  • The increasing needs for higher cargo capacity in the container vessels' fleet has led to ship builder's demand for higher power output rating engine to meet the propulsion requirement, thus, leading to the development of super large two stroke low speed diesel engines. This large sized bore engines with more than 12 cylinders are capable of delivering power output up to more than 100,000 bhp at maximum continuous rating. The thrust variation force due to axial vibration occurring in propulsion shafting of these ships are transmitted to ship structure via thrust bearing. This force may vibrate the super structure of ship in the fore-aft direction and the fatigue strength of crank shaft can be decreased by additional bending stress increase in crank shaft pin and journal. In this paper, the axial vibration of propulsion shafting system on the 14RT-flex96C super large diesel engine with 14 cylinders is identified by theoretical analysis and vibration measurement.

  • This study shows the vibration characteristics of an actuator with six wire-suspensions, used in optical pickups of optical disc drives (ODDs). In this paper, the vibration characteristics of this beam structure is induced mathematically. To obtain vibration modes of focusing direction, the vibration analysis is achieved in lateral and longitudinal directions of the structure. The accuracy of induced vibration characteristics is proved by comparing mode frequencies with a finite element analysis. Finally, it is shown that mode shapes can be modified by changing design parameters in mathematical expressions.

  • This paper analyzes the vibration characteristics of an optical pickup actuator, which has six wire-suspensions and is used in optical disc drives(ODDs). The vibration characteristics of the actuator is mathematically described by analyzing its beam configuration and motion condition confined to lateral and longitudinal directions of the beams. The accuracy of the vibration characteristics is proved by comparing mode frequencies with a finite element analysis. Finally, it is shown that mode frequencies and shapes can be modified by changing design parameters in mathematical expressions.

  • The free vibration of stiffened and damaged coupled shear walls is investigated using the mixed finite element method. The anisotropic damage model is adopted to describe the damage extent of the reinforced concrete shear wall element. The internal energy of a locally damaged shear wall element is derived. Polynomial shape functions established by Kwan are used to present the component of displacements vector on each point within the wall element. The principle of virtual work is employed to deduce the stiffness matrix of a damaged shear wall element. The stiffened system is reinforced by an additional stiffening beam at some level of the structure. This induces additional axial forces, and thus reduces the bending moments in the walls and the lateral deflection, and increases the natural frequencies. The effects of the damage extent and the stiffening beam on the free vibration characteristics of the structure are studied. The optimal location of the stiffening beam for increasing as far as possible the first natural frequency of vibration is presented.

  • In this paper, the axial-bending coupled equations of motion for an elastic layered beam are derived. From this equation of motion, the spectral element is formulated for the vibration analysis by use of the spectral element method (SEM). The modal analysis methodology for the present coupled field equations of motion is then developed. As an illustrative example, a cantilevered beam is considered. The correctness of the equations of motion developed herein is verified by gradually reducing the thickness of upper elastic layer to converge to the single layered elastic beam solutions. Also, the accuracy of spectral element is confirmed by comparing its results with the result by modal analysis.

  • The vibration of the hard disk drive (HDD) systems, which comprises flexible disks, flexible shafts, bearings, and base structures, are analyzed by a finite element method (FEM) to cope with complicated coupling effects between them. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the uncoupled, axial and bending coupled vibrations are calculated. Modal testing of the HDD systems is performed to validate the finite element analysis (FEA) results. Good agreement was obtained between the computed and experimental results. Sizing design sensitivity analysis (DSA) of the system was performed with the thickness of base structure and bearing stiffness as design variables. The DSA results tell how can I increase or decrease eigenvalue of the system effectively.

  • Free vibrations of steel-concrete composite beams are analyzed by using the dynamic stiffness approach. The coupled equations of motion of the composite beams are derived with help of the Hamilton's principle. The effects of the shear deformation and rotary inertia of the two beams as well as the transverse and axial deformations of the stud connectors are included in the formulation. The dynamic stiffness matrix is developed on the basis of the exact general solutions of the homogeneous governing differential equations of the composite beams. The use of the dynamic stiffness method to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a particular steel-concrete composite beam with various boundary conditions is demonstrated. The accuracy and effectiveness of the present model and formulation are validated by comparison of the present results with the available solutions in literature.

  • This work presents a free vibration analysis of functionally graded metal-ceramic (FG) beams with considering porosities that may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication. For this purpose, a simple displacement field based on higher order shear deformation theory is implemented. The proposed theory is based on the assumption that the transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The most interesting feature of this theory is that it accounts for a quadratic variation of the transverse shear strains across the thickness, and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. In addition, it has strong similarities with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory in some aspects such as equations of motion, boundary conditions, and stress resultant expressions. The rule of mixture is modified to describe and approximate material properties of the FG beams with porosity phases. By employing the Hamilton's principle, governing equations of motion for coupled axial-shear-flexural response are determined. The validity of the present theory is investigated by comparing some of the present results with those of the first-order and the other higher-order theories reported in the literature. Illustrative examples are given also to show the effects of varying gradients, porosity volume fraction, aspect ratios, and thickness to length ratios on the free vibration of the FG beams.

  • Dynamic response of axisymmetric arbitrary laminated composite cylindrical shell of finite length, using three-dimensional elasticity equations are studied. The shell is simply supported at both ends. The highly coupled partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations (ODE) with variable coefficients by means of trigonometric function expansion in axial direction. For cylindrical shell under dynamic load, the resulting differential equations are solved by Galerkin finite element method, In this solution, the continuity conditions between any two layer is satisfied. It is found that the difference between elasticity solution (ES) and higher order shear deformation theory (HSD) become higher for a symmetric laminations than their unsymmetric counterpart. That is due to the effect of bending-streching coupling. It is also found that due to the discontinuity of inplane stresses at the interface of the laminate, the slope of transverse normal and shear stresses aren't continuous across the interface. For free vibration analysis, through dividing each layer into thin laminas, the variable coefficients in ODE become constants and the resulting equations can be solved exactly. It is shown that the natural frequency of symmetric angle-ply are generally higher than their antisymmetric counterpart. Also the results are in good agreement with similar results found in literatures.
