  • The general solution of the anti-plane shear problem for the curved interfacial crack between viscoelastic foam and composites was investigated with the complex variable displacement function. Kelvin-Maxwell three parameter model is used to present viscoelasticity and the Laplace transform was applied to treat the viscoelastic characteristics of foam in the analysis. The stress intensity factor near the interfacial crack tip was predicted by considering both anisotropic and viscoelastic properties of two different materials. The results showed that the stress intensity factor increased with increasing the curvature of the curved interfacial crack and it also increased and eventually converged to a specific value with increasing time. The stress intensity factor increased with increasing the ratio of stiffness coefficients between foam and composites and the effect of fiber orientation on the stress intensity factor decreased with increasing the ratio of stiffness coefficients between foam and composites.

  • This study aims to investigate the spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate for the friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy joints. Our previous fatigue crack growth test data are adopted in this investigation. To clearly understand the spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue crack growth tests were conducted under constant stress intensity factor range (SIFR) control testing. The experimental data were analyzed for two different materials-base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM)-to investigate the effects of spatial randomness of fatigue crack growth rate and material properties, the friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy joints, namely weld metal (WM) and base metal (BM). The results showed that the variability, as evaluated by Weibull statistical analysis, of the WM is higher than that of the BM.

  • Highly oriented ZnO thin films were fabricated by dip-coating technique using zinc acetate 2-methoxyethanol 2-aminoethanol solution as starting materials, and effects of substrates on the film's orientation were investigated. Product films were obtained by prefiring at 300, 400, 500 and 550℃ for 10 min, followed by final heat-treatment at the same temperatures as prefiring for 1h. c-axis oriented films on glass substrates were prepared by heat treatment of prefiring films at 300-550℃, while films on alumina showed polycrystalline structure. Films with c-axis orientation exhibited lower specific resistivities than those of polycrystalline films with partial crack and pore.

  • Silicon nitride based ceramics reinforced with 3wt% Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ whisker was prepared by tape casting to investigate the effect of microstructure on erosion behaviors. Hardness and fracture toughness were measured with prepared specimens. A gas blast type erosion tester was used to examine the erosion behavior of the specimens with different impact directions and angles. The erosion rate increases with increasing impact angle. Erosion rate of the silicon nitride ceramics also depends on the grain orientations, The erosion rate was lowered when impaction direction was parallel to the grain orientation This result was explained by the crack deflection and bridging due to the grain orientation.

  • Polycrystalline silicon was produced from metallurgical-grade Si by unidirectional solidification. Variations of impurity concentration and resistivity in the ingots have been investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis has also been performed to examine the crystal orientation. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis on the polycrystalline silicon, preferential orientation was changed from ( 220) into ( III ) with decreasing growth rate. Also, with increasing growth rate and fraction solidified, the resistivity tends to decrease.

  • Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of alcohol YBCO suspensions on the Ag wire electrode is studied. Poly(ethylene glycol) was coordinated to a structure formed by the EPD process with YBCO particles. The suspension is characterized in terms of zeta potential and conductivity. The d.c electric fields of 200-300 V/cm are applied for 1-10 min. The optimal condition for the EPD allows modifying the properties and microstructure of the deposited films. Superconducting coatings with nanometer-sized pores and a preferred orientation along the c-axis were prepared from the result with chemically modified precursor solution. In contrast, YBCO coatings of submicrometer-sized pores and randomly orientated grains were prepared from the solution without PEG.

  • A detailed finite element modeling is presented for the simulation of the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete structures which manages to predict the nonlinear behavior of four different experimental setups with computational efficiency, robustness and accuracy. The proposed modeling method uses 8-node hexahedral isoparametric elements for the discretization of concrete. Steel rebars may have any orientation inside the solid concrete elements allowing the simulation of longitudinal as well as transverse reinforcement. Concrete cracking is treated with the smeared crack approach, while steel reinforcement is modeled with the natural beam-column flexibility-based element that takes into consideration shear and bending stiffness. The performance of the proposed modeling is demonstrated by comparing the numerical predictions with existing experimental and numerical results in the literature as well as with those of a commercial code. The results show that the proposed refined simulation predicts accurately the nonlinear inelastic behavior of reinforced concrete structures achieving numerical robustness and computational efficiency.

  • Postulation of flaws, one of the most important areas in RPV integrity assessment, significantly affects the results. In the present work, several parameters, such as orientation, underclad vs. surface cracking, crack depth and shape, etc., are postulated and parametric studies are performed to investigate the influence of the flaw parameters on the structural integrity assessment of the reactor pressure vessel during pressurized thermal shock. The influence of individual parameters describing the crack is evaluated based on sensitivity study results.
