A Study on Why Breastfeeding be Interrupted and Knowledge of Breastfeeding (일부 지역에 거주하는 영아어머니의 모유수유의 중단이유와 모유수유 지식정도에 관한 조사연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the reason of interruption and the knowledge of breastfeeding. The samples of 117 mothers who have the babies between age from 1 month to 12 months were selected from one university hospital and one public health care center in J City. The data were collected with the questionnaire during the period from the January. 5. 2002 through January. 30. 2002. Analysis was done by using frequency. percentage. t-test. ANOVA. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The comparison of the method of feeding by general characteristics. income state(p= .019), rearing supporters(p=.026) and infant age(p=.03) have shown significant difference as the variables affecting breastfeeding practice rate. Breastfeeding rate were 24.8%. mixed- feeding type, 14.5%. milkfeeding type. 60.7%. 2. The major reason which breastfeeding be done was 'for health of baby'. In the period of breastfeeding, a large number of mothers answered' up to. 6 months'. The major reason of breasttfeeding interruption was 'insufficient quantity of breastmilk'. 3. The mean of knowledge on breastfeeding by feeding patterns were the highest in the breastfeeding group(F= 10.228, p= .000). 4. In a grade of each item on knowledge of breastfeeding, over 80% of mothers wrongly answered in two items; components comparison between breastmilk and cow's milk and when the mother fell sick. whether she have to be feed breastmilk. or not. In the conclusion. this study revealed that knowledge of breastfeeding promoted practice of breastfeeding. However we suggest that systemic and supportive breastfeeding program for promoting the knowledge and the practice rate of breastfeeding have to be provided by nurses.

Laxative Choice and Treatment Outcomes in Childhood Constipation: Clinical Data in a Longitudinal Retrospective Study

  • Purpose: Functional constipation (FC) is a common gastrointestinal (GI) problem affecting children's well-being and quality of life. Although polyethylene glycol (PEG) is recommended as the first line therapy, it is not always applicable in lower socioeconomic populations. Hence, this study aimed to compare clinical courses of FC in children treated with different medications in order to identify prognostic factors related to treatment outcomes. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients aged ${\leq}15$ years diagnosed with FC according to the Rome IV criteria from 2007 to 2015 at the GI clinic, Songklanagarind Hospital. Baseline characteristic, medical history, and treatment outcomes were collected at first and subsequent visits. Results: Exactly104 patients (median age at diagnosis, 2.8 years) were diagnosed with FC. The number of follow-up visits per patient ranged from 1 to 35. The median duration of follow-up was 18.0 months (range, 6.0-84.2 months). PEG was given to 21% of patients. During the follow up period, 76% of patients experienced first recovery with a median time to recovery of 9.8 months. There were no significant differences in time until first recovery and relapse between patients who received and those who did not receive PEG (p=0.99 and 0.06, respectively). Age >6 years, normal defecation frequency, no history of cow's milk protein allergy, and use of laxatives were associated with successful outcomes. Conclusion: Treatment outcomes between patients who had and never had PEG demonstrated no significant difference in our study. Hence, current practices in laxative prescriptive patterns may be effective.

Relationship Between the Incidence of Displaced Abomasum and Feeding of Cows in Tokachi District, Hokkaido, Northern Japan

  • In order to investigate the relationship between the incidence of displaced abomasum and feeding, the actual feeding practices and chemical compositions of roughage were examined in 2 kinds of farms at Tokachi district in Hokkaido. Examination of animal health records revealed that the annual milk yield per cow in high incidence (H-DA) farms was significantly higher than that in low incidence (L-DA) farms. The amount of concentrates fed in H-DA farms tended to be higher than that in L-DA farms during lactation. Compared to L-DA farms, the amount of juicy roughage (corn silage and grass silage) and dry roughage (hay, hay cube and roll wrap silage) during lactation in H-DA farms tended to be higher and lower, respectively. Moreover, the amount of roughage and the ratio of roughage to concentrates in H-DA farms tended to be lower than in L-DA farms. The survey indicated that displaced abomasum was associated with insufficient feeding of dietary fiber and overfeeding of concentrates.

Induction of Regulatory Dendritic Cells by Lactobacillus paracasei L9 Prevents Allergic Sensitization to Bovine β-Lactoglobulin in Mice

  • Supplementation with probiotics can protect against the development of food allergies by modulating the host immune response; however, the mechanisms are not fully understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the allergy-reducing effects of regulatory dendritic cells (regDCs) induced by Lactobacillus paracasei L9 (L9) in β-lactoglobulin (BLG)-sensitized mice. The L9 supplement suppressed the aberrant balance of Th1/Th2 responses to BLG in mice, via upregulation of the CD4+CD25+Foxp3+Treg cell responses. The amount of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+Treg cells in mesenteric lymph nodes increased by 51.85%. Furthermore, administration of L9 significantly induced the expression of CD103 and reduced the maturation status of DCs in mesenteric lymph nodes, Peyer's patches, and spleen. Bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BM-DCs) were activated by L9 in vitro, with an approximate 1.31-fold and 19.57-fold increase in expression of CD103 in CD11c+DCs and the level of IL-10 production, respectively, while the expression of CD86 did not change significantly. These data demonstrate that L9 reduced the BLG allergic sensitization, likely through regDCs mediated active suppression.

