  • In this paper, a novel method for designing an M-channel, causal, stable IIR cosine-modulated filter bank (CMFB) with near PR property is proposed. The IIR prototype filter is designed with a simple constraint using lattice stucture with 1st order allpass filter components. The IIR prototype filter which is designed by the proposed method has higher stopband attenuation and sharper roll-off characteristic than the one which is designed by the previously proposed method with similar complexity. The proposed M-channel IIR CMFB which is designed from this IIR prototype filter is applied to subband acoustic echo canceller (AEC). We obtained about 15dB higher ERLE using this subband AEC than when M-channel FIR subband AEC with similar complexity.

  • In this paper, a cosine-modulated filter bank with a modified synthesis part is proposed for arbitrary scaling of images, whereby down/up-sampling kernels based on a compactly supported sampling function (CSSF) are utilized. Also, an optimized adaptive interpolation technique is incorporated into the filter bank structure to compensate for quality degradation arising in scaled images. Finally, simulation results verify that high quality images with arbitrary sizes can be obtained by applying the proposed approach.

  • Multi-carrier CDMA is a transmission scheme where data symbols are spread in the frequency domain with a spread code then transmitted using multiple carriers. It is robust against narrowband interference because of its long symbol duration. However, due to large sidebands of the rectangular window frequency response, subchannels spectrally overlap with neighboring subchannels, which leads to substantial intercarrier interference in a dispersive channel. In this paper, we consider a mult-carrier CDMA system where subchannel spectral containment is achiveved by M-band cosine modulated filter bank (CMFB). In CMFB based MC-CDMA, subchannel spectral containment is achieved using the filter bank of longer impulse response than that of conventional discrete Fourier transform (DFT) filter bank. We show that spectral containment feature of the CMFB based fading channel is analyzed using computer simulations.

  • A wideband active noise cancelling system involves adaptive filters with hundreds of taps. The computational burden required with these long adaptive filters. This paper presents active noise cancelling system using M-channel QMF filter banks in which the adaptive weights are computed in subbands. The analysis and synthesis filter banks use cosine-modulated pseudo QMF filters. The reference signal for on-line identification of error path transfer characteristics is used to difference signal between the output of adaptive filters and the output of lowpass subband filters. The proposed adaptive subband filter bank suggests robust active noise cancelling system retaining the computational complexity and convergence speed advantaged of subband processing.

  • In DWMT, CMFB is employed in the synthesis/analysis part. The CMFB uses filters of greater length than the DFT, resulting in reduced interference between the carriers. In addition, the CMFB system is computationally efficient and fast algorithms are available for their implementation. Traditional designs for the prototype filters of CMFB usually involve nonlinear optimizations. Thus the required design time is considerably large even for small filter orders. In this paper, a prototype filter design method for CMFB is presented using optimal window method. The design process is reduced to the optimization of a single parameter and consequently the required design time is much less than those of the existing methods. It is shown that the stopband performance of the proposed method is better than that of the Kaiser window method.

  • In the view point of further reducing the inter-symbol interferences studied in our previous paper 〔1〕, a quadrature pair of wavelet-based filter banks that are composed of a pair of cosine and sine modulated filter banks is applied to MC-CDMA transmultiplexing. For that fact, the symbol duration gets twice longer than the one in , 〔1〕, the interference effects due to channel overlapping and Doppler spread can be effectively alleviated while increasing the channel utilization efficiency. Moreover, the well-known wavelet properties are exploited to design the prototype filter in such a way to maintain the size of sidelobes much smaller than those of the FFT, the interference reduction effect can be further obtained. To verify the behavior of our proposed quadrature filter bank based MC-CDMA system, the reverse-link bit error rates with respect to SNR under Rayleigh fading and additive white Gaussian noise channel environments are computed. The results show an improved system performance over the conventional MC-CDMA.

  • M channel near-perfect-reconstruction(NPR) pseudo-QMF banks are a hybrid of conventional pseudo-QMF design and spectral factorization approach where the analysis and synthesis filters are cosine-modulated versions of the prototype-lowpass filter(p-LPF). However, p-LPF H(z) does not have linear-phase symmetry as well as magnitude-distortion optimization since it is obtained by spectral factorization of $2M^{-th}$ band filter $G(z)=z^{-(N-1)}H(z^{-1})H(z)$. A fair amount of attention, therefore, has been focused on the design of filter banks for reducing only alias-cancellation distortion without reconstructed-amplitude distortion. In this paper, we propose a new method for designing linear-phase p-LPF in NPR pseudo-QMF banks, which is based on Maxflat(maximally flat) FIR filters with closed-form transfer function. In addition, p-LPF H(z) is optimized in this approach so that the 2M-channel overall distortion response represented with $G(z)=H^2(z)$ approximately becomes an unit magnitude response. Through several examples of NPR pseudo-QMF banks, it is shown that the peek ripple of the overall magnitude distortion is less than $3.5{\times}10^{-4}\;({\simeq}-70dB)$ and analysis/synthesis filters have the sharp monotone-stopband attenuation exceeding 100 dB.
