  • A common form of construction for apartment buildings consists of walls and coupling element. But, the structural behavior of coupling element are very complex and affected by the properties of coupling element. The propose of this paper is to evaluation the behavior of coupling element in wall-dominant system. An 1/2 scale three specimens was constructed and under cyclic loads. The specimen was consisted of opening walls and coupling element as well as floor slabs. From the result of this study, in coupling slabs, the stresses were not uniform across the width. And the effective width of coupling slabs was found smaller than the that of predicted from previous studies.

  • In this work, the iterative coupling of finite element and boundary element methods for the investigation of coupled fluid-fluid, solid-solid and fluid-solid wave propagation models is reviewed. In order to perform the coupling of the two numerical methods, a successive renewal of the variables on the common interface between the two sub-domains is performed through an iterative procedure until convergence is achieved. In the case of local nonlinearities within the finite element sub-domain, it is straightforward to perform the iterative coupling together with the iterations needed to solve the nonlinear system. In particular, a more efficient and stable performance of the coupling procedure is achieved by a special formulation that allows to use different time steps in each sub-domain. Optimized relaxation parameters are also considered in the analyses, in order to speed up and/or to ensure the convergence of the iterative process.

  • The present paper presents multiscale modelling via coupling of the discrete and finite element methods. Theoretical formulation of the discrete element method using spherical or cylindrical particles has been briefly reviewed. Basic equations of the finite element method using the explicit time integration have been given. The micr-macro transition for the discrete element method has been discussed. Theoretical formulations for macroscopic stress and strain tensors have been given. Determination of macroscopic constitutive properties using dimensionless micro-macro relationships has been proposed. The formulation of the multiscale DEM/FEM model employing the DEM and FEM in different subdomains of the same body has been presented. The coupling allows the use of partially overlapping DEM and FEM subdomains. The overlap zone in the two coupling algorithms is introduced in order to provide a smooth transition from one discretization method to the other. Coupling between the DEM and FEM subdomains is provided by additional kinematic constraints imposed by means of either the Lagrange multipliers or penalty function method. The coupled DEM/FEM formulation has been implemented in the authors' own numerical program. Good performance of the numerical algorithms has been demonstrated in a number of examples.

  • In most framed structures the nonlinearities and the damages are localized, extending over a limited length of the structural member. In order to capture the details of the local damage, the segments of a member that have entered the nonlinear range may need to be analyzed using the three-dimensional element (3D) model whereas the rest of the member can be analyzed using the simpler one-dimensional (1D) element model with fewer degrees of freedom. An Element-Coupling model was proposed to couple the small scale solid 3D elements with the large scale 1D beam elements. The mixed dimensional coupling is performed imposing the kinematic coupling hypothesis of the 1D model on the interfaces of the 3D model. The analysis results are compared with test results of a reinforced concrete pipe column and a structure consisting of reinforced concrete columns and a steel space truss subjected to static and dynamic loading. This structure is a reduced scale model of a direct air-cooled condenser support platform built in a thermal power plant. The reduction scale for the column as well as for the structure was 1:8. The same structures are also analyzed using 3D solid elements for the entire structure to demonstrate the validity of the Element-Coupling model. A comparison of the accuracy and the computational effort indicates that by the proposed Element-Coupling method the accuracy is almost the same but the computational effort is significantly reduced.

  • The bearing coupling section of machine tools is the most important factor to determine their static/dynamic stiffness. To ensure the proper performance of machine tools, the static/dynamic stiffness of the rotating system has to be predicted on the design stage. Various parameters of the bearing coupling section, such as the spring element, node number and preload influence the characteristics of rotating systems. This study focuses on the prediction of the static and dynamic stiffness of the rotating system with the bearing coupling section using the finite element (FE) model. MATRIX 27 in ANSYS has been adopted to describe the bearing coupling section of machine tools because the MATRIX 27 can describe the bearing coupling section close to the real object and is applicable to various machine tools. The FE model of the bearing couple section which has the sixteen node using MATRIX 27 was constructed. Comparisons between finite element method (FEM) predictions and experimental results were performed in terms of the static and dynamic stiffness.

  • A new coupling method of Element-Free Galerkin Method(EFGM) and Boundary Element Method(BEM) using the domain decomposition method is presented in this paper. This proposed methodology is that the problem domain is decomposed into sub-domains being modeled by the EFGM and BEM respectively and the respective EFGM and BEM domains share a partially overlapped region over an entire domain. Then, the each sub-domain is separately computed and the variables on common region are iteratively updated until converging. It is an important note that in the developed coupling method, there is no need to combine the coefficient matrices of EFGM and BEM sub-domains, in contrast with the other conventional coupling methods. In the first part of this paper, a theory of EFGM and BEM is summarized, and then a brief introduction of domain decomposition method is described. Then, a new coupling method is presented. Also, patch test and Some numerical examples are studied to verify stability, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method, in which numerical performance of the method is compared with that of conventional method such as EFGM-BEM variational coupling method, EFGM and BEM.

  • The iterative decomposition coupling formulation of the precise integration finite element method (FEM) and the time domain boundary element method (TD-BEM) is presented for elstodynamic problems. In the formulation, the FEM node and the BEM node are not required to be coincident on the common interface between FEM and BEM sub-domains, therefore, the FEM and BEM are independently discretized. The force and displacement converting matrices are used to transfer data between FEM and BEM nodes on the common interface between the FEM and BEM sub-domains, to renew the nodal variables in the process of the iterations for the un-coincident FEM node and BEM node. The iterative coupling formulation for elastodynamics in current paper is of high modeling accuracy, due to the semi-analytical solution incorporated in the precise integration finite element method. The decomposition coupling formulation for elastodynamics is verified by examples of a cantilever bar under a Heaviside-type force and a harmonic load.

  • This paper deals with a comparative study on coupling of Element-free Galerkin(EFG) method and Infinite Element(IE) by IE's shape function. In this study, mapped infinite elements(mapped IE) and decay function infinite elements(decay IE) are coupled with the EFG method. A coupling procedure of EFG-Mapped IE is much easier to be integrated than a coupled EFG-Decay IE. A coupled EFG-IE method used well-defined functions to preserve the continuity and linear consistency on the interface of the EFG region and IE region. Several benchmark problems are solved to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the coupling algorithms by IE's shape function. The numerical results show that the developed algorithms work well for the elastic problems with infinite boundaries.

  • This study is concerned with the analysis of two-dimensional steady magnetic fields by the coupling of FEM and BEM. FEM(Finite Element Method)is most widely used as a method of numerical analysis and BEM (Boundary Element Method)is a newest method for it. And the results from this coupling method are compared and discussed with those of FEM only. Consequently, it is shown that to obtain the same accuracy of results the coupling method requires less calculating time and dimension than the FEM.