Maternal Perception of the Newborn and Confidence and Gratification of Mothering Role (어머니의 신생아 지각, 역할 수행에 대한 자신감 및 만족감)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate maternal perception of the newborn, confidence and gratification of mothering role, and contribute to maternal nursing and neonatal nursing. The questionnaire, maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅰ) was completed by 47 mothers at three hospitals in the Kyoung-In area during the first to third day after birth. The questionnaire, maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅱ), confidence and gratification of mothering role were completed at fourth to sixth week after birth. The data were analyzed by a SPSS program. The results were as follows ; 1) The means of perception of the newborn(Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ) were 2.28±4.81 and 3.83±4.84. The means of confidence and gratification of mothering role were 40.38±5.51 and 39.30±6.70. 2) Half of the mothers(48.9%) rated their newborn as better than average newborn at first to third day after birth, and 74.5% of mothers did at fourth to sixth week after birth. 3) The score of maternal perception of the newborn (Ⅰ) was significantly correlated with the score of confidence and gratification of mothering role. The score of maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅱ) was correlated with the score of confidence and gratification of mothering role. The score of confidence and gratification of mothering role was related. 4) Maternal gratification of mothering role was significantly different by maternal perception of the newborn(Ⅰ), and maternal confidence was different by maternal perception of the newborn (Ⅱ). 5) Mothers who had religions and who wanted the pregnancy had higher perception of the newborn(Ⅰ) than those who did not. Mothers whose newborns were boys had higher perception of the newborn(Ⅱ) than those whose newborns were girls. Mothers who wanted the pregnancy had higher confidence of mothering role than those who did not. Mothers who planed cow's milk had lower gratification of mothering role than those who did not. The above findings indicate that mothers who have a different level of perception of the newborn, confidence and gratification of mothering role. Therefore, it is important that maternal perception of the newborn, confidence and gratification of mothering role were precisely evaluated, and nursing intervention for improving perception of the newborn should be provided for mothers.

Prevalence of yeasts in bovine mammary gland infections and teat cups of milking machines (효모균에 의한 젖소 유방염과 유두컵내의 오염상태)

  • The prevalence of yeasts in mammary glands of dairy cows and teat cups of milking machines was studied in Chinju area. The rate of subclinical yeast infection in 330 quarters was 3.6%. Of 12 isolates from the milk, 4 Candida pseudotropicalis, 3 C tropicalis, 2 C krusei, 2 C albicans and 1 Rhodotorula spp were identified. The 91.7% of the isolates belonged to the genus Candida and C pseudotropicalis was the predominant species. From 20.5% of 200 teat cups tested, 51 strains of yeasts were isolated. These were 13 C pseudotropicalis, 9 C guilliermondii, 7 C tropicalis, 5 C krusei, 5 C parapsilosis, 3 C albicans, 2 Torulopsis glabrata, 2 Geotrichum candidum and 5 unidentified yeasts. C pseudotropicalis was most frequently encountcred.

Application of a Simulation Model for Dairy Cattle Production Systems Integrated with Forage Crop Production: the Effects of Whole Crop Rice Silage Utilization on Nutrient Balances and Profitability

  • In Japan, since rice consumption has been decreasing with the westernization of Japanese eating habits, surplus paddy fields have been increasing. If these surplus paddy fields can be utilized for forage rice production as feed for animal production and excretions (feces and urine) from animal production can be applied to the paddy fields as manure, then the problems of surplus paddy fields and excretions from animal production may be solved, and the environment kept sustainable. The objectives of the present study were to apply a bio-economic model to dairy and forage rice integration systems in Japan and to examine the merit of introducing whole crop rice silage (WCRS), as well as economic and environmental effects of various economic and management options in the systems. Five simulations were conducted using this model. The use of WCRS as a home-grown feed increased environmental loads and decreased economic benefit because of the higher amount of purchased feed, when compared to the use of typical crops such as maize, alfalfa and timothy silage (simulation 1). Higher economic benefits from higher forage rice yields and higher milk production of a dairy cow were obtained (simulations 2, 3). There were no economic and environmental incentives for utilizing crude protein (CP) rich WCRS, because an increase in the CP content in WCRS led to the use of more chemical fertilizers, resulting in high production costs and nitrogen outputs (simulation 4). When evaluated under the situation of a fixed herd size, increasing forage rice yields decreased the total benefit of the production, in spite of the fact that the amount of subsidies per unit of land increased (simulation 5). It was indicated that excess subsidy support may not promote yield of forage rice. It was, however, observed in most cases that dairy and forage rice integration systems could not be economically established without subsidies.

