  • This paper proposes distributed file placement and coverage expansion techniques for mitigating the traffic bottleneck in backhaul for small-cell networks. In order to minimize the backhaul load with limited memory space, the proposed scheme controls the coverage and file placement of base station according to file popularity distribution and memory space of base stations. In other words, since the cache hit ratio is low when there is small memory capacity or widespread file popularity distribution, the base stations expand its coverage and cache different set of files for the user located in overlapped area to exploit multiple cached file sets of base stations. Our simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional cache strategy in terms of network throughput when there is small memory capacity or widespread file popularity distribution.

  • In this paper, we consider an OFDM receiver algorithm design for IEEE 802.11a/p system, which targeting large coverage area while keeping the transmission format unchanged. Particularly, taking into account the inter-symbol interference(ISI) and inter-carrier interference(ICI) that can be induced with large RMS delay spread, we employ channel shortening time-domain equalizer(TEQ) and evaluate the receiver performance in terms of SINR and packet error rate(PER). The preamble defined in IEEE802.11a/p is used to estimated the initial equalizer tap coefficients. Primary purpose of the paper is to give an answer to the question, though partially, whether or not 16-QAM constellation can be used in none line of sight environment at the boundary of a large coverage area. To this end, we first analyze the required TEQ parameters for the target channel environment and then perform simulation for PER performance evaluation in a generic frequency selective fading channel with exponential power-delay profile.

  • With the development of the NB-IoT (Narrow band Internet of Things) and smart cities, coupled with the emergence of smart smoke sensors, new requirements and issues have been introduced to study on the deployment of sensors in large spaces. Previous research mainly focuses on the optimization of wireless sensors in some monitoring environments, including three-dimensional terrain or underwater space. There are relatively few studies on the optimization deployment problem of smart smoke sensors, and leaving large spaces with obstacles such as libraries out of consideration. This paper mainly studies the deployment issue of smart smoke sensors in large spaces by considering the fire probability of fire areas and the obstacles in a monitoring area. To cope with the problems of coverage blind areas and coverage redundancy when sensors are deployed randomly in large spaces, we proposed an optimized deployment strategy of smart smoke sensors based on the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm. The deployment problem is transformed into a multi-objective optimization problem with many constraints of fire probability and barriers, while minimizing the deployment cost and maximizing the coverage accuracy. In this regard, we describe the structure model in large space and a coverage model firstly, then a mathematical model containing two objective functions is established. Finally, a deployment strategy based on PSO algorithm is designed, and the performance of the deployment strategy is verified by a number of simulation experiments. The obtained experimental and numerical results demonstrates that our proposed strategy can obtain better performance than uniform deployment strategies in terms of all the objectives concerned, further demonstrates the effectiveness of our strategy. Additionally, the strategy we proposed also provides theoretical guidance and a practical basis for fire emergency management and other departments to better deploy smart smoke sensors in a large space.

  • The ROK military uses Performance Based Logistics(PBL) as one of the ways to utilize civilian resources and advanced techniques. However, the Korean PBL is mainly focused on purchasing and repairing parts, which is not contributing to the improvement of the availability of overall system. The objective of this study is to suggest the methodology to evaluate the PBL metrics using the simulation and meta model. A meta model is a regression model to analyze the effect of the PBL through simulating various scenarios with performance metrics. As a result, if the PBL is limited to the part level, the performance has little influence on the availability of overall system. In addition, analysis using the meta model shows that it cannot achieve the performance targets when the same metrics are applied to various items without considering the characteristics of the applied items. Therefore, in order to improve availability, PBL coverage should be extended to a system level that includes key components that have a large impact on availability. If multiple items are included in the PBL coverage, the metrics should be applied differently, taking into account the characteristics of each item.

