  • The current study aimed to find the effects of hair treatment with shea butter on bleached hair and hair protection. The agent for hair treatment with shea butter was developed in different concentration levels (0%,1%,3%,5%) for experimentation. After applying the agent to bleached hair, hair samples were evaluated as follows. Increase in hair thickness was highest in the hair sample that had 5% of shea butter. The amount of amino acids was also highest in the hair sample that contained 5% of shea butter. Comparing the difference of the surface color, hair sample with 5% of shea butter showed low level of L⁎ while the level of a⁎ value that reflects the redness was high and the level of b⁎ value that reflects yellowness was low. Observation through the scanning microscope confirmed the positive effects by showing smoother surfaces in the sample with shea butter than in the bleached hair. This study showed shea butter is considered to be cosmetics to protect damaged hair by bleaching.

Of them, this research made the illustrations to use cosmetics, color pencils and pastel based on the graphical technique. for each design of the illustrations, ethnic, sexy, natural, romantic and gorgeous images, which were considered to be appropriate to the graphical technique, were chosen by the researcher out of hair and makeup styles that appeared in the fashion magazines including Vogue, Gap, Mode et Mode from 2000 through 2001. In particular, they were chosen with focusing on basic styles. The summaries below were found with the experience of making illustrations. Various techniques and skills are required to express the ideas of hair and makeup styles. Of them, the graphical technique is very useful as the primary step to learn various techniques and improve drawing skills. First, the graphical technique may enable not only expressing what is desired to draw as is, but also accurately representing hair and makeup designs so as to convey objective expression. In this regard, it is a proper way to achieve its inherent purpose as conveyance of messages. Second, more accurate styling of hair and makeup is available through graphical expression, which helps understand related practical techniques. In addition, makeup illustration, which is expressed through direct makeup products and instruments, may serve skill improvement since such direct use provides the feeling of real makeup. Third, the graphical technique as a basic drawing skill may unrestrictedly show the artist's expression ability. Fourth, although artistic merits implying individuality and creativity should be shared through illustrations that express the artist's ideas or emotions, the graphical technique is the easiest method to beginners who just started learning of illustration, in that it enables expression without highly advanced skills.

  • Maple tree is a useful medical plant for obtaining bioactive materials such as pharmaceutics, cosmetics, food additive, etc., and there are 16 species of native maple trees in Korea. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant activity of sap and crude extracts of Acer mono Max, a representative maple species. The crude extracts were obtained by solvent extraction (water, ethanol, and ethyl acetate) from its branches (bark and xylem). The phenolic contents and radical scavenging capacities of the extracts and the sap were evaluated in terms of half maximal effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) and kinetics by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The ethanol extracts showed the highest extraction yield, phenolic contents and antioxidant activity, and bark extracts showed better antioxidant activity than xylem extracts. The antioxidant activity of the sap was very low, but the $EC_{50}$ of ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts ranged from 68 to $79{\mu}g/mL$, similar to that ($60{\mu}g/mL$) of the control, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The DPPH radical scavenging rate ($220{\sim}760{\mu}M/min$) and the second-order reaction rate constant ($6.48{\sim}7.04L/g{\cdot}min$) of these extracts were better than those of BHT ($55{\sim}370{\mu}M/min$ and $3.60L/g{\cdot}min$). These results suggest that A. mono Max. is one of the useful bioresources for obtaining antioxidant biologically active substances, and it is possible to obtain physiologically active substances from by-product of its pruning while minimizing the effect on the growth of the tree.

  • The Spartina anglica is recognized as a highly invasive plant and active eradication methods are required. In this study, we aimed to determine the physiologic activities of Spartina anglica extracts as a cosmetic ingredient. Antioxidant properties were investigated by different chemical methods including radical quenching (DPPH and ABTS), reducing power(FRAP) assay and aerial part of S. anglica(SAA) extract presented the strongest antioxidant activities. The significant cytotoxicity was not observed up to a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL in RAW264.7 cells and NHDF cells. The anti-inflammatory activity of S. anglica belowground(SAB) extract had strong effects on cell-based systems, including LPS-induced NO and cytokines(TNF-a and IL-6) production in RAW264.7 cells. Collagen synthesis and skin hydration gene expression of S. anglica extract showed the highest anti-wrinkle and moisturizing effect in NHDF cells. Results presented in this study tend to show that the ethanol extracts of S. anglica could be exploited as useful-bio-resource for bioactive substances in functional cosmetics.
