In this paper, the computer simulations are carried out by using the peridynamic theory model with various conditions including quasi-static loads, dynamic loads and crack propagation, branching crack pattern and isotropic materials, orthotropic materials. Three examples, a plate with a hole under quasi-static loading, a plate with a pre-existing crack under dynamic loading and a lamina with a pre-existing crack under quasi-static loading are analyzed by computational simulations. In order to simulate the quasi-static load, an adaptive dynamic relaxation technique is used. In the orthotropic material analysis, a homogenization method is used considering the strain energy density ratio between the classical continuum mechanics and the peridynamic. As a result, crack propagation and branching cracks are observed successfully and the direction and initiation of the crack are also captured within the peridynamic modeling. In case of applying peridynamic used homogenization method to a relatively complicated orthotropic material, it is also verified by comparing with experimental results.

The structural intensities have been applied to understand a source point and the path of vibrational energy flows in interested structures by many researchers. In this paper, a feasibility study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of a damaged beam with a inflicted open crack using the structural intensities. The damaged beam was taken as a continuous system with equivalent bending stiffness and the flexural vibrations were only considered in numerical simulation and experiments. A four(4)-transducer array was used to measure the flexural vibrations of the beam and the structural intensities were estimated by means of cross spectral density method. As a result, the magnitude changes of the structural intensities could be observed in the vicinity of the damage location and a damage index was newly proposed to identify the damage zone. It has been confirmed that the measurement of the structural intensities was simple and effective method to find out the damage zone.
Irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking (IASCC) is one of the main degradation mechanisms of austenitic stainless steels, which are used as reactor internal materials. Slow strain rate testing (SSRT) has been widely applied to evaluate the IASCC initiation characteristics of proton-irradiated tensile specimens. Tensile specimens require low surface roughness for micro-crack observation, and electropolishing is the most important specimen pre-treatment process used for this. In this study, optimal electropolishing conditions were examined through analyzing results of polarization experiments and surface roughness measurements after electropolishing. Corrosion cell and electropolishing equipment were fabricated for polarization tests and electropolishing experiments using SSRT specimens. The experimental parameters were electropolishing time, current density, electrolyte temperature, and stirring speed. The optimal electropolishing conditions for SSRT tensile specimens made of type 316 stainless steel were evaluated as a polishing time of 180 seconds, a current density of 0.15 A/cm2, an electrolyte temperature of 60 ℃, and a stirring speed of 200 RPM.

Two different gas diffusion layers having noticeable differences in micro-porous layer's (MPL's) crack were studied as a substrate for the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) with different binder/carbon (B/C) ratios in high-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (Ht-PEMFC). As a result, the performance defined as the voltage at 0.2 A/cm2 and maximum power density from the single cells using GDEs from H23 C2 and SGL38 BC with different B/C ratios were compared. GDEs from H23 C2 showed a proportional increase of the voltage with the binder content on the other hand GDEs from SGL38 BC displayed a proportional decline of the voltage to the binder content. It was revealed that MPL crack influences the structure of catalyst layer in GDEs as well as affects the RCathode which is in close connection with the Ht-PEMFC performance.