  • In wireless sensor networks, one of the most important goals of designing protocols is to extend the network lifetime. A node has lots of duplication in sensing and communication range with surrounding nodes after many of nodes are randomly scattered. Such a heavy duplication overhead affects on the network lifetime seriously so usually all nodes need not activated constantly to carry out sensing and communication operation. One of the optimal methods of prolonging the network lifetime is finding the number of surrounding nodes necessary to maintain the network coverage and connectivity. It has been studied till the current date in wireless networks. If the neighbor necessary can be acquired to satisfy the probability using the ideal number of neighbors necessary and the acquired number of neighbors m to guarantee network coverage and connectivity. We use the result that F. Xue et al and S. Song et al derive previously in finding the neighbor necessary to guarantee the network connectivity and cany out the computer simulation to verify the necessary number. We present that our scheme satisfy the network coverage and connectivity. We present the simulation results compared with constant probability scheme through computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we present a distributed fault-tolerant topology control protocol that configure a wireless sensor network to achieve k-connectivity and (k+1)-coverage. One fundamental issue in sensor networks is to maintain both sensing coverage and network connectivity in order to support different applications and environments, while some least active nodes are on duty. Topology control algorithms have been proposed to maintain network connectivity while improving energy efficiency and increasing network capacity. However, by reducing the number of links in the network, topology control algorithms actually decrease the degree of routing redundancy. Although the protocols for resolving such a problem while maintaining sensing coverage were proposed, they requires accurate location information to check the coverage, and most of active sensors in the constructed topology maintain 2k-connectivity when they keep k-coverage. We propose the fault-tolerant topology control protocol that is based on the theorem that k-connectivity implies (k+1)-coverage when the sensing range is at two times the transmission range. The proposed distributed algorithm does not need accurate location information, the complexity is O(1). We demonstrate the capability of the proposed protocol to provide guaranteed connectivity and coverage, through both geometric analysis and extensive simulation.

  • The eLoran system is considered the best alternative because the vulnerability of satellite navigation systems cannot be resolved as perfect. Thus, South Korea is in the process of establishing a testbed of the eLoran system in the West Sea. To provide resilient navigation services to all waters, additional eLoran transmitters are required. However, it is difficult to establish eLoran transmitters because of various practical reasons. Instead, the positioning with NDGNSS/AIS source can expand the coverage and its algorithm with applying continuous waves is under development. Using the already operating NDGNSS reference station and the AIS base station, it is possible to operate the navigation system with higher accuracy than before. Thus, it is crucial to predict the performance when each system is integrated. In this paper, we have developed a simulation tool that can predict the performance of terrestrial integrated navigation system using the eLoran system, maritime NDGNSS station and the AIS station. The esitmated phase error of the received signal is calculated with the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound factoring the transmission power and the atmospheric noise according to the transmission frequency distributed by the ITU. Additionally, the simulation results are more accurate by estimating the annual mean atmospheric noise of the 300 kHz signal through the DGPS signal information collected from the maritime NDGNSS station. This approach can further increase the reliability of simulation results.

  • In this paper, properties of exact confidence interval and some approximate confidence intervals of hyper-geometric parameter, that is the probability of success p in the population is discussed. Usually, binomial distribution is a well known discrete distribution with abundant usage. Hypergeometric distribution frequently replaces a binomial distribution when it is desirable to make allowance for the finiteness of the population size. For example, an application of the hypergeometric distribution arises in describing a probability model for the number of children attacked by an infectious disease, when a fixed number of them are exposed to it. Exact confidence interval estimation of hypergeometric parameter is reviewed. We consider the approximation of hypergeometirc distribution to the binomial and normal distribution respectively. Approximate confidence intervals based on these approximation are also adequately discussed. The performance of exact confidence interval estimates and approximate confidence intervals of hypergeometric parameter is compared in terms of actual coverage probability by small sample Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Korea Railroad Research Institute has developed the driverless rubber-tired K-AGT (Korean-Automated Guideway Transit) system from 1999 to 2005 and has done its performance and reliability tests on the test line at Gyeongsan-city. Radio Frequency Communication-Based Train Control system of K-AGT, which employed Advanced Automated Train Control scheme, detects train position using the radio propagation delay between wayside and vehicle radio equipment. In this paper, we investigate whether the transmission power of radio system can be reduced to the permitted level announced by the Ministry of Information and Communication for license-free ISM(Industrial Scientific Medical) frequency bands. We first determine radio propagation model, using the measured data at test line, and perform simulation for radio coverage prediction. From the simulation results, we identify that the radio system operated with reduced power can provide good link quality in total test line.
