In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with two kinds of base metal, martensite stainless steel STR3 and austenite stainless steel STR35 and the dissimilar friction welded material with them. To compare the fatigue fifes according to the notch positions, the small circular defect was worked on the bonded line, 1.0mm and 0.5mm distance form the bonded line. The fatigue limits of the STR3 and STR35 base metal were 429.0MPa and 409.4MPa respectably. In comparison with fatigue life at the same notch positions, the STR35 specimens showed about 190% for base metal, 82% for 1.0mm distance notched specimens higher than that of the STR3. But the fatigue life of the 0.5mm distance notched STR35 specimen showed about 35% lower than that of the STR3 specimen. And the bonded line notched specimen was much lower fatigue life than the other specimens because of separation of the bonded line.
Fretting damage can be observed in automobile and railway vehicle, fossil and nuclear power plant, aircraft etc. In the present study, railway axle material RSA1 used for evaluation of fretting fatigue life. Plain and fretting fatigue tests were carried out using rotary bending fatigue tester with proving ring and bridge type contact pad. Through these test, the following results are obtained: 1) it is found that the fretting fatigue limit of standard specimen decreased about 37% compared to the plain fatigue limit. 2) The early crack of Shinkansen type specimens initiated in contact area and final fractured below samp=214 MPa. 3) The early crack of all TGV type specimens initiated in rounded area and fractured. 4) Tire tracks and rubbed scars were observed in the oblique crack region and fatigue crack growth region of fracture surface. 5) The wear debris is observed on the contact surface, and oblique cracks at an earlier stage are initiated in contact area. These results can be used as useful data in a structural integrity evaluation of railway axle.
A surface crack in a semi-infinite body under Hertzian contact was considered. The simplified method used to estimate stress intensity factor K for specimen was extended to the model which is chosen in this paper. Very satisfactory results are obtained comparing with those known and it is proved that the method is more convenient than other methods. The results of the analysis show that due to the presence of $K_I$ for unlubricated condition, mode I fracture is active in the field below the surface and the maximum $K_{I}$ is obtained when the trailing edge of Hertzian contact reaches a position over the crack. The magnitudes of stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_Il$ increase with increasing friction forces. For a surface crack perpendicular to the contact surface, the stress intensity factor $K_I$ reaches its maximum value at a depth very close to the surface. Driving forve fer crack initiation and propagation is $K_I$ for unlubricated condition and $K_Il$ for both fluid and boundary lubricated condition.n.
In this study, using high cycle fatigue (HCF) criteria, the simulation of rolling contact fatigue is conducted under elliptical contact. The HCF criteria fall into three categories: the critical plane approach, the stress invariant approach and the approach based on the mesoscopic scale. The accurate calculation of contact stresses and subsurface stresses is essential to the prediction of crack initiation life. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions and the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. The simulation results show that the critical load is decreasing rapidly and the site of crack initiation also moves rapidly to the surface from the subsurface when the friction coefficient exceeds a specific value for all of three fatigue criteria.
Currently, the use of carbon steel in a high temperature environment, such atomic reactor, increases. Test piece was heated in electric furnace and the prescribed temperature was controlled within ${\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Debris that falls apart from cracked section due to friction is accumulated inside. Then, as it causes fretting corrosion (formation of oxide layer), it contributes to crack closure.
In the disk braking of the railway trains, kinetic energy of the vehicles is converted into thermal energy by friction between a brake disk and the pad materials. This can be cause of the iterative thermal shock and generates thermal cracks on the brake disk surface. In this study, we show the comparative thermal fatigue test procedures and thermal crack analysis process to evaluate the thermal fatigue characteristics of candidate materials designed for development of heat-resistant brake disk material. We carried out tests on the conventional brake disk materials used for Saemaul and Mugunghwa trains, then we comparatively analyzed the thermal crack initiation and propagation on the surface of a specimen. A thermal fatigue test procedure and a crack analysis process were suggested to evaluate the heat resistance of the developed materials at later studies.
A mechanical model was developed to predict the behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without stirrups. It is commonly accepted by most researchers that a diagonal tension crack plays a predominant role in the failure mode of these beams, but the failure mechanism of these members is still debatable. In this paper, it was assumed that diagonal tension failure was triggered by the concrete cover splitting due to the dowel action at the initial location of diagonal tension cracks, which propagate from flexural cracks. When concrete cover splitting occurred, the shape of a diagonal tension crack was simultaneously developed, which can be determined from the principal tensile stress trajectory. This fictitious crack rotates onto the crack tip with load increase. During the rotation, all forces acting on the crack (i.e, dowel force of longitudinal bars, vertical component of concrete tensile force, shear force by aggregate interlock, shear force in compression zone) were calculated by considering the kinematical conditions such as crack width or sliding. These forces except for the shear force in the compression zone were uncoupled with respect to crack width and sliding by the proposed constitutive relations for friction along the crack. Uncoupling the shear forces along the crack was aimed at distinguishing each force from the total shear force and clarifying the failure mechanism of RC slender beams without stirrups. In addition, a proposed method deriving the dowel force of longitudinal bars made it possible to predict the secondary shear failure. The proposed model can be used to predict not only the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender shear beams, but also the ultimate shear strength. The experiments used to validate the proposed model are reported in a companion paper.
The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the improvement method for the failure examples including the vehicle brake system in actual field. It was verified that the indicator plate of pad wear scratched the brake disk because of wearing after displacement of non- identification parts pad. The caliper of other vehicle was installed with brake system verified the phenomenon produced groove in center point because of one side wear when the pad was not fully contacted with the rub disk by other action surface pressure and pad action condition. It verified that the crack phenomenon fatigue was produced by brake thermal deformation because of decreasing the thickness by grinding to modify the non-uniformed wear of brake disk. It verified that the friction sound was produced by the friction phenomenon because of non-uniformed contact of lining and an alien substance with inner of the drum and lining braking by crack phenomenon with brake drum surface.
The reinforced concrete lining of hydraulic pressure tunnels tends to crack under high inner water pressure (IWP), which results in the inner water exosmosis along cracks and involves typical hydro-mechanical interaction. This study aims at the development, validation and application of an indirect-coupled method to simulate the lining cracking process. Based on the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model, the utility routine GETVRM and the user subroutine USDFLD in the finite element code ABAQUS is employed to calculate and adjust the secondary hydraulic conductivity according to the material damage and the plastic volume strain. The friction-contact method (FCM) is introduced to track the lining-rock interface behavior. Compared with the traditional node-shared method (NSM) model, the FCM model is more feasible to simulate the lining cracking process. The number of cracks and the reinforcement stress can be significantly reduced, which matches well with the observed results in engineering practices. Moreover, the damage evolution of reinforced concrete lining can be effectively slowed down. This numerical method provides an insight into the cracking process of reinforced concrete lining in hydraulic pressure tunnels.
Friction welding has may merits such as energy efficiency, simple processing, etc. but it is difficult to obtain good welding at the welded interfaces and heat affected zone. It is discovered that stress singularity exists at the interferes and heat affected zone. The computer program based on boundary element method is utilized in this study. A mathematical model is implemented based on results from several experiments performed at and around the welded interfaces and heat affected zone of disimilar metals under static and dynamic loadings. This stay is to investigate the characteristics of the deformation and fracture behavior around interfaces for friction welded materials under static tensile load. Also, the stress distribution at the tip of crack is analyzed by using BU based on Kelvin's solution of 2-dimensional binding zone. The results of BEM are identical with those in case of considering interfaces of both heat affected zone. Also, stress singularity at the tip of interfaces appears when the elastic modulus ratio is 1.07.