Based on a bond-based peridynamics theory for dynamic crack propagation problems, this paper presents a design sensitivity analysis and optimization method. Peridynamics has a peculiar advantage over the existing continuum theory in the mathematical modelling of problems where discontinuities arise. For the design optimization of the crack propagation problems, a non-shape design sensitivity is derived using the adjoint variable method. The obtained adjoint sensitivity of displacement and strain energy turns out to be very accurate and efficient compared to the finite different sensitivity. The obtained design sensitivities are futher utilized to optimally control the position of bifurcation point in the design optimization of crack propagation in a plate under tension. A numerical experiment demonstrates that the optimal distribution of material density could delay the position of bifurcation.
From measured responses of concrete three-point bend tests, the average values of the responses have been calculated. The fracture behavior of continuously propagating concrete crack has been analyzed from the average responses. The experimental parameters of this study were the initial notch sizes of 25.4㎜ and 6.4 ㎜ and the processing times of 2,000 sec. and 20 sec . The different notch sizes were used for the effects of the size of fracture process zone and specimen geometry, and the processing times for those of initial creep. However the load-point displacement rate in this study did not affect the experimental responses seriously. The average loads were calculated from the average external work of a series of tests, and average crack lengths were determined by using strain gages. Before the peak load, the resistance curve could be determined from the size of fracture process zone, but unstable crack propagation of 88㎜ occurred at the load-point displacement of 0.088∼0.154㎜ after the peak load. The average fracture energy density G$\_$F/$\^$ave/ = 115 N/m occurred during the unstable crack propagation. The fracture process zones were fully developed at the crack length of 111㎜, and the sizes of fracture process zone for initial notches of 25.4㎜ and 6.4㎜ were 86㎜ and 105㎜, respectively. Average fracture energy densities of the resistance curves after full development of fracture process zone were 229 N/m for the initial notch of 25.4㎜ and 284 N/m for 6.4㎜. The values were more than twice of G$\_$F/$\^$ave/.
The nanoimprint lithography technology makes higher density of semiconductor device and larger capacity of storage media. In this technology the induced damage while detaching polymer pattern from mold should be minimized. In order to analyze the problem, the basic knowledge of adhesion between the polymer and the mold is required. In this study a contact experiment of polyisobutylene specimen with spherical steel tip and polyisobutylene bead tip was conducted using nano indenter. During the contact experiment with various loading rate under load control the contact behavior of viscoelastic material was measured, i.e., the load and displacement between the tip and the specimen were measured. The data was analyzed by HBK model to obtain the stress intensity factor of contact edge and the contact radius as a function of time. Also the adhesion energies between steel/polyisobutylene and polyisobutylene/polyisobutylene were obtained employing the analysis of the crack of viscoelastic material by Schapery.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate fracture toughness on the Laser and the electron beam welded joints of high tensile steels (HT500, HT550, HT650) by using 3-point bend CTOD and Charpy impact test. WM (weld metal) CTOD tests have been carried out using two kinds of CTOD specimen, the Laser beam welding (108mm length, and 24mm width, and 12mm thickness) and the electron beam welding (l71mm length, and 38mm width, and 19mm thickness). WM Charpy impact specimen is a standard V-notch type, and the temperature of the experiment is changed from -45 to 20 degree of centigrade. FE-analysis is also performed in order to investigate the effect of stress-strain fields on fracture characteristics. Results of the standard V-notch Charpy test are influenced by strength mis-match effect and the absorbed energy vE depends on crack path, and The transition temperature of Laser beam welded joints is more higher than that of electron beam welded joints. Results of the 3-point bend test give low critical CTOD and the crack path is in the weld metal of al specimens. These results indicate fracture toughness characteristics of the welded joints and transition temperature of HT500 are similar both a Laser beam welded joint and an electron beam welded joint. But the fracture toughness and the transition temperature of the electron beam welded joints of HT550 and HT650 are higher than those o the Laser beam welded joints.
Fracture analysis of coating cracking on a substrate system described in a companion paper was applied and verified by four-point bending tests. The multiple cracking of coating was predicted using a fracture mechanics approach. The strain energy release rate (G) due to the formation of a new crack in a coating was obtained. A crack density vs. strain data of metallic and polymeric substrate was used to get the in-situ fracture toughness of coating with respect to various baking time and temperature. The $G_c$ was decreased as the baking temperature and time was increased. This paper gave insight about usefulness of four-point bending test for fracture toughness evaluation of coating and it gave a new method for in-situ coating toughness.

Traditional theories of the tensile failure of paper have assumed that uniform strain progresses throughout the sheet until an imperfection within the structure causes a catastrophic break. The resistance to tensile elongation is assumed to be elastic , at first, throughout the structure, followed by an overall plastic yield. However, linear image strain analysis (LISA) has demonstrated that the yield in tensile loading of paper is quite non-uniform throughout the structure, Traditional theories have failed to define the flaws that trigger catastrophic failure. It was assumed that a shive or perhaps a low basis weight area filled that role. Studies of the fracture mechanics of paper have typically utilized a well-defined flaw around which yield and failure could be examined . The flaw was a simple razor cut normal to the direction of tensile loading. Such testing is labeled mode I analysis. The included fla in the paper was always normal to the tensile loading direction, never at another orientation . However, shives or low basis weight zones are likely to be at random angular orientations in the sheet. The effects of angular flaws within the tensile test were examined. The strain energy density theory and experimental work demonstrate the change in crack propagation from mode I to mode IIas the initial flaw angle of crack propagation as a function of the initial flaw angle is predicted and experimentally demonstrated.