Physiochemical Characteristics of Lactobacillus acidophilus KH-l Isolated from the Feces of a Breast-Fed Infant

  • Three lactobacillus strains, two from infant feces, and one from cow's milk, were selected among 172 isolates, from multiple sources, for further study based on the antimicrobial activities against six strains of pathogenic bacteria and identified as Lactobacillus acidophilus. The strains revealed a wide scope of spectrum against pathogenic bacteria. Viable Lactobacillus acidophilus KH-l cell counts at pH 2.0 were slightly decreased to $1.42\times10^7$ CFU/mL from $4.18\times10^7$ CFU/mL, while remaining at $3.42\times10^7$ CFU/mL at pH 4.0 with the survival rate of $33.97\%\;and\;81.82\%$, respectively. At the concentration of $0.1\%$ oxgall, L acidophilus KH-l kept growing up to $3.12\times10^7$ CFU/mL with a mean growth rate constant (k) of 0.25, and cell number was slightly decreased to $1.21\times10^7$ CFU/mL (k=0.19) with $0.3\%$ oxgall, but remained at $7.6\times10^6$ CFU/mL (k=0.17) with $0.5\%$ oxgall. L. acidophilus KH-l had a $D_{60}$ value of 7.14, with viable cell numbers $1.4\times10^5$ CFU/mL after heat treatment at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Stability of L acidophilus KH-l at $-20^{\circ}C$ was significantly higher, when the strain was cultivated under the optimum growth temperature $(54.41\%\;and\;54.35\%)$ than at the temperature $(13.53\%)$.

Water Quality Prediction and Forecast of Pollution Source in Namgang Mid-watershed each Reduction Scenario (남강중권역 오염부하 전망 및 삭감 시나리오별 하류 수질예측)

  • Namgang mid-watershed is located in downstream of Nakdong river basin. There are many pollution sources arround this area and it's control is important to manage a water quality of Nakdong river. A target year of Namgang mid-watershed water environment management plan is 2013. To predict a water quality at downstream of Namgang, we have investigated and forecasted the pollutant source and it's loading. There are some plan to construction the sewage treatment plants to improve the water quality of Nam river. Those are considered on predicting water quality. As results, it is shown that the population is 343,326 and sewerage supply rate is 79.2% and the livestock is 1,662,000 in Namgang mid-watershed. It is estimated that the population is 333,980, the sewerage supply rate is 86.9% in 2013. The milk cow and cattle were estimated upward and the pigs were downward by 2013. The generated loading of BOD and TP is 75,957 kg/day and 4,311 kg/day, discharged loading is 18,481 kg/day and 988 kg/day respectively in 2006. It were predicted upward the discharged loading of BOD and TP by 4.08% and 6.3% respectively. The results of water quality prediction of Namgang4 site were 2.5 mg/L of BOD and 0.120 mg/L of TP in 2013. It is over the target water quality at that site in 2015 about 25.0% and 9.1% respectively. Consequently, there need another counterplan to reduce the pollutants in that mid-watershed.

Physicochemical and Sensorial Properties of Probiotic Yogurt as Affected by Additions of Different Types of Hydrocolloid

  • The main attributes of yogurt that affect consumer satisfaction are taste, consistency, and a firm texture. This study evaluates the influence of xanthan gum, barley beta-glucan, and guar gum in concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3% on probiotic yogurt. The set-type yogurt samples were prepared by using raw cow's milk. The statistical analysis showed that none of these gum additions had any marked effect on pH, titratable acidity, total solids content, and probiotic bacteria counts of yogurt samples. Evaluations for syneresis and water-holding capacity (WHC) in the yogurt samples were affected by the type and concentration of the stabilizer. Yogurts treated with 0.1% xanthan gum and 0.3% beta-glucan recorded the highest WHC and the least syneresis. The largest amount of gel firmness was recorded in yogurt samples treated with 0.2% xanthan gum and 0.3% beta-glucan. Yogurt samples treated with 0.1% xanthan gum and 0.3% beta-glucan were considered acceptable by trained panelists and gained the highest scores in sensory evaluations. The correlation coefficient between the amount of syneresis, WHC and stiffness of texture was significant compared to scores for sensory evaluation (p<0.01). Results for effects of guar gum on the tested parameters were contrary to the results expected from a gum. According to this study, the use of xanthan gum and beta-glucan are highly recommended for low-fat yogurt production.
