  • This paper presents a new structure for a step up dc-dc converter, which has several advantageous features. Firstly, the input dc source and the clamped capacitor are connected in series to transfer energy to the load through dual voltage multiplier cells. Therefore, the proposed converter can produce a very high voltage and a high conversion efficiency. Secondly, a double voltage clamped circuit is introduced to the primary side of the coupled inductor. The energy of the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor is recycled and the inrush current problem of the clamped circuits can be shared equally by two synchronous clamped capacitors. Therefore, the voltage spike of the switch tube is solved and the current stress of the diode is reduced. Thirdly, dual voltage multiplier cells can absorb the leakage inductance energy of the secondary side of the coupled inductor to obtain a higher efficiency. Fourthly, the active switch turns on at almost zero current and the reverse-recovery problem of the diodes is alleviated due to the leakage inductance, which further improves the conversion efficiency. The operating principles and a steady-state analysis of the continuous, discontinuous and boundary conduction modes are discussed in detail. Finally, the validity of this topology is confirmed by experimental results.

  • A high-step-up DC/DC converter for renewable energy systems is proposed. The proposed structure provides high voltage gain by using a coupled inductor without the need for high duty cycles and high turn ratios. The voltage gain is increased through capacitor-charging techniques. In the proposed converter, the energy of the leakage inductors of the coupled inductor is reused. This feature reduces the stress on the switch. Therefore, a switch with low ON-state resistance can be used in the proposed converter to reduce losses and increase efficiency. The main switch is placed in series with the source. Therefore, the converter can control the energy flow from the source to the load. The operating principle is discussed in detail, and a steady state analysis of the proposed converter is conducted. The performance of the proposed converter is verified by experimental results.

  • In this paper, based on the first-order shear deformation plate theory, buckling analysis of piezoelectric coupled transversely isotropic rectangular plates is investigated. By assuming the transverse distribution of electric potential to be a combination of a parabolic and a linear function of thickness coordinate, the equilibrium equations for buckling analysis of plate with surface bonded piezoelectric layers are established. The Maxwell's equation and all boundary conditions including the conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate for closed and open circuited are satisfied. The analytical solution is obtained for Levy type of boundary conditions. The accurate buckling load of laminated plate is presented for both open and closed circuit conditions. From the numerical results it is found that, the critical buckling load for open circuit is more than that of closed circuit in all boundary and loading conditions. Furthermore, the critical buckling loads and the buckling mode number increase by increasing the thickness of piezoelectric layers for both open and closed circuit conditions.

  • In light of the growing traffic congestion problem and congestion cost, the container transport by railway has to be increased. The freight transport by railway can have decided advantages over trucks in terms of energy efficiency, emissions and cost for certain freight movements, just as transportation in the metropolitan region can have great advantages over driving truck. But the freight transport by truck should gain significant mobility benefits from a freight railway system. Thus, the DMT(Dual Mode Trailer) transport system which is coupled railway transport advantages with load transport advantages has been developed and used in the european countries. The DMT transport will therefore serve the areas required by transport organizers. The purpose of this paper is to estimate economical feasibility analysis for development of DMT transport system. Consequently, this study analyzed the characteristics of the DMT system. The horizontal load.unload system is being considered as an adoptable DMT system in consideration of the situation in Korea.

  • Reinforced concrete can be considered as a heterogeneous material consisting of coarse aggregate, mortar mix and reinforcing bars. This paper presents a two-dimensional mesoscopic analysis of reinforced concrete beams using a simple two-phase mesoscopic model for concrete. The two phases of concrete, coarse aggregate and mortar mix are bonded together with reinforcement bars so that inter force transfer will occur through the material surfaces. Monte Carlo's method is used to generate the random aggregate structure using the constitutive model at mesoscale. The generated models have meshed such that there is no material discontinuity within the elements. The proposed model simulates the load-deflection behavior, crack pattern and ultimate load of reinforced concrete beams reasonably well.

  • In this study, a structural and fatigue strength evaluation of the Fairlead Chain Stopper (FCS) was performed as a part of the development of a disconnectable mooring system to be applied to 10MW floating offshore wind power generation systems. To estimate the load acting on the FCS, a 10 MW semi-submersible floater was designed using the 10 MW wind turbine developed by Technical University of Denmark(DTU). The minimum breaking load (MBL) of the grade R5 and 147mm mooring chain was applied for the FCS strength analysis. The fatigue load was obtained from the coupled analysis results conducted by a collaborating research institute. The structural and fatigue safety of FCS were evaluated in accordance with DNV codes. From the evaluation results, it was confirmed that the FCS satisfies the structural and fatigue safety requirements.

