Burst capacity of pipe under corrosion defects and repaired with thermosetting liner

  • This paper aims at providing insights on the use of thermosetting liner for the repair of offshore pipelines exposed to corrosion and leakage. The work which covers both experimental and numerical approaches were aspired due to the high cost of repair for pipelines, limitations of thermoplastic material and limited study of reinforced thermosetting liner. The experiment involves a destruction test called the burst test, carried out on an API 5L X42 carbon steel pipe under four case studies, namely (i) intact pipe, (ii) pipe with corrosion defect, (iii) pipe with corrosion defect and repaired with thermosetting liner and (iv) pipe with leakage and repaired with thermosetting liner. The numerical simulation was developed to first validate the experimental results and later to optimize the design of the thermosetting liner in terms of the number of layers required to restore the original strength of the pipe. The burst test shows an improvement in 23% of the burst capacity for the pipe with corrosion defects, after being repaired with a three-layer thermosetting liner. The parametric studies conducted showed that with an addition of thermosetting layers, the burst capacity improves by an average of 1.85 MPa. In conclusions, the improvement in strength can be further increased with increasing thickness of the thermosetting liner. The thermosetting liner was also determined to fail first inside the host pipe.

  • This has been possible by integration techniques such as very large scale integration (VLSI) and wafer scale integration (WSI). Redundancy has been extensively used for manufacturing memory chips and to provide repair of these devices in the presence of faulty cells. If there are too many defects, the momory has to be rejected. But if there are a few defects, it will be more efficient and cost reducing for the company to use it by repairing. Therefore, laser-repair process is nedded for such a reason and redundancy analysis is needed to establish correct target of laser-repair process. The proposed CRA (Correlation Repair Algorithm) simulation, beyond the idea of the conventional redundancy analysis algorithm, aims at reducing the time spent in the process and strengthening cost competitiveness by performing redundancy analysis after simulating each case of defect.

  • It takes 2 or 3 months to manufacture memory device. Defect has to exist owing to hundreds of processes. If there are too many defects, the memory has to be rejected. But if there are a few defects, it will be more efficient and cost reducing for the company to use it by repairing. Therefore, laser-repair process is needed for such a reason and redundancy analysis is needed to establish correct target of laser-repair process. The equipment development company had provided the redundancy analysis and each development company had developed and provided separately. So, to analyze the similar type of defects, redundancy analysis time can be very different by the manufacture. The purpose of this research is to strengthen the competitive price and to apply correlation concept in business for reducing the redundancy analysis time to repair the defects

Burn-in Considering a Trade-Off of Yield and Reliability (수율과 신뢰도의 상충효과를 고려한 번인)

  • Burn-in is an engineering method for screening out products containing reliability defects which would cause early failures in field operation. Previously, various burn-in models have been proposed mainly focused on the trade-off of shop repair cost and warranty cost ignoring manufacturing yield. From the view point of a manufacturer, however, burn-in decreases warranty cost at the expense of yield reduction. In this paper, we provide a general model quantifying a trade-off between product yield and reliability, in which any defect distribution from previous yield models can be used. A profit function is expressed in burn-in environments for determining an optimal burn-in time. Finally, the method is illustrated with gate oxide failures which is an important reliability concerns for VLSI CMOS circuits.

A Correlation Analysis of Influence Factors of Nonconformity in Construction Projects (건설프로젝트의 품질결함의 발생요인간 상관분석)

  • Construction defects are major components that result in cost overruns and schedule delays in construction projects. There have been extensive research efforts to investigate the cause of defects. However, little effort has been devoted to analyze correlation among various reasons of construction defects while a defect is not usually an outcome of a single cause, but rather occurs when several interrelated causes combine. Based on this recognition, this paper analyzes 831 nonconformity reports collected from 30 construction projects in Korea from 2011 to 2014. The correlation analysis revealed that a significant portion of construction defects occurred in the procurement and construction phase and as the pattern of function defect and installation defect. Triggered by human error, defective material and faulty method, these defects are treated by conccession, repair, rework that can significantly lower the cost and schedule performance. This paper is significant in terms of providing a theoretical basis for analyzing correlation among various reasons of construction defects and quantitative measures for establishing effective defect prevention strategies.

  • Adhesive bonding repair methods has been used for a number of decades for construction of damaged structures. In order to evaluate the life of cracked aging aircraft structures, the repair technique which uses adhesively bonded boron/epoxy composite patches is being widely considered as a cost-effective and reliable method. But, this repair method contains many shortcomings. One of these shortcomings, debonding is major issue. When the adhesive shear stress increases, debonding is caused at the end of patch and plate interface. And this debonding is another defect except cracks propagation. In this paper, we assess safety at the cracked AI-plate repaired by Br/Epoxy composite patch. Firstly, from the view of fracture mechanics, reduction of stress intensity factors is determined by the variety of patch feature. Secondly, using the elastic analysis and finite element analysis, the distribution of adhesive shear stresses is acquired. Finally, The problem of how to optimize the geometric configurations of the patch has been discussed.

CONSTRUCTION DEFECTS AND MONETARY RETENTIONS IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECT: A REVIEW OF CASE LAW

  • Retentions are generally considered to be intended to act as a powerful tool to incentivize contractors/subcontractors to remedy defective work in cases of non-performance. This study attempts to establish the extent to which retentions can be used for this purpose by investigating case law connected with insurance and defective work. One of the significant questions is whether retentions are sufficient to deal with construction defects or value of retentions in the rectification of defects is illusory. The cost to repair a defect may vary depending on a number of components including type, cause, magnitude and the construction stage at which the defect occurs. It is expected that a review of existing cases on defective workmanship will provide an insight on the issues and whether retentions are effective in their intended function. In order to establish their functionality, the study described in this paper investigated 6 construction insurance cases to identify the critical issues and the causes of dispute. It was found that the nature and the cause of defects were different in each case. It was also established that certain defect types not covered by insurance may be covered by retentions - potentially one of the key uses of a retention strategy. It is expected that the findings will assist in forming a view on the quantum of money that may be required paving the way for a first time understanding on a rational basis for setting up retention regime.

  • During the shipbuilding construction, the repair works will be occurred by various reasons such as the natural disaster, mistakes of engineers or workers, defect of material, and so on. The one of the engineer's responsibilities is to design considering every possibility and to prevent the repair works due to the mistakes during construction stages, but actually it is very difficult and impossible to avoid every mistake. However, it is also the responsibility of engineers to find the best solution for the unavoidable mistakes which is to maintain the capacity of vessel and guarantee the safety for the repair works considering the construction schedules and economic cost. In this paper, it will be introduced the brief of repair works to the structural damage of the moon-pool structure in drillship which is built in our shipyard. For the verification of the structural strength, the fatigue analysis has been carried out based on the guide of Classification society. Furthermore, the modifications of structure design and welding procedure have been applied to avoid the stress concentration in the moon-pool structure.

Characteristic Analysis of Utilization of Security Deposit for Repairing Defects Using Statistical Analysis (통계분석을 이용한 공동주택 하자보수보증금 특성 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the actual utilization rate of the deposit for defect repair of apartment complexes and its influential factors. We analyzed the data on enforced defect deposit cases by using one-sample t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and simple linear regression analysis. The difference between the deposit amount specified and the enforcement amount actually disbursed was found to about 0.51%. The change rates for short-term costs amounted approximately to $839KRW/m^2$ and 130,000 KRW/household per year, and those for long-term costs were $647KRW/m^2$ and 123,207 KRW/household per year. The results warrant the need for further research on establishing a deposit amount based on actual statistical data.
