  • The microencapsulation of droplets or particles within a solid shell leads to the formation of core-shell particles. Microencapsulation provides protection and controlled release of core materials such as drugs, vitamins, enzymes, perfumes, and the like. Such particles have, therefore, found a diverse range of applications in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, cosmetic, and food industries. UV absorbers are widely used for cosmetics to screen out ultra violet (UV) rays which have side effects on human skin. The absorbers are made generally from synthetic organic compounds, which can stimulate the human skins to develop allergic phenomena.

  • Microbial surfactants are more effective and environmentally friendly than many synthetic surfactants. Sophorolipid, a glycolipid type microbial surfactant, is produced from C. bombiocola. Cultivation techniques to increase the productivity have been developed using various carbon sources and reactor setup, reaching its concentration upto 100-300 g/L. Due to its high productivity and non-toxicity, sophorolipid became one of the most promising alternative to synthetic surfactants. Fermentative production of sophorolipid depends primarily on the carbon sources, such as glucose and vegetable oils, and nitrogen sources. Chemical modification of the sophorolipid produces various derivative with different physical properties including hydrophile-liphophilie balance(HLB), emulsion formation, surface tension and dispersing ability. Commercial potentials of sophorolipid in the cosmetic, health care and environment clean-up industries have been discussed.

  • The synthesis of pure calcium carbonate nanocrystals was achieved using a simultaneous injection method to produce nano particles of uniform size. These were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The nano particles were needle-shaped aragonite polymorphs, approximately 100-200 nm in length. The aragonite polymorph of calcium carbonate was prepared using aqueous solutions of $CaCl_2$ and $Na_2CO_3$, which were injected simultaneously into double distilled water at $50^{\circ}C$ and then allowed to react for 1.5 h. The resulting whisker-type nano aragonite with high aspect ratio (30) is biocompatible and potentially suitable for applications in light weight plastics, as well as in the medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and paint industries.

  • Nanotechnology is now applied to many industries, resulting in wide range of nanomaterial-containing products, such as electronic components, cosmetic, medicines, vehicles, and home appliances. Nanoparticles can be released throughout the life cycle of nanoproducts, including the manufacture, consumer use, and disposal, thereby involving workers, consumers, and the environment in potential exposure. However, there is no current consensus on the best sampling method for characterizing manufactured-nanoparticle exposure. Therefore, this report aims to provide a standard method for assessing nanoparticle exposure, including the identification of nanoparticle emission, the assessment of worker exposure, and the evaluation of exposure mitigation actions in nanomaterial-handling workplaces or research institutes.

  • Dyes are widely used in various industries including textile, cosmetic, paper, plastics, rubber, and coating, and their discharge into waterways causes serious environmental and health problems. Four different carbon nanostructures, graphene oxide, oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes, activated carbon and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, were used as adsorbents for the removal of Nile Blue A (NBA) dye from aqueous solution. The four carbon nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The effects of various parameters were investigated. Kinetic adsorption data were analyzed using the first-order model and the pseudo-second-order model. The regression results showed that the adsorption kinetics were more accurately represented by the pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium data for the aqueous solutions were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, and the equilibrium adsorption of NBA was best described by the Langmuir isotherm model. This is the first research on the removal of dye using four carbon nanostructures adsorbents.

  • Natural colorants are regarded as substitutes for synthetic colorants in the fields of fiber dyeing, hair dyeing, cosmetic, and food industries. The use of natural colorants has been increased in view of global environment and sustainability. However, scientific approach to the production is required because the supply of natural colorants depends on the climate, soil, and cultivation methods. This brief review contains the advances in science and technology related to natural colorants including characterization, analysis, CIEL*a*b* and Munsell color systems, and future prospects. For the characterization and the analysis of natural colorants, chromatography, some spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis, FT-IR, NMR), mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction are generally used.

  • In this study, antioxidative activities and cellular protective effects of 70% ethanol extracts and fractions from lavender were evaluated. The scavenging activity ($FSC_{50}$) of free radical (1,1-phenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) was 46.6, 45.5 and $477.5{\mu}g/mL$ in the 70% ethanol extract, ethyl acetate fraction and aglycone fraction, respectively. The reactive oxygen species scavenging activities (${OSC_{50}$) of 70% ethanol extract, ethyl acetate fraction and aglycone fraction were 8.1, 3.3 and $17.6{\mu}g/mL$, respectively, and they showed lower antioxidative activity than that of using L-ascorbic acid ($1.5{\mu}g/mL$). However, the aglycone fraction showed higher photohemolysis protective effect than that of using the 70% ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction. At $50{\mu}M$ concentration, the cellular protective effect (${\tau}_{50}$) of 70% ethanol extract, ethyl acetate fraction and aglycone fraction from lavender was 70.6, 87.2 and 165.2 min, respectively. In particular, the lavender aglycone fraction showed 3.8 times higher cellular protective effect than that of (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol. The lavender fractional components including luteolin 7-O-glucuronide, vitextin, rosmarinic acid, luteolin, and apigenin were identified using TLC and LC-MS. However, the lavender aglycone fraction did not show any significant increase in flavonoids (luteolin and apigenin) compared to that of the ethyl acetate fraction. In conclusion, it is suggested that lavender may be applied as an antioxidant material in cosmetic industries.

  • Nowadays, ceramides have been found to be an important component in the outermost layer of the skin - the stratum corneum. It is undersrood that ceramides play an important role in structure and maintenance of the interellular lipid lamella structure in the SC layer. Thus, many efforts have been made by the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries to get human skin-identical ceramides or pseudoceramides which show similar performance with natural ceramides. The purpose of our study was to systhesize new pseudoceramides via an effective and economical systhetic pathway and to show their performance of skin restoratio. Four kinds of the new pseudoceramides were synthesized by the reaction of alcoholic amine and alkyl ketene dimer. First of all, PC-4 and PC-5 were synthesized by the reaction of 3-amino-1,2-propanidiol and serinol with alkyl ketene dimer respectively. After that, PC-4R and PC-5R were produced by changign kitone group at $\beta$-position to amide bond of above synthesized PC-4 and PC-5 into hydroxyl group using NaBH4 respectively. Their expected structures were conformed by the NMR, IR spectra, and elemental analysis. A study to show the restoration effectiveness was performed in which human skin was pretreated with high concentration of SDS surfactant solution. Using 0.5% solution of above synthesized pseudoceramides, there was the significantly faster restoration of the damaged than that of placebe itself treatment.

  • This study examines the mud-based cosmetic business by the City of Boryeong, as a case of commodifying a locality's endowment or assets for local development. Concretely, the study discusses current status, history, and challenges of the business, which is an integral component of the key industry Boryeong seeks to promote by using mud materials. The discussion also encompasses the factors behind the development of the business. From the discussion, my work presents the business‘s implications for the commodification of local endowment/assets and promotion of relevant key industries that not a few localities across Korea pursue for their development. I deal with such implications, primarily in terms of the local institutional capacity that induces the consistent participation and cooperation from a wide variety of stake-holder as well as the shared vision among such stake-holders in order to enable a locality to effectively use its endowments/assets for local development. And this work reiterates that the institutional capacity which is significant for local development has to be analyzed in depth and such an analysis should produce codified knowledge which can function as guidances or manuals for many localities.
