in relatively short period of time after the construction, there is a need for the study on the mechanical behavior and the cracking characteristics of double lining support system(shotcrete and concrete lining). For the proposed study, downscaled lining models of Kyung-Bu High Speed Railway tunnels were tested. Most longitudinal cracks at about 93 percentage developed within 30 arch degree from the vault. Cracking load was about 30 percentage of the failure load and the deflection under the cracking load was 10 percentage of the deflection under the failure load. The overbreak around the vault contributed to the reduction of the capacity for cracking and failure by the percentage greater than the reduced effective depth. Of several rock block types considered in this research, the triangular block was the most critical, and the right triangular block under eccentric load was secondly critical for the stability of the tunnel lining system. The dimensionless support reaction curves were derived from the experimental results for single and double lining. The general equation to compute the designed flexural moment was modified.

In particle or short-fiber reinforced composites cracking of the reinforcements is a significant damage mode because the broken reinformcements lose load carrying capacity . The average stress in the inhomogeneity represents its load carrying capacity and the difference between the average stresses of the intact and broken inhomogeneities indicates the loss of load carrying capacity due to cracking damage. The composite in damage process contains intact and broken reinforcements in a matrix, An incremental constitutive relation of particle or short-fiber reinforced composites including the progressive cracking damage of the reinforcements have been developed based on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka's mean field concept. influence of the cracking damage on the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and Mori-Tanaka's mean field concept. Influence of the cracking damage on the stress-strain response of the composites is demonstrated.
This study deals with thermomechanical cracking between the friction surface and the interior of the brake disc. Analytical model considered in this study was a semi-infinite solid subjected to the thermal loading of an asperity moving with a high speed. The temperature field and the thermal stress state were obtained and discussed on the basis of Von Mises and Tresca Yielding Criterion. Analytical results showed that the dominant stress in cracking of friction brake is thermal stress and cracking location is dependent on the friction coefficient of contact and Peclet number. On the basis of analytical results thermomechanical cracking model is proposed.
The shape of edge cracking in rolling process generally occurred "V" shape. This cracking is successively generated at width edge of strip. The edge cracking is developed to center of strip during rolling process. In the results, the strip is occurred fracture, and the productivity is gone down because of the extensive production time. Accordingly, we need to control crack propagation during rolling process. But, the control of cracking is very difficult in rolling process. Previously the studies of edge cracking were mainly performed on hot rolling process. In this paper, the shape of the edge cracking in rolling was estimated according to process conditions such as initial edge crack size, reduction ratio and tension using FE-simulation and the simplicity experiments on cold rolling process.
The rolling of flat slabs or sheet metal is probably the most advanced technique of metalworking technology. In spite of this very intensive activity, the problem if edge cracking has not been resolved. Although edge cracking is a major industrial problem, relatively little well-documented experimental work has been published on subject. Despite the paucity of exact experiments, it is reasonably certain from published data that three causes contribute to its occurrence; (1) limited ductility of the rolled material (2) uneven deformation at the edges and (3) variations in stresses along the width of the rolled material, particular near the edge. The present study was carried out to show the generation of edge cracking using ductile fracture criteria and FE-simulation. The validity of simulated results was verified by rolling experiments of steel strip.
This study has evaluated the liquation cracking behavior in the heat affected zone of several Ni base superalloys (Incoloy 825, Inconel 718 and Inconel 600). 304 and 310S austenitic stainless steels were also included for comparison. In addition, the mechanism of liquation cracking in the HAZ was postulated based on the extensive microstructural examinations with SEM, EDAX and TEM. The liquation cracking resistance of Ni base alloys was found to be far inferior to that of austenitic stainless steels. The liquation cracking of Incoloy 825 and Inconel 718 was believed to be closely related with the Laves-austenite(Ti rich in 825 and Nb rich in 718) and MC-austenitic eutectic phases formed along the grain boundaries by constitutional liquation and incipient melting under rapid welding thermal contraction. Further, liquation cracking resistance of the HAZ was dependent not only upon the type and amount of low melting phases but also on the grain size.
Recently, the underground reinforced concrete(RC) box structures have been increasingly built in Korea. In such structures, the heat of hydration may cause serious cracking problems. The RC box structures are classified in this category that needs much attention to control the hydration heat during construction, which causes the restraining effects on the boundaries. The purpose of the present study is to develop the rational construction method to control the thermal cracking problem of the box structures. In this study, the causes and mechanism of thermal cracking according to construction stages in the RC box structures are thoroughly analyzed. The major influencing variables are studied through the finite element analysis which affect the thermal cracking of RC box structures. The research results of the present study can be efficiently used for the control of cracking of box structures during construction stages.