  • In this study, the compact type solar thermal and ground coupled heat pump hybrid system for space heating/cooling and hot water supply has been developed. This hybrid system was installed in Zero Energy Solar House(ZeSH) in KIER for the demonstration. The thermal performance and operational characteristics of this hybrid system were analysed especially. The results are as follows. (1) This hybrid system was designed in order to address the existing disadvantages of solar thermal/ground coupled heat pump system. For this design, all parts except solar collector and ground coupled heat pump were integrated into a single product in a factory. The compact type unit includes two buffer tanks, an expansion tank, pumps, valves, a controller, etc. This system has an advantage of easy installation with simple plumbing work even in narrow space. (2) The thermal charging and discharging time of the buffer tanks and its characteristics by ground coupled heat pump, and heat pump COP according to geo-source temperature and buffer storage temperature have been studied. This system was found to meet well to the heat load without any other auxiliary heating equipment. (3) The operating hours of the ground coupled heat pump as a backup device of solar thermal can be reduced significantly by using solar heat. It was also found that the minimum heating water supply setting temperature and maximum cooling water supply setting temperature make an influence on the heat pump COP. The lower heating water and the higher cooling water temperature, the higher COP. In this respect, the hybrid system's performance can be improved in ZeSH than conventional house.

  • Systematic research has been conducted by KAERI to develop a supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle energy conversion system coupled with a sodium cooled fast reactor. For the development of the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle ECS, KAERI researched four major fields, separately. For the system development, computer codes were developed to design and analyze the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle ECS coupled with the KALIMER-600. Computer codes were developed to design and analyze the performance of the major components such as the turbomachinery and the high compactness PCHE heat exchanger. Three dimensional flow analysis was conducted to evaluate their performance. A new configuration for a PCHE heat exchanger was developed by using flow analysis, which showed a very small pressure loss compared with a previous PCHE while maintaining its heat transfer rate. Transient characteristics for the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle coupled with KALIMER-600 were also analyzed using the developed computer codes. A Na-$CO_2$ pressure boundary failure accident was analyzed with a computer code that included a developed model for the Na-$CO_2$ chemical reaction phenomena. The MMS-LMR code was developed to analyze the system transient and control logic. On the basis of the code, the system behavior was analyzed when a turbine load was changed. This paper contains the current research overview of the supercritical $CO_2$ Brayton cycle coupled to the KALIMER-600 as an alternative energy conversion system.

  • This paper presents the application of the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) numerical technique to simulate the driving of open-ended piles into sandy soil. The main objective of this study was to investigate the applicability of CEL technique to the behavior of the driven pile penetration. Comprehensive studies to verify the behavior of driven pile penetration are presented in this paper. Through comparison with results of field load tests, the CEL methodology was found to be in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurement, and the CEL approach accurately simulated the behavior of driven pipe piles.

  • According to deformation features of pre-twisted bar, its elastic bending and torsion buckling equation is developed in the paper. The equation indicates that the bending buckling deformations in two main bending directions are coupled with each other, bending and twist buckling deformations are coupled with each other as well. However, for pre-twisted bar with dual-axis symmetry cross-section, bending buckling deformations are independent to the twist buckling deformation. The research indicates that the elastic torsion buckling load is not related to the pre-twisted angle, and equals to the torsion buckling load of the straight bar. Finite element analysis to pre-twisted bar with different pre-twisted angle is performed, the prediction shows that the assumption of a plane elastic bending buckling deformation curve proposed in previous literature (Shadnam and Abbasnia 2002) may not be accurate, and the curve deviates more from a plane with increasing of the pre-twisting angle. Finally, the parameters analysis is carried out to obtain the relationships between elastic bending buckling critical capacity, the effect of different pre-twisted angles and bending rigidity ratios are studied. The numerical results show that the existence of the pre-twisted angle leads to "resistance" effect of the stronger axis on buckling deformation, and enhances the elastic bending buckling critical capacity. It is noted that the "resistance" is getting stronger and the elastic buckling capacity is higher as the cross section bending rigidity ratio increases.
